OT: Pens

Ballsy effort by the Pens. Refusing to get pushed around they kept answering the Isles punch for punch and goal for goal. Appropriate that Tanev gets the winning marker after spending every shift hitting every Fishstick he could.

Just a reminder that ESPN and their crack crew will be broadcasting the NHL next season...

YES! YES! YES! YES!! Finally, the Isles for the first time in the past few years against the Pens now have some pressure on them.

I love all of the Pens answers, physically and putting the puck in the net in response. The Pens have had some pretty gutless playoff performances the past few years. Not now, not this year. They are matching the Isles in intensity.

And my new favorite Pen with the game winner!!!

The best part about the game is that the Isles succeeded in making it a physical and dirty game, yet still lost. The Pen's top line was meh (until Sid saved a goal late) and the Isles still lost. They got exactly what they wanted and couldn't win. That's a heartbreaking loss for them.

Lets bury those cock-a-roaches Saturday.

Had company stop in for the second half of the game, and I'm toasted.

Resilience. Resilient. This team might just have what it takes to seize one last Cup. UNREAL resilience.

Jeff Carter. Turbo. These are the guys we desperately needed to be great. They were great tonight. FANTASTIC work.

Every single time we looked to be down and out - same old story - it's Carter, it's Tanev, it's Carter again. And then throw our dominant L4 on top of it - the BART trio. They absolutely crushed at times tonight. Unreal resilience... Highly resilient... I don't have words... Finally our team cares again!

And Zucker! My God - he's been building towards that goal for weeks it seems. Can he get hot? Could it possibly happen? I've seen signs here and there....

Crosby was unable to overcome his linemates, but was 1st star of the last few minutes IMO - he was determined. I never really bought into this Sid-the-super-leader persona once things went sideways under Bylsma. But I'm kind of starting to see it....

That was the gutsiest Pens game since 2017.

Lots of things NOT to like about it, but it doesn't matter right now.

The matchup game was incredible. Sully has to be careful with who he puts behind L2. He did a great job avoiding Barzal, but Trotz went all in mid-game on his L4 against our L2, and they got caved without Dumo-Letang behind them.

That was a TOUGH TOUGH game. Every time they had momentum, we came right back. I can't tell you how big of a team win this is. HUGE win.

Embarrassing display in the 3rd re: discipline and the refs allowing the Isles to turn it into The Circus....

This game was both an incredibly exciting playoff game as well as a total disgrace to the sport IMO. God I hate NHL leadership!

Sullivan has to handle this carefully - they gutted out the win, but they lost their composure, and it almost cost them the game. There has to be accountability.

I need to cool off right now, and my team won the damn game.

good lord.

Good stuff.

Tanev is my new hero.

The Isles are built to beat to the Pens in the playoffs and we're up. Let's keep it going.

Hahaha - we slowly migrated onto our deck during period 2 and turned on the outside TV. Suddenly some neighbors showed up and yeah - drinks on a school night. 😂

That's playoff hockey for you. It turns us all into alcoholic raging lunatics.

I have these games on in my office often as they are at 11 AM here. (Sound down low and the game on in the background-ish while working) I'm the Dept Head, so it is a high traffic area. And I have the mouth of a sailor too. My PA tries to protect me, but at times goals come at inopportune times and my accent sometimes mispronounces "Puck Yeah!". I let one of those rip a few years ago, and the Dean was outside my door. Was able to semi-explain my way through that, but I'm pretty sure he didn't buy any of it.

Your heart is fine. Anyone with a bad ticker would die watching playoff hockey.

Pretty sure my eyeballs were bulging way out of the sockets whilst screaming at the screen. My wife frequently reminds me that they can't hear me. At times I'm not so sure...

Yeah, you have to wonder if Trotz is going to try and turn Game 4 into a complete shitshow like the 3rd period because it sort of worked. It gets the Pens off of rolling lines. Hopefully, with different refs, they will call some of it and the Pens will convert a PP goal or 2 that would stop this nonsense.

Will be interesting also to see who Trotz goes with in Game 4 in goal. All games are important, and a playoff series is a complete series of ebbs and flows, but this next game could be the difference between a long series and a short one.

The Isles are going to throw everything at the Pens to start the next game, desperate to get the 1st goal and lead. If the Pens can survive the onslaught likely in the 1st period next game, they could really start finally causing the Islanders to get tight and make mistakes.

I think most of Pittsburgh remembers where they were that game and when we beat the North Stars 8-0 to win the first cup.
The NHL playoffs are something else.

The fact that the Pens responded to every Islander goal, and they never buckled is huge. Both in confidence for the Pens and maybe start to weigh on the Islanders and their incredible resolve.
It definitely was amazing and HUGE how the Pens responded to the two Islanders tying goals there in the 3rd. I’m glad they did it relatively quickly both times to ease my tension. Because, I’ll admits, I wasn’t feeling very confident for the Pens each time it got tied up. The Isles were really taking it to em.

Q: What sport offers a fan "edge of your seat" excitement every other day for a month?

Jarry gave up 4 goals but despite that, I thought he played a good game .... on the first goal, he was screened by Komarov and Dumoulin, looked around to the right of them, saw the shooter from the point taking the shot and that it was going to come to his left, looked around the left of the screeners but just didn't (or couldn't) adjust in time to the trajectory of the shot which went in over the left shoulder/glove ..... as USN_Panther posted in real time during the game (and I agree) it was a tough save because of the screens and the adjustment they caused for the goalie ....... the 2nd goal was on a pass across the crease and a one timer from the edge of the crease that he had no chance at ..... third goal was a deflection off Ceci's skate that Jarry had no chance ...... fourth goal was the deflection off Clutterbuck that Jarry had no chance ...... the 26 other SOG he saved.

So the only goal against that maybe he had a chance at was the first goal and that was a tough save with the screen.

There was some debate about goalie interference by Clutterbuck on the fourth goal, Sullivan chose not to challenge it fearing that if he lost the challenge, the Islanders would have gotten a PP ...... after reviewing that goal, I think it was a good decision by Sullivan.

The other thing that I really liked about Jarry during the game was his toughness and ability to stay calm ..... he took a LOT of physical contact/punishment during the game and it did not throw him off his game ...... that was a good sign !
