OT:Buccos

This might have been the most impressive win of the year. 2 of 3 from the Dodgers.....

18-8.

Raise It!!
Every team that the Pirates play are somehow really bad this season, and for that reason people are discrediting this start. Could it be that they’re really bad *because* they’re playing the Bucs?

I’m already looking ahead to the Nats series, but can’t get ahead of myself!

It’s still early to know for sure what the Bucs are but the pitching has been pretty good.

And as others have said that’s where you make the hay. Beating down the lesser teams - if that’s what they are.

That is what’s giving me hope for this team- I thought the hitting was there but the pitching would still be shaky. Was thinking the ceiling for this team was similar to 2018 when they finished just above .500 with the same issues. Now, maybe this is sustainable. They’ve showed a couple times already that they can bail out our bats when they go cold.

When there’s 30+ years of sheer futility mixed with incompetence (with a relatively brief interruption) you can’t be surprised when anyone thinks they may be shaky anywhere. Or expect the bottom to fall out at any moment.

It’s like when Pitt lost to Directional Michigan a cpl yrs ago. I am one of many who was guilty of saying here we go again. You get conditioned.

And even during that brief interruption they crapped the bed in a sense. Didn’t want to trade any prospects who turned out to amount no next to nothing. Getting Byrd turned out to be a good move but that’s all they did. And yea I get it - hindsight - but you have a team like that it’s time to go for it.

I know alot of people dismissed 2013-15 as "lucky" more than design. I always countered that 98 wins is not "lucky". I had historically frustrated arguments with Delpanther on this. But you know what, those three years, while I enjoyed them, I have to admit there was alot of luck involved.

Aside from some top 5 picks, they had no one come up through their system. This time, they are coming up through the system from drafts and a series of shrewed trades. And they are developing guys. And have waves in the minors coming through.

Yea when guys like Burnett and Martin play as well as they did there’s an element of luck. They were good players to be sure at one time but at that point in their careers it was lottery ticket-ish. And both hit.

So far so good. Still way too early to flex, though. 16% of the season wouldn't even be three games in the NFL. But the future looks bright.
You're right. The Buccos record is roughly equivalent to a 2-1 NFL start. The good news is that the NFL teams that start 2-1 make the playoffs more than 50% of the time. For the record, I doubt the Pirates can sustain this. But that won't stop me from enjoying their season. Good things are on the horizon.

Well they have a road trip to Washington and Tampa Bay next. TB with the best record in baseball but I'm sure if Pittsburgh wins 2 or 3 there we will hear an excuse that TB really isn't that good either.

But in the words of Bill Parcells: you are what your record says you are

Volquez and Liriano's resurrections were completely unplanned and definitely lucky. Unfortunately it fooled Pirates Best Management Team in Sports to think they can resurrect any tomato can to competent starter.

BMTIS resurfaces!

Even AJ Burnett and JA Happ were solid salvagings. They were on a roll there for a while. Maybe Quintana got them back on track.

What’s the deal here? Is it going to be color analyst by committee all season?

It kind of has been the last couple of years. It is exacerbated this year because Bob Walk is on the Steve Blass glide into retirement plan, so he isn't doing all the games anymore. I think they are giving these other guys a chance to prove themselves. Hopefully one will prove good enough to replace Walk when he completely retires (Walker) and another will prove to be better than John Wehner and they can end that awful experiment as well (anyone with a pulse who can string together coherent sentences).

I forget, is it Capps who was on color the past few days?? He is pretty good. No Tim McCarver but much better than Wehner.

Are you sure that's not the contract he signed when we brought him up, of which he'll receive a pro-rated portion?

I have a very difficult time believing we would pay somebody 720k for play for the Altoona Curve at 34 years old.
IMO. Regardless . He’s earned every penny .

Yeah, $720,000 is the major league minimum. He makes a pro-rated portion of that for every day he is on the roster. So as of now he's been on the roster for four games, 4/162 = 0.0247, which means that if he gets sent back to the minors tonight he would have gotten paid a total of $17,777.78, give or take, for his time with the Pirates.

There is no one at AA (who isn't there through special circumstances like an injury rehab stint) that gets paid anywhere close to $720,000 per year. Unless you count in a pro-rated portion of their signing bonus.

In other news, the 2023 Pirates’ biggest weakness appears to be loaded bases. If we lose the first game of this doubleheader, that will be why.

Alright, we'll try this again. Bases loaded with zero outs in the top of the 8th. Let's add some insurance runs here...

Edit: walked in one run and sac flied another one. 6-3... I'll take it.

Broadcast said their odds to make the playoffs have increased from like 6% at the start of the season to around 25% now!
