The Pens have acquired Martin Hanzal and Anthony DuClair from Arizona for Nick Bonino and a first-round draft pick

The price the Kings paid for Bishop was really low. If that's any indication of what the Pens would get for Fleury, hold on to him for the rest of the year, please.
That is the market right now. Why would you trade Pittsburgh anything of consequence for Fleury when you know you can get him for basically nothing after the season?

The Maatta and Daly injuries are a blessing in disguise. Rutherford now has a ton of cap space to make traded. I expect him to get at least 1 of the 2 big fish in Duchene or Shatenkirk.

How do you figure? They aren't out for the whole year. They are both expected back in plenty of time for the postseason. Neither of those deals are going to happen. IMO.

Maatta is being placed on LTIR
Daly is out 6 weeks. We're 7 weeks from ending the season....it would be dumb to bring him back for 1 week.

Just head this morning on the fan that the Pens will have everyone back for the playoffs (maatta, dailey, rust, and sheary all currently on IR) Letang is the only one not on injured reserve. He is day to day. I think you are confused on how Injured reserve works.

" A player who has an injury that renders him physically unable to play for a minimum of seven days after that date of the injury can be placed on the Club's Injured Reserve List. Once a player is placed on the list, the Club may replace said player on its NHL roster with another player."

being placed on IR by no means keeps a player out all year.

He's talking about LTIR which means if the player is put on it he doesn't count against the salary cap. For financial flexibility.

There are two injury lists. If you are not put on the Long Term Injury List your salary still counts against the cap. Once the playoffs start, the cap no longer exists. For the Penguins to make a trade now, the money going out has to equal the money coming in, unless Maata or Daley is put on the LTIL which hasn't happened yet. If they are, and the Pens increase their payroll, they will have to stay on it the rest of the regular season.

I listened to Metzer's interview on the fan this afternoon and he said he was relieved to just find out that the Pens are expecting both D-men back for the postseason, dailey a little sooner than maatta. According to everything I've read dailey and maatta are both on IR not LTIR.

Right, as of now. If they were to make a move that would take them over the cap, they could revisit. 10 games and 24 days is the LTIR minimum.

Gottcha.

Either way I hope they add another affordable stay at home guy to be their #8 and fill in now til these guys are back. Hainsey was an excellent get to be our #7 come playoff time.

I think Hainsey's postseason playing status is still TBD and depends entirely on how well he plays down the stretch here.

If I had to guess, I think he is a good bet to make the starting lineup in Pittsburgh's first playoff game - likely at Maatta's expense.

Fleury has 2 more years on his deal @ a cap friendly number, Bishop is a free agent. Big difference.

That's definitely all true but it doesn't really matter. There's just not a lot of leverage here for Pittsburgh.

The only teams that would be interested in him are teams who feel like they are a goaltender away from a deep playoff run AND who have the cap space to take on that contract and make a balanced deal with Pittsburgh – which is also up against the cap.

Who do you see out there that fits that bill?

Pittsburgh does have more leverage than Tampa had for the reasons you stated but they still don't have a hell of a lot of leverage.

A Fleury trade is simply not going to happen until June.

I don't think a Fleury trade will happen ever. They'll buy out his contract and part of his salary will hit the future caps for a few years.

Yeah I keep looking to other teams on a Capfriendly website and with the "loser point" that keeps so many teams in it.... the real trade partner list for playoff teams to deal with is relatively small.

In the Metro: Carolina and Jersey are out. Philly is too, only they don't know it and it is not in their DNA to admit it and try and build for the future which is why their cupless run is over 42 years and counting.

In the Atlantic: Detroit is out. Tampa realizes they are out and a well run team. Buffalo is in a weird spot that they are out and most likely will not make the playoffs, but they have been so bad for so long they may feel obligated to resist dumping someone and try and make the playoffs.

Also rounding out the East, some recent surges by Boston, Florida and the Islanders have joined them with Toronto and Ottawa for the remainder of the East playoff spots. It is a shame and a travesty that all of the Atlantic division teams will have home ice over the 4th place Metro finisher, who likely will finish with 10-14 more points. Also, the Atlantic is in play, any one of those teams can catch Montreal.

In the West, you have even a bigger mess.

Only Colorado and Arizona are really out. Dallas and Vancouver are also likely out. The rest of the Western teams are all very much in a playoff race.

So....again, there is a limited market right now.

Yeah, that is definitely a distinct possibility as well.

I can see either a buyout or maybe a trade where they retain a bit of salary ala what Toronto is doing for Kessel. Fleury's Cap hit is what, $5.5 million? The Pens retaining $1.5 million makes Fleury a $4million a year goalie for 2 years still in his prime, which I would think makes him attractive.

Because if the Pens let him go he becomes a free agent which means you won't be the only team trying to sign him.

Just wondering. Is the final 2 years of his contract guaranteed? If not they can just cut him loose and only be on the hook for the prorated portion of his original contract bonus. Only a portion of his 5.5 mil cap hit is actually salary.

NHL contracts are guarenteed. It is not like the NFL. The NFL has absolutely the worst union leadership. Anyways...

You know which team makes the most sense for a trade partner for the Pens and Fleury? The Flyers.

I tend to agree. Although teams know we want to ship him, that shouldnt make us need to deal him cheaply. He is a major asset to whatever team wants to trade for him, and he has a very good playoff record to boot.

That being said, not many teams that want him for a playoff run can deal a key contributor back to us. Even if we move him for a first rounder and another piece, I would be happy. I agree he has to move, although, having 2 great goaltenders is nice so far this year.

Thanks. Wasn't sure about that. More and more NFL contracts have guaranteed money, mostly in the form of signing bonuses. All of Antonio Brown's yearly salaries won't be guaranteed but he will probably get a 30 million dollar bonus up front to sign and that is money that can't be taken away.
