OT: Georgia Tech

I'm guessing he didn't mean it to come across that way, but wow.
Can you imagine here if a Pitt coach did that?

just a poorly thought out tweet. Yeah, I'm sure Meyer & company at the PG would have been all over it if Pitt did something like that, but if Terry smith it would have been nothing to see here, move on...

I would fire him immediately. That is a completely unacceptable tweet, period!

Let him sue!

Were I Jeff Collins, upon reading that tweet, I would immediately walk into his office and say, “That’s it, you’re done. Pack up your shit and go home.”

That’s not just insensitive, it’s downright insane. It is so incredibly reckless and stupid that it cannot possibly be isolated.

If the family of the young man who died sues Georgia Tech claiming that they were negligent in their son’s death, what are the percentage chances they are going to use that tweet as an example of how their child was mistreated?

I’d put that somewhere between 100% and 110%.

Forget about football for a while.
I believe this tells you where the college game is today and IMO it's not in a good place when coaches are doing business the same day or so when a player passes away,

You can't control peoples feelings about a situation until they make the mistake and tell the world.

Most coaches aren't this ignorant to actually post something like this, on that day, but I bet many are thinking along the same lines. I believe the "football business" overwhelms" a lot of coaches and they lose they sense of good judgement.

Timing and judgement mean a lot in life.
Think before you communicate.
If you can't say something nice please don't say anything!
I agree get rid of the guy because it's only a matter of time before he shoots the other foot off!!

Football isn't alone, I'll tell you that. Plenty of times in my corporate experience, the demise of an employee was met with a manager calling a team meeting immediately tallying up the work that needs distributed out to the survivors, as well as the plotting for the replacement.

This tweet or posting or whatever was certainly insensitive, for PR purposes the school should leak out that it has disciplined the guy for it in some way to try to show contrition. Or if the guy stinks as a coach they can use as a convenient reason to dump him with cause. But, if he's the dude who landed the 4 star, lemme tell ya, I don't see him being booted.

And that's almost certainly the sentiment most Tech fans (all 50 of em) have, for sure. "He landed a 4 star guy to our crappy program? Write him a phony apology to read at a Friday PM presser and move on!"

But it is absolutely realistic regarding the true importance bosses everywhere, ... football, accounting, manufacturing, IT, government ... hold for their employees.

I didn't want to get into work stuff, but you're right and that's a bit different from a college kid on a football team.

In business nothing stops, work needs to get done, and a replacement must be found. In most places after a week or so most people don't even remember the person is gone.

You can't say we missed Q3 projections because Ralph got his tie stuck in the paper shredder and well you know? Get Ralph's bad tie out of the shredder and lets get some work done. Everyone is replaceable in a minute or so.

We had a guy as part of a team who had a massive heart attack in France, in fact they couldn't move him back home for a month.
We were in the middle of an ERP conversion in France where hours and days on the schedule were critical so it had to be done exactly on schedule.
He went to the hospital, they flew a replacement to France the next day and the team did what it had to do. We finished up, pack up and moved to Germany to do the same thing and this guy was still in the hospital in France. They flew his family over for a while but they had work and school and couldn't stay long. Glad I wasn't him!

It SHOULD be different for college football, but in this way, like so many other ways, it's a big, ugly business like most others. Just adds to the farcical aspect of it...

life is for the living. with that said, someone dies, you don't forget about them a week later.. a company, business, no matter what the size, shouldn't be dependent on one person. if it is, well that company will fail regardless. it's not callous to expect a company to not go under because one person sees the spirit horse..

Like the posts below and above... he was thinking precisely how they really want a manager aka coach to thinki...but just not saying it aloud
GT wants a coach to be dismissive and disrespectful on social media to a student athlete who just died? that's what they want? Why would they want this?

Hm. I thought you were one of the more realistic posters. You really think these guys have heartfelt concern for these transients that move in and out of programs? Just as the coaches themselves do?

So they definitely want him constantly thinking about the "balance sheet" of players coming and going, how losing one and gaining another impacts things. The POST ITSELF, well, that is a definite moronic move however. They definitely didn't want him doing THAT. Not because it isn't brutally true. Because it IS. He's admitting exactly the reality of above, college sports is as bad, if not worse than all big enterprises, and college sports needs to keep up the charade more than most, as part of its business model (fool the yokels that this is about providing educations and personal experiences).

The post certainly is a problem and they'll work up some retraction or apology, no doubt.

you thought I was one of the more realistic posters? YOu offended me right there. after that, I stopped reading..

Just kidding, kind of. I just think it's in horrendously bad taste to reference a death of a student with a commitment of a recruit in the same tweet. Im all for backfilling a roster vacancy no matter how it become open, life goes on but dear Lord, make a second tweet at least..

The stupidity definitely made me shake my head, in this PC savvy age. It isn't refreshing in the least. But it was totally honest. It exposed the cutthroat mentality of biz. It's also why the Patterson thread going on here elsewhere, the "tsk tsk" by a coach on the increased player transfers and eligibility, is so laughable.

Social media is a great way to figure out who's not fit to lead. Why do you think so many employers use it when interviewing for job openings?

The fact that football position coaches have access to accounts that any and everyone have access to, will only increase the number of WTF moments like this.

I hope we kick their asses (again)

I actually plan on going since ATL is only an hour away

But I agree this guy should be fired

Who in their right mind would trust this coach with their son? Can you imagine him telling you that he would treat your son as though he was his own. Yeah....right.

Maybe I’m the one who doesn’t get this?

I don’t think acting humanely ON THE VERY DAY one of your kids dies tragically makes you politically correct. I just think it makes you a decent human being. Truly, that’s a very low bar to cross.

I think acting callously in the immediate aftermath of a sudden and tragic loss of a young life, makes you an asshole and if I were recruiting against you you had better believe I would use that against you every chance I could. I would say to mom and dad, “This could just as easily be your son. Look how much they value their own kids. Why on earth would you ever trust your boy’s life with these idiots?”

I don’t care if they would consider that negative recruiting, I would consider that telling the truth and I would beat the hell out of you with that moronic tweet.

I can’t believe this guy hasn’t been fired yet.

Oh wait, he’s a good recruiter.... never mind.
This guy must make some $erious eye contact because I would imagine other schools are going to use this a-holes comments against him. Which they should.

Wow - referring to young men in a manner no better than “meat on the hoof”.

Anyone know the cause of death? One can’t help wondering whether GT puts their new players thru the same intensive physical screening that Pitt does. (I’m still proud of Pitt in how they caught the coronary problems of those new players several years ago.)

Many years ago ( mid 90's) when I was coaching youth football ( 10-12's) something like that two of our players had a collision and were on the ground for a while with paramedics attending to them.

I was standing near the players and the HC from the other team came over to me and said "get your pieces off the field." Pieces ? All I remember is getting in his face as two of our coaches pulled me away. I still remember that moment 24 yrs or so later.

It starts very early with some of these guys!

James Franklin makes a lot of similar comments, cleans up on recruiting.

Top players and their stage parents aren't put off by arrogance. They seem drawn to it.

That's seriously too bad, but based on recruiting rankings and successes, it regularly shows that the biggest aholes trounce the nice, clean programs. It's that way in business too. Blame these guys for sure but also blame society and human nature. The best at sports and business are almost always the type As. They identify with each other, so they stick together.

The best mix of course are the rare breeds who seem to be Type A in competitiveness but are able to remain decent people. A Fitz for example. But those seem tremendously rare. For every Fitz there's an AB, Michael irvin, Ochocinco, Beckham, Moss, and dozens of other trash humans but exemplary WR. And you can list similar for every position, most sports (not so much hockey, perhaps...or they're just more anonymous).

And that goes for coaches, obviously. Especially coaches.

I don't know what can be done about it, honestly. I feel kinda dirty at times rooting for bad people wearing "my" teams unis. Over the years, like Barry Bonds, Greg Lloyd, Harrison, etc. But I get over it quickly if the team wins.

A player DIED! Football coaches preach family and togetherness all the time. In other words, a family member died. We are not talking about a coach bragging about dominating the state. There is NO excuse for what this GT coach tweeted. NONE!

Hey, they made the guy apologize, though it was more one of those "sorry YOU were offended by my crass words" kind of insincere half-apologies so common today. Not seeing much more about it, really. It was a head shaker no doubt, but Franklin engineering rapes at Vanderbilt and then threatening the victim to be quiet ... or Meyer gleefully covering up the repeated domestic abuse by his assistant ... rank a lot worse as something to hold against an a-hole coach. Just IMO...
