Panther-Lair Pandemic Fantasy Draft Conversation & Dialogue

I am almost positive the advanced stats won't back up my argument. So I'll happily concede if that's the case. I just feel like there were more games where Young's scoring proved what Pitt needed to win the game. But by that same token, all Pitt's losses in that regular season were games were Blair was in foul trouble so...

I'll just say Young is my favorite player and that I think he's underappreciated when people talk about that team (which usually ends up being about how great Blair was or the huge shots Fields hit, not Sam singlehandedly dragging Pitt into the Sweet 16).

Young's my all-time 2nd fav wing after Clyde Vaughn, who was a rebounding machine AND higher scoring while playing with 1/3rd the talent. No doubt Sam was the more efficient scorer though. It's close, a close comparison IMO.

Personally - I would put Clyde Vaughn ahead of Sam. Vaughn was all we really had on those early Big East Teams, during the Golden Years of the Conference. If they had introduced the 3 point line a year early - Clyde would have averaged over 25 points that last season.

That is exactly why I just made Vaughan my pick.

I would imagine there are a lot of people here who never actually saw him play, which is a shame. His junior year, our first year in the Big East, was great. 21.9 ppg, 9.2 rpg, and as you mention, before the three point shot came into the game. He would have easily average two or three more points per game if they had a three point line when he played.

He's on the list as a small forward and that's where he mostly played, but I think he also played a little at the four at Pitt. Especially that junior year, before Keith Armstrong started getting a lot of minutes at the five. But in any event, that makes the 9.2 rebounds per game that much more impressive, that it came from a guy who mostly played the three.

Chip Watkins also took some pressure off him inside his Sr. year.

Blair is my favorite Pitt player ever but Young isn’t far behind.

I think their skill sets (along with Fields) just complemented one another. They were both great and depending on the make up of a team you couldn’t go wrong with either one of them.

Man if Levance could have stayed fit & healthy....

Looks like I'll be going PG with my pick.

Oh, I guess I should also say that Vaughan's junior year, our first year in the Big East, was also my freshman year in college. So I've always had a soft spot for Clyde.

And a little personal story, not nearly as good as John's Charles Smith story, but one Sunday in the spring of my freshman year I had gone home for the weekend. Sunday afternoon my dad took me back to campus. He says hey, lets go get some dinner before I head home. So we are walking down Forbes and Vaughan is walking the other way towards us. My dad says, hey, I think that's Clyde Vaughan. I say yeah, that's him. So as we are walking past my dad says something to him, something about how he's a great player or something, and Vaughan shakes our hands and has a minute or two conversation with us before we go on our way. He was as nice as could be to two random strangers he met on the street.

Nice story. Thanks. I just missed Clyde. I was a senior in High School when he was a senior in college.

I was able to meet most of the entire team when I was in College. Matt Miklasevich was the first guy that I met and he couldn't have been nicer.

I knew Steve Maslek, Tico Cooper, Curtis Aiken and Scott Columbo pretty well. All of them we always cool and we always just treated each other like fellow college students.

Here's a story. Steve Maslek used to always come to our parties on McKee Place.

At the end of one cupcake game, Mas was at the line and when it got quiet, we all yelled: "Hey Mas ... make this and we'll buy you a beer!"

When he came to the next party, he bitched at us because Evans made him run laps for that!

Fellas, I need you to bring some order to the chaos here. Start your pick posts with the Round and Pick number. This is the equivalent of putting headings on your homework--elementary school stuff.

Let's not have the pandemic turn us into WVU alums.

Pick #5, round 1

PF Brian Shorter

Brian was a McDonald's All American who was prop 48, meaning he didn't get the SAT/grades scores to play his first year. So he sat out and started his last 3 years at Pitt.

His Soph year he averaged 19.6 pts and 9.6 reb/game. His Junior year, he averaged 20.6 pts and 9.4 reb/game.

Brian developed what I think was a health issue with his hands and was not the same player his Senior year. I'm sure someone else can chime in with was was exactly wrong with him.

Had he been able to play his Freshman year with Charles Smith and Jerome Lane, we may have made a run at the National Championship. In fact, we should have even without him.

This guy was as talented as any player we have ever had at Pitt and if not for his health and academic issues, he may have!

In the draft on the pay board, I went with Levance, so this time I decided to go a different direction with my team.

So I just wanted to touch base on process for a moment. This is the draft conversation thread. Please post your picks on the Draft Picks Thread, then come here for conversation about anything related to the draft.

On the Pay board thread, things got super bogged down doing both in one thread, and it ran out of steam near the end.

If folks have a better idea, I am all ears.

With the 6th pick I select PG "Black Magic" Karl Krauser.

From a statistical perspective, Krauser was simply the best PG of the modern era. A firey leader with position flexibility, and I placed significant value on his efficiency from behind the arc. Karl had 7.6 offensive win shares, & 8.7 defensive win shares for a total of 16.3 during his career. Simply a great great player, at a position of great need as our PG's do not go deep, and we don't have that many great shooters these last 40ish years.

The Junior season: 16.0p/5.9a/4.8r/1.8s and he shot 39.4% from 3, on almost 5 attempts per game. He only made 2nd team All-Big East even though he outperformed Gerry McNamera on almost every level that year.

Me too. Never played a fantasy draft before. Was anticipating things would speed up today.

It's too much work trying to keep conversations out of the draft selection thread. I give up. Will get back on the wagon if things really break down like at the end of the "Other Draft".

I had my sites set on Levance even if I had higher pick ... Hit some of the biggest shots in Pitt history ... Always gave 110%.... Anchored 1 of the best teams in Pitt history ... Love Levance always

One major area of weakness of Pitt through the years has always been shooting guards . Jason Mathews is the best shooting guard available in this draft .

We have done a bunch of these over the years with all Pitt players, one with all players from ACC for a given year and one or two from BE days. Always lot's of fun.

So far so good -- I am newer Pitt fan compared to a lot on these boards. Moved to Pittsburgh in Mid 90's from Philly and started watching Pitt's team with Kelli Taylor and Cummings, but really got into Pitt with Blair/Young team, first Pitt Home game I went to was a Feb Game against Depaul and Blair if I recall correctly had 20+ pts and 20+ boards. I literally went home and signed up for season ticket wait list. Two years later became a season ticket holder and have been once since.

Last 4 years have been rough....Looking forward to next year.

I remember watching Gray lose in the NCAAs from Hillman. Pretty sure there were more than a few audible curses heard.

And when I think of Lamar, I'll always think of our dear friend UP#1 always clamoring for Moore to play ahead of Patterson 'cause Moore could dunk fancy.

That 2011 Brad and Ashton team had an argument as the best team in the country and ended up fourth in Kenpom, I can do worse than starting with those two.

Get a good pick setting C next pick that can defend & you are gold.

Gibbs was stolen from me so I went with the under appreciated Michael Young and will play him at his natural position the 4 . I will have a happy MYoung on my team .

Well some voters will certainly not value culture when voting in the Tourney. He did score a lot of points.
