OT: Steelers hire former Falcons HC

Will we win any games if the D has a bad day and gives us 30 points by scoring 30
+ ourselves? Will we compete in a shootout if we need to? Or is it again a hopeless cause if the other guys put up 20+
Yes
I guarantee it
Feel better ?

Bowers would be huge to get but just can't see him sliding too far down. There are alot of good O-linemen and wouldn't mind seeing them take a tackle again if there is one there they like. Slide Jones to LT and get Moore out of there.
They're going to have to lock down the OL with this hire.

Jones-Seumalo-???-Daniels-???

They could go RT and then C in the first two rounds or find an affordable RT in free agency and go early with a C. I'm leaning toward a rookie C because it's one of those positions you like to have a long-term answer, IMO.

If we look at who the Steelers interviewed, Smith was the only option based on wanting experience. Brown, given what he did in Carolina, would've been a terrible hire and Johnson had no experience. I think we have to face reality that 17 years without a coaching tree is a major deterrent for young coaches with aspirations to be a HC.

major falcons fan here. he was beyond awful at play calling for the falcons. had no qb and never utilized his skilled positions. was hideous in 3 years but apparently good in tenn. maybe an oc but sure as hell no hc. sorry but he is dead meat without a good qb.

He fits everything they want. From hiring Andy Weidl as assistant GM (who specializes in line prospects) to Mr. Rooney and Tomlin emphasizing wanting to be a physical football again. It makes perfect sense.

I like the direction. I think it's perfect. I'm just hoping it works in todays world!

Go back to Georgia. OT Amarius Mims seems to be on a few mock drafts that have the Steelers taking him in the first round. His teammate Sedrick Van Pran is probably the highest rated C in the draft and should be there in round 2. Zach Frazier out of West Virginia may be an option at C as well.

I think Powers-Johnson and Frazier are the top two. They could go back-to-back OL. I think adding a mid-tier veteran at RT would be more prudent with Powers-Johnson or Frazier at center.

Yeah...I've seen Powers-Johnson mentioned too. I do like the idea of filling both those spots on the O-line either through the draft or FA. They need replacements there this year.

By cherry picked you mean his last two years as an OC.

If we can actually sustain some drives instead of burning out the defense - we’ll win more games
Pretty simple

Tomlin literally hired a former HC as a coordinator . That’s a good thing to actually have experience and qualified coaches in the room .

Yinzers are a stupid breed

Yeah, you're brilliant. The Atlanta years totally don't count. Weird, though, because you've defended Tomlin on the basis of his defense before. It's almost like you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Another question to consider: assuming Arthur Smith is exclusively the OC/play caller, who do they hire for QB Coach? Alex Van Pelt is on the market; I’d love to bring him back to Pittsburgh. I’m sure there’s up-and-coming 20-something’s that could also be considered, but I just don’t expect them to go that route at this point.

Bingo. But we have some dolts who don't count those years, I guess, as if he had nothing to do with Atlanta's offense.

Would it surprise me if our offense is better this season? No. The QB knows he's playing for his job, and he and everyone else are a year older. But look at the two teams in the Super Bowl. Those offenses are innovative. This just reeks of the same cake with different icing.

You are entitled to your opinion, but the direction this team is going is the wrong way.

Kansas City stopped the run Sunday and Jackson was lost. Everyone is looking what Smith did his last 2 years at Tennessee, but more importantly what happened the last 3 years.

Easy to be innovative when you have Debo McCaffry Ayuk and Kittle. For the chiefs having Kelce and Mahomes allows Reid to be more innovative. And while the chiefs Wr may not have the same talent as the Steelers wr on paper they actually buy into the team concept id take rice over Pickens and dropson any day

Oh and that innovative chiefs offense put up 17 points against the ravens and struggled in the second half of the year

And yet, they're still playing football. Funny how that works.

They had a 17-3 lead, or something like that, much of the game and protected it. When they needed to push the ball downfield again, they did. Got the first down and sealed it. They've also played in six straight AFC Championships and have made four of the last six Super Bowls. And they've found a way to modify their offense with completely different personnel, including losing arguably the best receiver in football.

If he drops to 12 (and he might) then Denver is a team who could be willing to make deal, as they needs more picks. Some mocks have Bowers sliding to #15, so it just depends on what certain teams decides to do earlier.

If he had a legit offense the last 3 years, he wouldn't have been on the market.

Get a legit center this off-season...that'll go a long way

He called the f'ing plays in Atlanta. He basically was the OC.
Dick LeBeau was 12-33 as a head coach. Was he a bad DC?

I don't think Smith was the best hire the Steelers could've made, but some guys aren't cut out for head coach and could be overwhelmed with the overall responsibilities of the job. I'm hoping that's the case because they hired an OC who is best fit for the current skillset of this roster, which is basically trying to find a way to win with below average QB play.

It won't, the teams with modern offenses will leave them in the dust like a rusting antique and as usual they'll be watching on TV by the divisional round.

Let's just sit back and see what he does.

I hated the Matt Canada hire. I felt like Tomlin was reaching beyond reaching with him, hoping regular season success would cover up misfortune.

All Canada ever wants is a payday, however he can get it.

This hire is almost like Todd Haley to me. A good coach who knows how to organize like a head coach, after being one. And a guy whose seen success via calling his own plays.

At what point in the draft - if they don't fix it in free agency - do they address the center position?

Edit: looks like I should have refreshed before posting.

Early. Top 2 rounds if there is one there they are confident will step in right away and improve the position. I would say the 2nd round because there doesn't seem to be one rated as a first round pick but a couple that may work as a 2nd round guy. The O-line still has work to be done. Rooney just said so himself.

Bowers will be gone and the price to move up to get him will likely cost them at another position...mainly the O-line and another starter at tackle or center. Just my two cents.

What makes San Fran's offense "modern?"

The one reason I like watching San Fran's offense is because I feel like I'm a teenager again. This is 1990's football. This is straight out of his dad and Alex Gibbs playbook that Gary Kubiak and Troy Calhoun were running in Houston.

What's old is new.. Guys in college like Saban/Duzz have created defenses over the years to stymy one read passing attacks. Now we're seeing more and more old school progression passing, triangle reads so much so that NFL defenses are getting out of pattern match and running straight zone and man.

In no particular order: inside backer, corner, center would be my top priorities. After those, the DL.

I think they'll keep Moore and switch him to RT.

After drafting Jones they tried Moore at RT during training camp and he struggled to make the transition. That was why Jones ended up there after the Okorafor fluff. Moore is not a starting tackle at the NFL level I think. They need to bulk up the tackle position and center early in the draft I believe.

Getting somebody to replace Cole at center is needed though.

Holcomb and Roberts seemed to be pretty good additions at inside linebacker. Finding another backup there would help. I like Kwan Alexander in that role.

The problem with Alexander and Holcomb is both rarely last a whole season.

Again they had the best qb in the game and te. Easy to be innovative with superior talent

They throw downfield, they aggressively throw dangerous passes into the middle, receivers are open with room to run. They run the ball more than anyone 45%, but at the same time Mr. Irrelevant has 31 TD passes and 4200 yards passing, modern, old school, who cares? what they are not most focused on like the Steelers is "protecting the ball" the ball is often at risk thrown into areas of high risk and high reward 31 TD passes, Kenny 6! Whatever it is I want that.
