Panther-Lair Pandemic Fantasy Draft Conversation & Dialogue

Well ... hopefully you will make better picks in this draft than you did in the last one and I won't have to be a jerk this time.

My team was solidly middle of the pack!

Pick Name
1 Fkthomas
2 DT
3 SMF
4 Joe Panther Fan
5 Bethlehemjohn
6 Cougar
7 4Mark_Marty
8 BballinsiderfromPitt
9 Ajntrw
10 SpecialSauce
11 8MissTheOldDayss
12 Pittchagg
13 Recruits
14 Fsgolfdr
15 thirteenNINE
16 Ski11585

This draft order is some BS!

Good idea!
So hopefully everyone brings their draft talk into this thread, thus leaving the draft pick thread clean from discussion. Some of us did a draft on the pay side and there was only one thread which got very cluttered and at times was difficult to follow along in the draft. Ideally it would be great if we all click between this thread and the other one and use this one to have fun and the other one for “just the facts”.

I have more time on my hands than usual, so I'd appreciate a few thoughts from each drafter on their picks. Would be nice to gather some Pitt history during out quarantine.
Well my pick was the only easy one. It doesn’t take any brilliance or thought to take Charles Smith. But he’s the only logical #1 overall pick. In my opinion, there are no real obvious picks at#2. I won’t mention any names because I don’t think we should influence folks who are drafting but DT can go in a couple different directions in my eyes.

Ah come on...Matt Miklasevich is the obvious choice. You need a good enforcer inside. Keep the lane clear.

Apparently I showed up only minutes after DT left the board....

Here's a few stories of Charlie. We were both Freshman at Pitt in fall of 1984. I saw him the second day I was on campus in the towers lobby hanging out by the top rail of the cafeteria. I went up to him and told him that I was thrilled he came to Pitt.

Fast forward to the fall of 2016 and Pitt is getting ready to play Marquette at the Garden, our home away from home. Game is at noon, so I drive into town early, park in a garage right next to the arena and decide to have a drink or two at a little dive bar. It's me, the bartender and one other guy and then Charles comes in by himself. It's weird because you don't want to totally impose on the guy, but you also want to chat if possible. I give him about 15 minutes and then start talking to him. Told him that I went to Pitt with him, yada, yada, yada. We end up talking for about an hour until it is close to game time. He goes to bathroom, and I figure that is the last I'll talk to him. But no, he comes out of the bathroom, asks if I have a business card so we can talk again and invites me to walk into the arena with him. So, I walk into MSG with Charles and of course, he knows everyone. He is as nice as can be as he talks to all of the ushers, cops, etc,,,,, that he sees and knows from when he played there. Now we are in the arena and once again, I think we are going to part. This time he invites me up in the private elevator with him that takes you right to the floor level. I now am on the court and the first person we see is Scott Barnes. At this point, I had already heard that he was a pompous ass and he showed me that side almost immediately. Charles introduces me to him and Barnes gives me a major brush off. Finally, a security guard made me go to my seat and Charles got to sit right off the floor, so that was the end of my time with him. He was just a genuinely nice guy. And we beat Marquette too.

Class, always class with Charles Smith.

Question - should we really count Khem Birch? The guy didn’t even last an entire season. He is a hair above counting a guy like Chris Gatling.

If SMF makes the tough call to go with himself @ #3, I am guaranteed one of the players I most want @ #6. ;)

If anyone has his contact info - he was last seen a half hour before I called it, and has no idea we started. May not make it back tonight....

As everyone here knows, you never know what you are going to hear from SMF. He could go chalk or he could go Cam Wright!

SMF does not know we started the draft tonight. I think we should give him 4 hrs from 7am tomorrow if he does not show early.

Great story -- thanks for sharing.

I didn't know this started tonight. Just got up to let the cat out so now I've had to really think about this before going back to bed.

Smith and Blair were the obvious first 2. Now, things get interesting. Do I go for another Big since there is a lack of them? A PG since I won't get a high level one next time around?

I'm going with Sam Young. I feel as if wing players aren't as valuable in college basketball as a dominating PG or C, especially because this country produces such an oversupply of skilled or semi-skilled 6'4-6'7 SG/SF but Young is probably the best pure scorer in Pitt history. One of just a few "go get us a bucket" guys so that's where I'm going.

Hard to fault Sam Young here. He went @ #4 on the pay board draft.

I am now guaranteed a shot at one of the players I covet due to the scarcity of Bigs & Guards in this draft.

I liked a suggestion yesterday that people post their pick with their best season stats, thoughts, memories, vids, articles, whatever. I'm going to spend some time after my pick putting a few things together to post here for dialogue.

@fkthomas
@DT_PITT
@Sean Miller Fan

You have a cat? I’m not surprised.

Personally - I would put Clyde Vaughn ahead of Sam. Vaughn was all we really had on those early Big East Teams, during the Golden Years of the Conference. If they had introduced the 3 point line a year early - Clyde would have averaged over 25 points that last season.

SMF-you’ve always been a big Sam Young guy right? This pick makes sense.

btw you made a good point with your Blair and Smith comment. I had earlier made the comment that Smith was the obvious #1 pick. But if you evaluate a player here for the purposes of their top year and not a 4 year career, dejuans numbers are just as strong as Charles’. So I suppose Blair and Smith were 1A and 1B.

Valuable in what way? For a draft like this given the available positions? Probably. But for that 08-09 team? I think a case can be made that Young was more valuable.

I don't agree, but am open to you proving it on me with facts & data.

What do you think @thirteenNINE ?

I am almost positive the advanced stats won't back up my argument. So I'll happily concede if that's the case. I just feel like there were more games where Young's scoring proved what Pitt needed to win the game. But by that same token, all Pitt's losses in that regular season were games were Blair was in foul trouble so...

I'll just say Young is my favorite player and that I think he's underappreciated when people talk about that team (which usually ends up being about how great Blair was or the huge shots Fields hit, not Sam singlehandedly dragging Pitt into the Sweet 16).
