Ot: penguins

That was weird. Going into the game I was worried we were going to bookend the Ducks streak (they last won beating us in Pittsburgh) and jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 3 quick strike goals.

Then it was all Penguins. Not even close. When the Pens tied it up, hell when it was 3-2 I felt confident in the win.

I have to admit, I was lukewarm on the Pens trades, but even though Sprong scored, man Pearson and Petterson look pretty damn good and are nice fits. I still don't think Sprong got a proper chance (he is playing #1 line in Anaheim) but oh well.

Pearson is the more complete player. He wins battles for the pucks and defends. Sprong is a poor mans Phil Kessel He has a nice shot but doesn’t come close to having Kessels speed. He was a bad fit fie the pens

Oh I know Pearson is more of a complete player. I was just worried he was not going to be able to finish enough.

One point I would like to add is that Kris Letang must have been in pain and not at all healthy last year. He has been so steady and has been so much better at making decisions on when to go and when to stay home. His outlet passes have been sharp and crisp. I wasn't sure we would get the old Letang back after last season. He has been having a truly remarkable year.

I was impressed with the number of Pens fans at the game. Pretty loud when the Pens scored,,,,,,,,,not sure if you could hear it on the tube. Very nice rink.........

They showed a crowd shot after either the fifth or sixth goal and I thought that at least in the section they were showing that there were almost as many Pens fans standing and cheering as there were Ducks fans sitting and grumbling.

Heard something a few days ago at work from a season ticket holder who has some reliable sources with thr Pens. I figured rumors this juicy normally come out by now, but for some reason it hasn't (unless I missed it). Apparently Murray has/had a drinking problem. It all started back when his father was sick and just spiraled out of control for him after his father passed away. The Pens stepped in and forced him to get some help and he's on the road to recovery. If you remember not too long ago, he was put on thr DL with really no injury designation and no signs of when something happened etc.

Hope it's not true, but the person I heard it from is prett high up in my company and knows people at the arena. He knows I love hockey as much as he does and gives me nuggets every now and then.

Are there mentions of this on other Pens boards? I really don't frequent them much.

The first year we had season tickets in the late 80s we paid the equivalent of $6 per ticket to sit in the balcony.

My how times have changed.
I had season tickets when I graduated college the first few years. That was the primo glory years....and when prices really rose. Had great seats, B21, something like that. Sat next to then State Senator Mike Fisher. I got to see the Pens morph from contender, that first playoff appearance in 1989 to the Stanley Cup years which were just glorious.

Back in the day, I had a lot of insider knowledge. I miss that. I knew of the Coffey trade before it was announced. I had some media connections, then had a buddy intern and work for the Pens, and I played on a team in an adult hockey league with a lot of Penguin Marketing guys. I miss those days. Everyone was always calling me for scoops. Even then, one of the Penguins ended up living next to one of my buddies, and since we were all about the same age, he would hang out with us sometimes (he was a pretty damn big name) and we would take him to dive bars so hopefully he would not be recognized.

Those days are long gone.

I haven’t heard either way but if my father died in my early twenties it definitely could have driven me to drink. It’s possible but I don’t know how credible.

Wish the playoffs started tomorrow as the Pens are red hot. Finished last night on a 7-1 run. Watching the highlights, it was so great to see the Pen fans take over the building in the 3rd period.

They have an interesting schedule. 5 game west coast swing with lots of days off between some games, then they got their week off, then the All Star break.

So this could work out well. Really they are going to get a prolonged break, moreso than other teams so it really can help recharge them. Of course the down side, if you are hot and playing well, you don't want to break.

Good story. I had a partial season ticket plan that year, and of course had the Nordiques game. Seeing Coffee get 4 assists in his 1st game is a career highlight of my Pens fandom.

Remember how exciting it was....I mean people got to their seats early.....just to hear the late great John Barbaro (Pens PA announcer) say the following....."for the Penguins, add to your lineup, #77 Paul Coffey!" The place went crazy. You knew we arrived right then, right there as a hockey franchise.

I got in an early for the pregame skate, and nachos w extra peppers. Nervous excitment all night long. Remeber how crazy those 77 long bomb beakout passes were 1st night? Took him a whole period to take enough off them that mear mortals could make the catch - and then boom! Goal after goal.

He was so fun to watch. Remember the sign hanging in the Arena then?? When Pierre Creamer was the coach? (What a horrible choice he was). "We Got the Coffey. We got the Cream. Now we need A Cup?"

That was terribad for sure - he was such a poor hire. Creamer is currently the only "one year wonder" coach in NHL history to have a winning record...

Remember the game against the Caps when he didn't realize the Pens had to win to stay in the playoff race. But the players did....especially this guy who did this....

For you youngsters........Paul Coffey. He used to score 30 goals and 100 points for the Pens.....as a defensemen.

Letang was supposed to be the next Coffey and I always wonder if guys younger than me think “who’s Paul Coffey?” I’m 35 so while I remember 90-93 I was too young to appreciate it at the time. That said, it makes me relish the 2016-2017 SCF seasons that much more.

I pretty much saw every game of Paul Coffey for the Pens but somehow I forgot he DID put up over a 100 twice with the Pens , let alone with the Oilers.
Simply incredible how he skated.

Another bad stick penalty by Geno ....... of course, Pens get short handed goal by Guentzel (2 on 1 with Guentzel and Crosby)..... 1-0 Pens !

I’m sure it’ll be on social media after the game. I’ll assume he’s not wearing his Pens jersey? :)
Kings gear with a Pens hat.

He did a little show in the crowd before the game with a couple Princess Leia dancers behind him.

Two straight rough outings for MM and the Pens

Seems like the loss of Horny and Zach AR has impacted their level of play

I didn’t watch last night but LA was the second of a back to back. More importantly, Hornqvist has had two concussions already this year. Hopefully he’s able to recover long term.

They will be ok. I think they lost 3 times in the last month with 2 of them being the last two games. It happens, this is a tough road trip. Hopefully they can salvage some points in Arizona and Vegas on the last two games of the trip.

But yeah, they need to get healthy. Hornquivst is a huge part of this team not only with his play but with his leadership and the energy he brings. ZAR was also coming into his own and has played some good hockey so yea they miss both of them for sure.

Right now, and frankly most of the season, Malkin has flat out sucked. He is costing us at least a goal every game we play. Seems like he should be a minus 30 player, but, I am not quite sure what the real number is.

After the goal last night where he fell on his ass in the corner allowing his man to come to the front uncovered and score, the camera went to Sullivan and Recchi. You could tell they were unhappy and probably discussing what just happened. If he doesn't wake up soon, he might be gone come the deadline. I don't ever remember him playing so undiscipplined. He is a human stick violation this year, as well as turnover machine, and always seems to be caught on the wrong side of the puck.

Full disclosure- he has been my favorite player since we got him, but, he doesn't even play like the same guy that made him my favorite.
