OT: Pittsburgh's "Best City" status & the resulting conversation we have 2-3 times/year

Pittsburgh will become more expensive as more people move here (already happening)

Please explain where you're getting the idea from that people are moving to Pittsburgh. I don't live in Pittsburgh anymore and only visit family there occasionally, but here are the census numbers since 1950.

1950: 676k
1960: 604k
1970: 520k
1980: 423k
1990: 369k
2000: 334k
2010: 305,704 (Wikipedia)

The 2013 estimate is 305,841 (Wikipedia). The 2014 population is 305,412 (PPG). If people have indeed been moving to Pittsburgh in the past 5 years, it looks like they're simply displacing people on their way out.

The bleeding has stopped in the city, and the burbs are still growing, mostly north (still) and west. I think the County has shown some growth. And they can't convert empty bldgs. into condos fast enough dahntahn.

Was watching the wonderful, incredible movie, "The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh" and one scene that jumped out at me was when the little kid was driving the convertible with Dr. J in the front seat, think it was on Bigelow, there was a sign in the background that said Pittsburgh Population 450,000. (Not sure of exact number but it was mid 400k). Anyways, the city population is at least 100k less now than in the mid 70's.. That of course is within city limits, would be curious to see numbers comparing then and now of the very subjective "Pittsburgh metro area." I'd have to assume the area is more now with thriving communities north, west, and south.

I read recently that the Pittsburgh MSA reached 1.2 million jobs for the first time ever. And the year job growth increased by 32k compared to last year.

I might be wrong that the population (within the city) is increasing, but I can't see how it doesn't increase now that the bleeding has stopped and job growth is continuing.

Souf has no room to talk on the situation. Completely clueless. About a year ago on TOS he openly mocked people that said Lawrenceville was a trendy place, and showed he hadn't visited in 10-15 years.

Discount anything he says about the city.
I have literally no idea what you're talking about. I'm in pittsburgh 4-5 times a year on average.
Why would I mock people calling lawrenceville trendy when I've only driven by to check out the new Children's Hospital?
People LOVE to make up things I've said...which is unnecessary..I don't shy away from owning my own opinions.

Advice for the board, stay away from ripping Lawrenceville.. I said that it wasn't all that great either and got crucified.. Some things you just avoid on the Lair and that is one of them..

Oh no, that is fine. If you don't like it, that is your opinion. Souf was criticizing it from a perspective of ten years ago before it redeveloped, talking about it being rundown, hookers, etc.

Yeah..that definitely was NOT me.
I literally had to google "lawrenceville" when you made your initial post...so there is no way I had an opinion about it.

you've got the wrong poster.

Talking about Lawrenceville, I know someone posted above about the Almono Flats District breaking ground in Hazelwood. I can't remember his name, but a hip, local restauranteur also recently announced he was gutting a large building there for a new eatery. If Hazelwood is getting redeveloped, things are changing!!!!!

Our plan is to sell our home here in Ingomar and buy a flat downtown and a home farther south (or near to where our children settle). Probably not for another 5 years or so. I'd love living in a condo downtown.

We'll be fleeing Allegheny County & P-R taxes. 2-3 years.

New city motto based on what both sides have to say....

Pittsburgh:
Come for the 2-3 days you'll spend near downtown each month
Stay for the cheap suburbs
