Our Long National Nightmare is Over!

Well when a horrid USC team takes them to OT, not so fast….

That USC team was probably not quite as bad last month as they are now, cause they've sustained a bunch of injuries, and they've at least been competitive with everyone they've played.

Purdue is on the shortlist for worst team in the P4. And Penn State is 48-4-1 against Maryland, including mostly dominating victories lately. So it would have to be either Minnesota or Washington. Can't say either one of those teams impresses me. Maybe Minnesota'll get them up there.

I really don't care that much about Penn St. I just wanted to create a thread title with a nudge nudge wink wink to the results of Tuesday night without it getting deleted. It worked

Washington is terrible. They lost 21 starters and will never be heard from again.

Inefficient to me is what, like, Florida, Texas, USC, Miami, Florida State, etc. have done over most of the last decade or so - top 10 classes and losing/underwhelming seasons.

Penn State, on the other hand, is pretty much succeeding with where they recruit. They just don't usually recruit at an elite level.

2020 - 15
2021 - 21
2022 - 6
2023 - 14
2024 - 15

They're not Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, etc. You won't see any of those schools landing WPIAL 3-stars any time soon. Penn State is just not in that top tier - plain and simple. They can dislike Franklin for not getting them over the hump, but he's done a pretty good job of at least getting them to the hump.
Penn State's recruiting problem is interesting. They attract plenty of very good talent but because they mainly still rely on PA, NY/NJ, VA, and DC, they have a definite ceiling on that talent. They also have an athletic department that is constantly begging for money for one project or another or a buyout and they really don't have the fanbase commitment to go big on NIL. So, they alleviate that by playing a very weak OOC schedule, relative to their talent level, most years.

They have one of the peakier/valleyer EKG models to follow. National Championship in '91. Then they're basically Pitt until they go 11-1 in 2000. Then they're basically Wake Forest until they rip off three consecutive double digit win seasons, including a playoff appearance, from 2016-2018. Then three years of being Wake Forest again until 11-2, followed by 14-1 and a National Championship cameo.

Weird program. But it's tough to say they'll be down forever. They're like the college football version of the Rams, who have lowkey played in 4 Super Bowls since '99.

Yea. They are the opposite of Pitt and Penn State. Pitt is 7-5 most years. PSU is 10-2 most years. Washington rotates between Pitt and UVa most years and then is Ohio State once a decade.
