I'm not sure how "assault rifles" are defined, but making them illegal (full automatic rifles are already illegal, I think.) won't eliminate them. Or come close. I very rarely post but I would like to give my two cents on this topic. Fully automatic guns produced after 1986 are illegal, therefore any full auto guns are tens of thousands of dollars. Full auto guns are not being used in these shootings. Full auto guns are owned in large part by gun dealers and well to do gun enthusiasts.
Most think of AR-15s when they think of assault rifles. AR-15s are semi-auto rifles that are mostly 223/5.56 NATO caliber. When I hear the term high powered assault rifle I find it hard to take the speakers knowledge of guns seriously. The muzzle energy of a 223 is about 1300 ft.lb. The typical 30-30 or 30-06 deer rifles are 2,000 ft.lb. and 3,000 ft.lb. respectively. A lowly 22 is 700 ft.lb. The typical 12 gauge slug is 2,700 ft.lb. All guns have the capacity to kill. The most prolific American sniper in Vietnam used a simple 30-06 for most of his 93 confirmed kills. This is the same gun that thousands of hunters take to the woods with deer hunting every year. To the answer of what about magazine capacity my answer is CA already has a law limiting it to 10 rounds, no different than the capacity of many other “hunting” rifles.

Clearly. That is exactly what happened here. Bout legal assault rifles and modified them to fully automatic. Stricter gun laws could possibly slow down the mas shooting epidemic. But terrorists will always find a way to create catastrophic events.

Well, the 350 million guns - in a country with about 320 million people - is obviously part of the problem.
You can still make it difficult for someone to get one (or a dozen). Yeah, I'm sure there will be someone who shouldn't have a gun that manages to get one, but right now with the current laws, it's not too hard for one to get one through a private sale or gun show.
If I'm not mistaken, you live in Charleston, WV, right? (may be thinking of someone else). If so, you should know all about the issue we have here, with the Detroit scum coming down here - I live by Huntington - in part because they can get guns cheap and easy in West Virginia, and then sell them back in Detroit. Think it would be a bit different if there was less supply and harder to get throughout the whole country?
There is no such thing as an assult weapon. It was a term that was created by the British army after world war I to measure different weapons used to assult a trench.
Souf - just playing devil's advocate, you do realize Ted Kennedy was on that list at one time, right? I think perhaps accessing the terror watch list could be an additional tool, but it should not be used as an absolute. Too many mistakes on the list.

It supports an action plan that requires both sides of these issues to compromise. And just based on the obvious polarity in this thread, I don't see it happening in Washington. It's a shame.

1. When Mass Shooting is taking place the studies have shown one has 6 Minutes to get out and get safe, or you will be killed. SWAT Teams Average Response Times are 2 Hours to decide what to do! Therefore, a new paradigm is coming about that the likelihood of waiting and negotiating is now going to be replaced with immediate entry and just going in to save as many as possible. First Responders are going to take a step up from now on, instead of waiting.
2. After shooting up the workplace, the Suicide Couple after abandoning their own child, was heading towards a school to shoot others people's children and that will be a future event coming soon unfortunately.
3.Converts make up 40% of the Suicide Recruits! They are naive and more easily to make into a Suicide Killer after being taught the new religions with fervent fevers than long time practicing members. Big Stadiums and Schools with Big Attendance are preparing for downsizing, not up-sizing anymore. This trend was happening anyway, as TV takes over, but Isis Attacks will hasten the demise. The Costs and Expenses of Security at Big Stadiums is going up way faster and Big Stadium White Elephants will be developing more with a Terrorists Attack.
7. Women are standing up facing great peril. Many Women Reporters, Writers, and especially Isamlic Women have stood up to Islamic Imans and Clerics that ordered their deaths for speaking out. In my faith, I have found converts and more to the point, recent converts to be far too literal and enthused than suits my tastes.
Over five years ago our county law enforcement determined that they would not wait on active shooting scenarios in our public schools. They do drills every year now and are coordinated that for any of them, as soon as they have enough law enforcement on site they will enter buildings to go after the shooters.
Honestly, we are lucky more sporting events other than the boston marathon have not been hit.
We are divided, and I will just leave it at that because it will get far too contensious to call the mindbending partisan divide in this country.
The perspective in the country is so out of whack, it defies belief.
We have so many bigger issues here at home we dont even have the first capacity to come together and address, but the focus now is on something we really cant "fix."

Not luck at all, I was given a Tour of Heinz Stadium and Fort Pitt Tunnels with a group of selected people by PENNDOT and Stadium Security a few year ago and it was about Security everywhere. One needs special passes just to go to certain araes and limited and other aspects many do not know.
For example, If you ever need Gasoline run out nearby the Fort Pitt Tunnel near the bridge or after near the Tunnel and a Cop Car will be there is less than a minute with Gasoline to get you on your way.
When anyone important comes to Pittsburgh, the Tunnels are fill with Security in ways I cannot disclose, and Video can ID people faces in their cars, and when they can't that license is recorded for follow up!
This has added to the cost of games!

I've tried, and I didn't make much of a difference, and things are somehow worse now than before ... It isn't getting better.
There are no easy answers ever, all I know I attended a seminar I was invited to, and learned new information I did not know, and others may have known it too far sooner, and that is OK too, but I shared what I learned, and no one can remove failure from any process, but that is how to learn too. I respect you took the time to post what you feel and think, and not making a judgment just adding to the discussion.

The San Bernadino terrorists had plenty of pipe bombs with them... they didn't even need to use their guns...
