OT:Buccos

Wow, just saw that the Pirates have a 3-game series coming up in Tampa this Tuesday-Thursday. Current. MLB 1 vs 2. If the Dodgers series win didn’t sway any of the doubters, I guess we’ll find out more against the Rays.

Other than just W/L record, current MLB rankings:

Batting Avg Rays 1, Pirates 4
OB % Rays 1, Pirates 3
Runs Rays 1, Pirates 4
Slugging % Rays 1, Pirates 2
ERA Rays 1, Pirates 5

I could go on but it’s more of the same. Rays 1st in just about every category. Pirates up there in the top 5 in all but a few. Who would have remotely guessed that about the Pirates 30 games into the season.

I haven’t headed back up North from Sarasota for the summer yet. Have to get up to Tampa to catch one of these Rays-Pirates games.

They also play the O’s after that. We’re going to find out real soon how good this team is!

Since we’re still talking about announcers, I just found out yesterday that Lanny is still calling games for WVU baseball on ESPN+. I’d take him in a heartbeat compared to Block, and there’s nooooo doubt it. :)

He actually still calls high school games for the Trib's on line high school coverage. I think he just loves broadcasting games and can't give it up.

He’s still doing that as well? I remember hearing him call a football game at Heinz Field one time and he was a natural at it. Perhaps he just didn’t want the travel that came with being an MLB announcer anymore.

It feels weird to not be on the receiving ends of these breakdowns. Again, this is a different team folks. No letdown (and no mercy!) in the second game of the double-header.
How perfect was it to see that crushing win, knowing the Pirates have been on the wrong end of these over the past years and on the mound for the opposition was Chad Kuhl? Bringing it full circle.

With him being faculty at Waynesburg, I’m wondering if he’s living down around Greene County or close to Morgantown these days.

They kept making me want to feel bad for him when they’d show his wife, but I’ll just root for going forward. ;)

Oviedo who looked like a great young arm threw nothing but breaking balls today and the Nationals pounded him. What gives? He wouldn't throw a fast ball and he is supposed to be a power pitcher??? Perhaps we will hear about arm troubles for him soon. He just didn't look at all like he did his previous starts.

Easy explanation, I picked him up on my fantasy BB team.

He wasn't getting it over in the spots he wanted. Happens sometimes.
Nats spanking the PIrates today.
Karma.

Buccos have returned to standard form tonight. Watching pop Flys drop in front of them and can't get a hit with men on base. I guess it was just a matter of time until the buccos would be the real buccos.

It’s 1 game in a 162 game season.

I've said and it's obvious pitching will determine this team ..
Playing in an indoor stadium has advantages and disadvantages for both teams .
It's 1 game people . They aren't looking great , but not horrible ...
Let's Go Bucs !!

Pirates not playing up to standards tonight.
Needed a play on a soft grounder to SS, but Castro booted it and Rays took advantage to score 3.
Shelton got tossed.
These umps seem to have a hard on for Pirates.
Missed balk last night and now this.
The Rays pitcher is a tough assignment.
Cutch turned on one but other guys look overmatched.
DEFINITELY need a better option at catcher, these guys are automatic outs in key situations.

Now full blown clown ball has broken out.
Shame because Keller should be winning 1-0.
RF dogging on a lazy fly ball then Bae makes crazy play, but follows up with a E on an easy out at home, and compounds it by throwing it into RF!

Who is doing color?

Their Rule 5 pitcher, Hernandez gave up a tape measure shot, his first HR given up, but showed great poise and came back to strike out 2 with no further damage.
He had another guy struck out, but home plate ump squeezed him.
Giving that edge pitch to Rays pitcher all night, but not the rookie.

This kid looks like a keeper. Hard throwing lefty with other nice pitches.

And called him for a balk but yet the pirates didn’t get the call last night. This crew has been atrocious.

This umpiring crew seems to have a big chip on their shoulder.
Some horrible calls, then copping an attitude when questioned.
The thing with the crew chief doing the eye hand, I'm looking at you, thing was really bush league.

They act like people pay to go watch them!

The Pirates have run into a big time buzz saw in Tampa.
That team is for real.
Big time pitching staff and pen, plus ML hitters from 1-9 in the lineup.
Play good defense too.
Will be shocked if that isn't you AL WS representative.

4 straight losses with a tough Toronto team coming in.
Definitely coming back to earth. Now Velasquez is hurt too.
Too many holes in the lineup. Can't get the big hits when they need them, and on this trip, the defense was faulty in key spots.
They're still a .500 team at best this year.
Probably sellers at the deadline. Won't be bad because they have guys who aren't going to help them next year and beyond. Might as well get value for them.
Umpiring was against them all series. Just like football.....damn refs!!

I mean. Getting swept is kinda deflating but it's also to the Rays who are absolutely smoking everyone.

Yeah. I think I posted earlier in this thread it's going to depend highly on how the pitching holds up (obviously) . One down in the rotation ....
Next up Toronto .. Oh Boy ...

The umpiring was atrocious but so was the Pirates defense and hitting with men on base. As for today's "Pirate strike zone" - you think the umpires didn't see Sheltie's hot mic clip from last night? Some of the strike calls were laughable.

The bright side is the Pirates are still in 1st. The Brewers losing to Colorado is way worse.
