Ot: penguins

Where are all the guys that blasted the Jack Johnson aquisition? Turns out, they are getting exactly what they hoped out of him. Solid defense with some good physicality thrown in. I don't know if it will last the life of his contract, but, right now Rutherford and the team have to be pretty happy with him.

Pens 4 Jets 0 ...... a few comments .....

- I thought that was one of the best all around games the Pens played all season.

- Great overall defensive play by the Pens ...... helps prevent goals and helps the transition game to get scoring opportunities.

- Good breakouts ...... supported the puck and got it out with short, quick passes many times.

- Nice "secondary" scoring ...... goals from Maatta, Cullen, Simon, and also the open netter by Letang.

- Agree with "88Pitt88", Jack Johnson is playing well especially since he was paired with Marcus Pettersson ...... those two have been a nice third pairing.

- Murray with another excellent game ..... 33 saves on 33 shots ..... not as many tough saves as some games but he was sharp ...... early, I thought he was playing a little deep in his crease but less so later ..... I hope he stays out aggressively on his angles as he has mostly done since his return from injury ..... if he gets too deep too often, the goals will start to go in ...... for now, he is playing GREAT !

- Team is really coming together ..... next game against Chicago on Sunday.

Pens 2 Blackhawks 1, end of the 1st period ......

Pens scored two early goals to take a 2-0 lead and were playing well although the Blackhawks were coming on some later in the period ...... late in the period, Malkin took a stupid penalty and Chicago scored a PP goal to cut it to 2-1 ....... afterwards the Pens had a 5 on 3 advantage for 1:11 but couldn't score ..... period ended 2-1 Pens.

Wow. Failure to clear the puck MaTTa stinks. Could cost the pens the game. Pens had a chance to put the game away and couldn’t do it

When Shultz gets back I expect to see Matta moved

I thought Maata played fine tonight, but him not being able to clear the puck set up that 4th Chicago goal.

Regardless, I thought him and Johnson were playing well during the streak.
Coming up empty with the two man advantage at the end of the first, and giving the Hawks too many power plays sunk the streak.

The Pens seem to sputter at the end when down a goal. They have a really hard time when they pull the goalie. Can't seem to get the puck into the opponent's end, and then can't muster any pressure.

But they haven't been in that position much the past month, so I suppose it isn't a big deal. Something they need to work on.

Not going to get into too much details. I mean, the Hawks suck until they see the Penguin uniforms then turn into the 1985 Oilers. I wanted that win cause I hate Toews and Kane, and hate all the Hawks crap and hate the fact that they are tanking. Just the Pens looked like they were skating in quicksand, bounces not going there way, the Hawks worked their asses off, while the Pens less so. Even Sid wasn't so good. It happens in an 82 game season.

That 2 man PP was the changer, could have really put them down, instead we effed around for the prettiest goal.

You aren't the only one.
The team just ran off 8 in a row, and are in good shape for the playoffs.
Why does there need to be a scapegoat?
On any given night, anyone can play poorly. Look at Malkin. He's just now starting to make plays and not give them up.
If anyone seems out of gas and done, it's Cullen. I don't think that one is working out.

Even Brassard is contributing more, giving them 3 solid lines.
Justin Schultz skating again. Should be back next month, can't hurt.

Yeah Cullen doesn't need to be an every game player. Play him in spots, but you know and I know, and especially in hockey, when you are in a win streak, coaches tend to be reluctant to make changes to lineups.

What makes any loss seem so daunting is the top 4 teams (including the Pens) just keep winning. The Metro looked like weakest of the 4 divisions, but now with the Pens push, the Caps, the Blue Jackets and the Islanders are 9-1 in their last 10, it looks again to be a tough division.

To me, as we have seen, finishing 1st or 2nd in this division doesn't matter. Home ice against the Caps (for either team) is not critical. I do think it is critical to get home ice against Columbus or New York.

If we could have been disciplined enough to avoid dumb stick fouls the streak would still be alive. We lost this game on special teams, period. They scored on all their power plays, even tho they were only statistically given credit for 1, but two came seconds after the PP expired. Meanwhile, we did a good job of killing our own man advantages for Chicago, by passing it around and waiting for the perfect play that never came. You have to score on a two-man advantage that lasts over a minute.

1 game is not a big deal, but, I would like to see them stop with the stick fouls. It starts with Geno, but, others were guilty last night as well. Anyway, chalk it up to bad night to a team that seems to have our number. They need to keep playing well, to stay with these teams in our division that are surging as well.

I sound like a broken record but it is January 7th. I wouldn't doubt that the tribute last night for the 2009 cup team reminded them that they're not winning any trophies right now. 8 in a row is great but right now it is just something to smile at. If they're only playing strong for a period come April and May then there's cause for concern.

Matt Murray in goal for the Pens tonight as expected against the Florida Panthers ....... I'll be at the game.
Hold up a GO PITT sign so we can find you in the seats??
Tell Malkin to get his Russian butt in gear or he won't be getting any American money from the PENS in the future.

"it's five o'clock somewhere:
Signed: Mr Buffett
Go PITT & CSU Rams!

Oy vey....the Pens were not good tonight. But Matt Murray was really, really, really good tonight.

His save percentage is up to 0.918. Cripes, he raised it almost 50 points since his return.

Yeah the Pens were sloppy tonight, gave some pucks away and saw Florida control the puck more, get more shots on goal, and more overall shot attempts then the Pens ...... two short-handed goals by the Pens, a disallowed goal scored by the Panthers because of an offside challenge by the Pens, and the TERRIFIC play of Murray in goal helped secure the win .....

Hornqvist and Aston-Reese both got hurt ..... not sure of the extent of the injuries ......

Pens now go on a 5 game road stretch ....

Road trip is good timing. Pens were really starting to get sloppy and usually a road trip is when they tighten things up.

I watched that fight with interest.

That'll learn-um never, never, never, hit someone when they turn their head, in the head, it almost always results in broken bones.

If you're a right handed person a well placed left forearm to the face forces the head up, and go to town on the face.

Hockey players should take a hand to hand combat 101 training course or they should stop fighting to avoid injuring themselves.

One of the worst things you can do when it comes to self defense is hurt yourself??

More than "a number 1 goalie". He is playing like an elite, 2 time Stanley Cup winning goalie.

Yup..........too lazy to look but his recent stretch may be the best hes played in his entire career. A performance like this in the Playoffs would help this team go a loooong way

It will be interesting to see if the defense can insulate him again like in 2016. Shultz, Letang, Dumolin and Maatta should all be up to task. Not sure how the new guys will do.

I was just saying, for some reason Murray never got his due by a large portion of Pittsburgh sports fans. He is a talent. Last year he was an average at best goalie. This year he started out and you wondered if those first couple of runs was it.

But now, granted he has to prove he can stay healthy, but when he is healthy and on, he is one of the best goalies in the world.

Yeah I think his health is the biggest factor. I also dont think he was 100% earlier this year. Last year was one of those years where the he had the passing of his dad and he also had some lingering health issues.

As you said, when he is healthy, Im not sure there is anyone better than him, including flower.

I think the passing of his father is hugely understated. 24 is entirely too young to lose a parent. I know it happens but I’m sure it took a much bigger toll than he let on.

Last year he was below average.
First half of this season he was bad.

He is playing like the second cup season currently when he won the job from fleury

Sustaining that high level of play for a long season and staying healthy are the question marks.

The only disconnect are folks who want to gloss over his play when it’s not good.

In Pens related news the Blue Jackets suspended Bobrovsky for a game. The just called it an “incident.” He’s an FA and it doesn’t seem like Columbus has any interest in re-signing him. I wouldn’t either he’s a playoff choker.

Pens vs Ducks tonight ......

Murray vs Gibson in goal ......

Casey DeSmith signed to a 3 year contract extension today worth an average of 1.25 million per year ...... not sure what this means for Tristan Jarry.

You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if they dangled DeSmith at the trade deadline. That’s a pretty damned cap/team friendly signing.

Isn't there an expansion draft this year? Wouldn't DeSmith signing allow them to protect Murray?
