Ot. College academics are just as dirty as college athletics

And then deducting the bribe from taxes. Should that be described as a crime?

Yea, no. I mean everyone would understand what the intent was but as long as you dont say anything specific, it's not really a crime.

I don’t know how many have been arrested overall. Out here, both actresses have been arrested. One spent the night in jail. Of course, the Beverly Hills jail has single rooms, color TV and menus from 20 restaurants that deliver. They charge money to stay there. (True.) Two USC coaches and an administrator have been fired. I think the tax fraud is the big jail issue for most. Taking a phony tax deduction could land jail time.

Of course, it’s just the tip of the iceberg and it doesn’t get the super rich, just the rich. The super rich just make big donations and, lo and behold, their kids are admitted. Kushner’s father gave Harvard a $20 Million contribution to get Jared and his brother in. The contribution was legal and tax deductible. The admissions? Perfectly normal for two kids with unimpressive academic resumes and mediocre board scores to get into Harvard.

It’s a RICO investigation

In general no academics aren’t “just as dirty” that’s not what you should be taking from it.

It’s money and power breeding corruption

RICO will eventually take down trump too

Just wait

I was thinking the same thing. Whatever happened to just making a large donation with an eyewink?

Define "large"

A couple mill wont do it, particularly when the schools in question have the largest endowments .

Felicity Huffman, as famous and wealthy as she may be, simply doesnt move the needle.

We're talking 50 mill plus, build a research bldg and yea, your underachieving, slapdick child gets in.

Swarmy but perfectly legal. It's been going on for.....forever. I think some of these parents (especially the one who paid $6MM) got some bad legal advice, including a LAWYER out of NYC. Yikes.

What a non story

Of course rich people get their kids in school.

Jared kucher rejected by Harvard
His dad donates $2.5 mil (who didn’t go to Harvard)
Jared gets in.

Jared’s dad goes to jail .

It’s not a non-story. This was a novel and totally illegal way of getting kids into colleges: Changing their answers on the SAT; having someone else take the test for them ( it has always happened but this was highly organized); getting non-athletes into selective colleges by having coaches falsely identify them as athletes (who are admitted under less stringent requirements). This was a major operation. The guy who ran it was raking in over $1 Million a year.

And to what end? It is not as if these kids, coming from wealthy families, are going to need some prestigious degree in order to make a living.

This was all about the parents not being able to accept their children did not belong in not only an academically challenging university, but perhaps college in general.

It wouldnt take anywhere near $50 million, come on. For example, Aunt Becky's kids could have gotten in to USC for a $100K donation, maybe less. Kushner only paid $2.5 million to get his son into Harvard.

Getting great grades when a student didn't earn them goes back to when I went to college in the 70's.
Some of the girls I knew ( I liked them a little on the trashy side) would dress up, go to see their professor for an extra credit meeting in his office and all of a sudden their grade goes from a D to an A.
The oldest profession in the world worked wonders for grades at that time and I guess now
too??
I'm sure rich parents would pay schools with donations in return for good grades for their worthless children. Or even pay professors directly.

My first roommate in a frat when I was a Sophmore was the son of a NY mob figure. He missed class a lot, rarely stayed in the frat house, had a safe house, body guard, and I didn't see him at a lot of classes but he got great grades? Maybe he earned them maybe he didn't. The parents had a lot of money.
He's now an attorney in NYCity.

He had to pass the Bar, so my guess is that he had some smarts.

Crimes don't require spoken words. It'd be a crime, but tough to prove. If my average student kid gets into Yale because I dropped $100K on them....with no prior connection.....and then deducted the bribe......I'm probably facing an audit with the Intimidating Revenue Service. And now, these ivory tower elitists will be facing scrutiny about that practice. i hope people involved lose their jobs, get fined and/or do time.If Pitt did that as a common practice....I'd be done.
And to what end? It is not as if these kids, coming from wealthy families, are going to need some prestigious degree in order to make a living.
Parents living through their kids' lives. This is pretty much the pinnacle of that sickness. Of course, it's so thrilling to talk about your kid at Berkeley over mimosas at Sunday brunch. Never did much for me.

not sure if you realize your conflating stories here but you are

For one it’s not a non story

For two they are now looking into Kushner for this as well as a multitude of other things

For three Kushners dad went to prison but it wasn’t because he donated to Harvard... that part isn’t related

he was convicted of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion, and witness tampering. He served 14 months in federal prison....
