OT: The forgotten PENS

Its hard to not notice that Malkin has played a lot better the past few games, Eller has been great, Smith has played better and Bunting has really settled in. Sidney Crosby obviously is still great.

That all said, the young guys like Puustinen, O'Connor (especially), St. Ivany and Joseph are all noticeably better. You notice the legs and the intensity.

O'Connor really looks like he may be about to turn into a really good NHL player. How he has been using his size and speed lately along with his calm have really stood out.

It is a little late, but they are close enough that it is great to see them playing their best right now and for some guys to really emerge as solid roster pieces regardless (meaning the four guys in the last paragraph and Bunting).

The team needed a shakeup. They’re not better without Jake, but that move woke the team up. Would have preferred they just fired the coach, but the Guentzel trade snapped the team out of its lethargy.

Goals by Shea, Joseph, and Eller ..... great secondary/depth scoring ..... Sid, Geno, and Rust didn't have a point and the Pens won 4-1.

Shea and St Ivany played 13-14 minutes which is more than Sullivan usually gives the 3rd line defense in big games .... and they played really well which helps the team a great deal ...... simple solid game without mistakes !

Ned was GREAT in goal again ...... hopefully he can keep it up !

There has been improvement up and down the lineup but it's especially nice to see some young guys developing and doing very well and the older guys with more inspiring play !

It was tough to lose Jake but Bunting really brings an element to the team that we really needed.

Up next Tampa Bay Saturday at 1PM !

That game was like watching an old school Pens vs Caps game. Good to have meaningful games down the stretch.
Only goal given up was at the end of a 5-3 PK.

The way they're playing the past couple weeks, IF they can get in to the playoffs, they actually could advance??

Shame they pissed away those games last month. Just pathetic over that stretch, and mostly the same cast??

Sid has been Sid, but everyone else sleep walking. And Jarry sucked as usual.
Quite a conundrum!

Seriously, where TF has THIS team been all year?
I was particularly interested to see if they would change the way they played at the start of the 3rd period up 3 goals. Sullivan has taken a lot of heat for this and rightfully so, but it did appear that the team was more focused on protecting that lead. I didn’t notice only one guy on the forecheck or anything like that but it did appear they were more responsible defensively.

I was rooting against this team a month ago. I wanted them to jump up in the draft.

That was as well as I have seen them play with something on the line in years. The first thought is.....if they only played 4-5 other games with that same approach once they got the lead, they would be comfortably in the playoffs.

Ned was great. You can ride a hot goalie. We have seen the Pens in the past get beat by journeymen goalies before (Glenn Healy and Dwayne Rolason come to mind). Nut Ned is exactly the type of veteran goalie I was clamoring for 2019-2023 that neither Rutherford or Hextall did.

Malkin is playing his best hockey since the first week of the season. All of a sudden he is dangerous out there.

The guy I am most impressed with, and amazing that Sully has finally given a shot to O'Connor. DOC is a heckuva player. He is not a 30 or 40 goal scorer, but given the time and opportunity he can score 20-25 and create issues with his forecheck.

Also like what I see from St. Ivany. Reminds me alot of John Marino but bigger.

Like FK, I was rooting for the tank.....but now I mean you might as well go for it. Unfortunately I feel they will come up just a bit short. Dug too deep of a hole.

Now is not the time for 87 and 71 to be tired... they should be invigorated.
They get basically one last chance.
what does anyone know, the rooks and new G are the ones making this happen.

Caps, Flyers and Red Wings all lose in regulation Friday night. Huge results for the Pens!
Good news ! ....... now is our chance to pick up ground, should be Playoff atmosphere in game tomorrow against Tampa Bay, need to bring a win home badly ...... won't be easy as TB is 10-1-1 in their last 12 games and Vasilevskiy playing well in goal recently ...... would like to see us play a highly structured, positionally sound game, and create some offense off transition, and hope Ned remains a hot goalie ! ....... reminder, game starts at 1 PM (ET) and is on ABC and ESPN+ ...... GO PENS !!!!!!!

This is what you never see happen. In a sense, it’s kinda the opposite of what happened to Pitt hoops. During championship week everything that could go wrong for Pitt with other teams did go wrong and Pitt slid out of the tourney. Here with the Pens everything that could go right with other teams has gone right. I remember a month ago, Jay Caufield or someone like that said it was over for the Pens because they would need to play .800 hockey down the stretch just to have a chance. And for a team like the pens who were a team well below .500 and couldn’t string three wins in a row together were incapable. The teams in your tweet have gone an incredible 1-16 in their last 6 games, while the Pens went 5-1. Without that 1-16 slide, we’d still be jockeying for a better first round pick.

Hey San Jose: screw you and your first round draft pick. I hope it’s in the 20s. Seeing how tanking won’t probably help us at this point as I assume we can’t have a top ten pick now, I love them winning. I want them to go in the playoffs and have a great run.

Good post, although I don’t see a run. Sullivan has had a lot in common with Mike Tomlin. And squeezing into the playoffs and being fodder for the opposition would be icing on the cake.

They should sell tshirts in the strip with their faces on the front. “Mike and Mike”. Just not sure what the tag line should be at the bottom.

Young Flyers fans right now.

Guess Torts little post game “pep” talk didn’t help a lick. Scumbag Flyers and their fans deserve all the misery they get.

Is Tampa usually this physical of a team? They are throwing some serious weight around this 1st period.

Pens played a great 1st period but only up 1-0 as Vasilevskiy keeping TB in the game ..... Pens getting a lot of offense from transition but hard to beat Vasilevskiy ...... have to stay structured, well positioned and get pucks in deep, don't make mistakes in neutral zone .... TB can strike at any time !
