OT: Pens

When this team is healthy, it's pretty hard to match line for line. This is a far cry from the early season team that had Jankowski and Lafferty playing every night. Other than Petterson, and some nights Matheson, there is not a bad player in the rotation now.

The fact that the Pens responded to every Islander goal, and they never buckled is huge. Both in confidence for the Pens and maybe start to weigh on the Islanders and their incredible resolve.

Just want Power Play goal. Maybe it'll slow em' down a bit on the Circus act.

If the Isles do goon it up I think they will bide their time until the 3rd again

They ran jarry one time in the 1st then left him alone until the third

Then they ran him again, kicked him, and speared him, the latter two when he was down on his stomach.

All that after the goal they got by popping off Marino's helmet (are they ever gonna call a penalty on that, it's been what 3-4x in 3 games? C'mon NHL). The second run came after the everybody go in the box special and led to Carter's PP goal thanks!

Never mind all the usual stuff theyve been doing all series

That sh*show was great TV but the refs will be on the lookout to start tomorrow

I bet the Isles will let things build up gradually all game like last night and only kick it up if they're in a spot like they were. It's the NHL, if you simmer things all game so you can engineer a kaboom IF you want, the refs will let it happen

Don't you mean - the refs will encourage it?

I would like to see Rust and Guentzel Show up tomorrow and make Syd's line a threat. With Geno back, we have a strong four lines. It is time the number one line play some good hockey, not just Syd. I hope Jake is ok, the Islanders have been beating the snot out of him. I think he has spent more time down on the ice than he has been upright.

Sidney Crosby. SIDney Crosby. It's SID! SID! SID!! Not Syd!! Sid!! Come on people, he has only been starring in town for 15 years. Erin Donald should have the same issue.

I have a lot of confidence in our Pens outplaying the Isles for at least 2 of 3 periods. Hopefully that and Jarry's performance is enough. I think they win this game. They seem determined to wrap this one up - the only thing that gives me pause is that it is a afternoon game.

On another note it was my first poker game since Covid hit last night. My God - it was good to see folks, nothing like playing cards in the garage with the boys. Normal life....

Rewatched the game this morning - thanks insomnia.

The more I learn about this Jeff Carter fella, the more I'm starting to like him....

BIG props to Geno who played the smartest hockey game of his life. Short shifts and on the right side of the puck all night long. A+ game by G.

This Kris Letang is the Kris Letang his detractors have always wanted. He IS the Penguins blueline.

Sure would love to see Jarred McCann show up for playoff hockey. Maybe someday....

Losing to a team trying to shithouse their way past you would be so incredibly frustrating. How anyone elevates the "face washing after the whistles" facet of hockey to being better than watching people skate fast and do cool things - well it's completely beyond me.

Isles win the garbage after the whistle stuff, Penguins win the game. That's my prediction.

As one get older, things you used to love start to lose their shine a bit. NHL Playoff Hockey is one of the very few things that still gives me the same feeling as when I was 16.

Felt the same way during that game the other night as I did in 1982 when the the Kehoe/Carlyle/Dion Pens came within an inch of cutting that 4yr Islanders Cup run in half.

My first live playoff game was a 2-1 Penguin overtime victory against the Juggernauts from the island to stave off elimination after 8-1 & 7-2 thrashings in NY. Ownership had been so embarrassed they'd actually offered fans a refund. A friend at the Mill gave my Grandpa the tickets in disgust last second.

I've come full circle. Can hear the "Dion" chant from the old Arena as I write.

Highly recommend watching the beginning piece on the Refund.

I remember that. My first playoff game was the infamous 1-0 loss to the Isles in 75. But I was like only 8 so I really couldn't appreciate it much.

Yeah I've heard the story of that game a million times. Interesting thing about this game was I just attended my very first game ever the week before. We played the Islanders in the last game of the regular season, and we beat them up 7-2 in a physical game. Lee got his 30th, Bullard got scored his 50th. It was totally awesome.

So it was quite a shock to watch them go up to New York and get annihilated the very next game. Nobody thought they had a chance in this game after losing the first two by a combined score of 15-3.

That was the first playoff game I'd ever gone to as well. Easter weekend, iirc. We sat in the balcony. I think we paid like $5 for our tickets.

My first playoff game. Pens, I believ Golden Seals. Their goalie Smith took out Michel Briere. The whole arena yelling kill smith, kill smith

Isles owned that period. They know how important this game is.
Pens hung in there, though, kept them off the scoreboard. Big Ben rang one, but still 0-0.
Isles are really good at pushing the action out on the edges.
This looks like a low scoring one.
First goal will be huge as usual.

Still a lot of hockey to play in this game. Two goal leads can disappear quickly.
But the Pens have now officially lost their minds. Tripping call nullifying their power play, and then Letang interfering. Just like that 3-0.
Start packing up the equipment bags...

That's an important goal. You can see the difference in energy. Gives some hope for game 5.

I said in 2014. 2015. 2019. 2020. If your big guns aren't gunning, you are going to lose. You can't rely on bottom 6 players to win a series, nor should you.

Amen. Awful. Just awful. It is Crosby Island out there......he's alone.
The Islanders are making a point of beating up on Guentzel. Haven't noticed Rust, which says a lot. Sid had one good chance right in front. Goalie made a great play coming out and Sid couldn't elevate the puck.

Geno wasn't a factor today. He looks slow, unsure of what he wants to do.

Thought I saw Carter and Sid skating on a line together. That would seem to have potential.

Maybe Sullivan shakes up the lines a bit to wake some people up. Letang wasn't sharp today either.

Best of three now, home ice. The next game is HUGE. Need to get up on NY because they don't play well from behind.

My "expert" analysis on that goal is that when Belfour looked up and saw the rebound on Mario's stick, he soiled his pants !!!!!! (LOL)..... I was at that game also.
Me, too. Was right above the Jagr and Lemieux goals. And, as the Master said, You had to be there to believe it!!

I’m not too concerned about today. The Isles were due to have a game in which they dictated their style on the Pens. I never had a doubt that this would be a roller coaster seven-game series and we are right on pace through four games.

Not overly concerned it is was a 2-1 double OT loss or this loss. Game is over. I expected to be be 2-2 coming out of the Island. But man, it is time for the superstars to step up and **** passing the puck, bury one, take it to the het and bury it. Sid needs to stop deferring to Guentzel and Rust. Go for it. Same with Geno.

I am sure there will people be on here traditionally parsing the goals,. the Pens scored 1. One late goal. Jarry doesn't matter if you aren't going to score. This game was a throwback from 2019. Letang was bad, Sid was ineffective, Guentzel and Rust were invisible.

Time to stop this crap. Start being the aggressors, the refs owe us Penalties but if you don't initiate stuff and just retaliate it won't work.

We have probably seen the last of Varlomov so we better figure out a couple ways to get the puck past Soroken. He has outplayed Jarry in both games he suited up.

Team would be better off with a healthy DeSmith

The team would be better if Rust and Guentzel extracted their heads from their asses and started playing hockey. The Isles have crushed Guentzel every chance they get and he has been invisible. I don't have an excuse for Rust. They have looked slow and maybe they are even playing scared or at least tentative. They just haven't brought their battle level even close to where it needs to be to be effective in this series. Should it continue, I doubt like hell it would matter if our goalie was Patrick Roy or Ken Dryden.
