Panther-Lair Pandemic Fantasy Draft Conversation & Dialogue

Also, I guess it's a sign that I am old that I have three guys who played 25 or more years ago. Unlike many here, I've seen them all play live.

I’ll bet every (metaphorical) dollar I have that I know who SMF has got next, provided that this player is still on the board when the snake comes back around.

So I picked Garrick Thomas as my shooting guard. I really didn't remember him being this good a shooter, but here are his numbers from his senior season:

57.4% on twos, 44.7% on threes, 92.9% on ones, 66.3% true shooting percentage

By way of comparison, that season Jerry McCullough shot 32 more threes and made 4 fewer.

Second draft in a row where George Allen has gone shamefully low.
Some yrs ago George Allen showed up at my office and was a pretty decent guy . I was going to pick him , but like quite a few of the guys I wanted to pick he was taken before it was my turn .
He was a very good guard , very quick , but he wasn’t 6’1 maybe 5’10 .
My team is as follows
Pg ..Ronald Ramon
Sg ..Jason Mathews
Sf ..JJ Moore
PF ..Mike Young
C ..Gary McGhee
6th .. Trent Johnson

Not sure there’s a better shooting team out there with both RR and JM having had seasons were they shot 46% from 3 and MY shooting 54% from the floor . With all that shooting ability and having Gary McGhee and Trent Johnson setting picks there’s plenty of opportunities for JJ to get the hoop . With Ramon , Mathews , Young and JJ I doubt there’s a better FT shooting team out there either . Better bring your A game to outscore this team and with GM playing the 5 MY gets to defend the 4 .

Looking at previous rosters, I was thinking about the "All Airport Team". Remember back at those BB preseason mags, Dick Vitale would have lists, and one was "All Airport Team", meaning guys who really looked the part but it never translated on the court.

So I started thinking about some guys. Marlon Ferguson. Ed Turner. Dante Taylor. These are some to name a few.

Nice job executing your philosophy. Only real weakness I see is half your team has trouble with defense.

Can't be too mad about this lineup, six very efficient scorers and good rebounding and defense at every non Ashton position.

PG - Ashton Gibbs
G - Brad Wanamaker
F - Rod Brookin
F - Justin Champagnie
C - Andre Williams
C - Dante Taylor

Not a whole lot of defense being played by this team but sure would be fun to watch.

Actually you have two defensive black holes in that lineup....

The Gary McGhee pick was the critical pick plus Mike Young guarding the 4 is big . ( as opposed to him being the 5 )Trent Johnson was a pretty tough player , good rebounder too . JJ was one of the most athletic Panthers in the program history . Always thought he’d have been better off at a program like Louisville were they pressed all 90 ft . Won’t need much offense from JJ but at 6’7” he’ll defend the 3 pretty well . A little weak on the guards for D , but we are talking about Pitt guards and I picked off the best shooter in Mathews and there weren’t many left that were equal to Ramon . Wanted Gibbs , but was taken right before I picked . We’ll be primarily a zone D !

I actually don't see the second. Williams I don't have any data on but he seems pretty average though I'm willing to listen to objections, Brookin was above average, Champagnie made a lot of freshman mistakes last year but his defense graded out as above average to good (he was our best on court defender by a pretty good bit last year), and Brad and Dante grade out as very good to elite defenders.

Isolated on Justin quite a bit those last 6 games and he was constantly losing his man....

Brookin was a good offensive player, but would be considered a weak spot defensively.

Like I said, a lot of head turning and a lot of freshman mistakes but the numbers don't lie. We allowed fewer points with Justin on the court last year in every possible lineup combination because of his ability to challenge shots and clear the glass. He and Johnson are pretty far clear of the rest of the pack in that regard both overall and in the ACC.

Never saw him play, I just can go by steal percentage when you're looking at the 80s where he seemed to do okay but that's a pretty flawed metric.

IIRC, he was the kind of defender who would play for steals and try to jump the passing lanes pretty frequently. High risk, high reward. Which is the kind of thing that is great when it works, but it left him out of position an awful lot when it didn't. And he was never really in great shape (or good shape, or decent shape...), so when he did get out of position he didn't have the ability to recover very often.

He certainly does look like he took a very 80s approach to cardio in the old photos.

Another thing to be mindful of as we keep each other accountable...we can’t manipulate the numbers and take a guys scoring numbers from one year and combine them with his rebounding numbers from another. So if you use a guy that scored 18 points one year, and you deem that his best year, then he carries with him all of the other stats from that same year.

I happened to notice one guy, when posting his team, did the honorable thing and posted a players 2nd best year for PPG Because his rebounding numbers were higher that year. So he took the year where the overall stats were better but the PPG were not the players best.

we’ve seen guys posting stats from players from their time at other schools. I wouldn’t be surprised to see guys manipulating other stats too and trying to pass them off. :)

Bunch of real "winners" in this crew....

Probably should make sure that the player played a minimum of games in that season too. While I'd love to take Rod Brookin's sophomore year where he shot 53.8% from three I don't think that 5 games is a representative sample size.

Wish I had thought of that before we started.
