Pens in 7 indeed. Bring on the sharks

Great win tonight
-The 2 loser announcers hating on the Pens again. Saying we have not played anyone as good as the the Sharks. After the Pens win the cup they will say we are the worst championship team of all time. Comical. Both are also calling for Fleury, when he hasn't done squat this postseason. Fat chance Fleury plays. Love watching the hate from these 2 announcers.

I agree with edzo. The Sharks are a deeper offensive team than the Caps or anybody we faced. They're going to throw 3 awesone lines at us, butttttttttf, Jones is not as good as Holtby or any of the 3 goalies we have already disposed of. Burns will also be a handful to deal with on the back end.

I also agree that you'll see Fleury at some point in this series (probably junk time). San Jose is VERY good offensively and will probably hand us out ass in a game or 2. Pens in 6.

-Melrose picks the Sharks, lol. He's picked every team to beat the Pens in 6 games. The same with the ESPN experts, where 6 of them picked the Sharks to win out of 8, same thing in the last 3 Pens series.

-He also said the Pacific is the best league in hockey. Um, what? lol. The Pacific has 4 of the worst teams in the NHL with Arizona, Calgary, Vancouver, and Edmonton, its by far the weakest league.

-The Pens have played 18 playoff games, and have outshot the other team in 16 of those, most of the games lopsided. Sharks are 10th in goals against. Their goaltender better better play better than Holtby to even have a chance.

First round 7 of 10 predictions were for the Pens. Second round it was 4 of 10 and Melrose picking Caps in 7.

-With a Cup win the Pens will be the best NHL team overall the last 25 years, or quarter century. Huge bragging rights on the line. Get it like a Champion.

Fantastic win. This is going to be a great final. Sharks are fast and deep just like the Pens. Going to be a fun one.

Let's go Pens!

Why do some fans "celebrate" by referring to who wasn't positive or picked their team. WHO CARES! WE WON! Enjoy this! There are some franchises that never reach this point. This is 5th Finals in the last 25 years. That is great. That is a lot of these without being overrun and they are spaced out enough to really appreciate.

I don't care what a Milbury or Roenick or Jones picked or who they pick this next round. Doesn't matter. Why should it matter to you?

The reason people do this, is because it is fun to say, "Fcck You! I told you so!" as you wave your middle finger at them all. That's all it is.

I watched the last 5 minutes and it was quite entertaining. I dont root for ir care about the Penguins but I have to say I was pulling hard in those last 5 minutes for Crosby. He's too good a player and too good a kid to retire with only 1 Cup. I am rooting for him more so than the city or the Penguins' organization.

I also hate when teams like Tampa Bay make it far. Tampa can care less about hockey. Sure, they probably sell out but I was in Tampa during their series with the Red Wings last year and I assure you nobody cares. Well, more like 20,000 people care, the people who go to the games. Outside of that, they just dont have the fanbase and its not right for teams like that to make it. In Pittsburgh, for people under 40, hockey is religion. We might as well be Canada because hockey to Yinzers is the same as it is to Canadiens. So, for a team with a niche following to make it, I have a problem with that. So congrats to Crosby and congrats to foreign-sport loving Yinzers.

That's kind of true. I grew up in the '70s, and we didn't even know the Pens existed. They where on nobodies radar in the 'burgh. Well we did know about them, but didn't care at all, zero! It was all Steelers and Pirates. I guess there was a niche hockey fan base back then, but I personally knew exactly ZERO hockey fans growing up, I never, ever knew even a single person that actually played hockey as a kid growing up in the '70s, not one. Then in the mid-'80s, I'd argue with people that the Pens should leave and we should get an NBA team instead. I never watched any hockey game, other than the 1980 Miracle on Ice game, until the year the Pens won their 1st Cup, and from then jumped on the bandwagon and became a Pens-centric hockey fan. To this day I have never sat down and watched any hockey game that didn't include the Pens, except for the Olympics. But I am hard core for Pens playoffs, watch every game, so Go Pens!

So the Pens didn't deserve to make it far ever because we sure as hell didn't have a fanbase that cared prior to 1990.

And Pitt doesn't ever deserve to win anything?

Two things: First, you know the NHL was dreading a Tampa Bay/San Jose final. St. Louis/Pittsburgh was the best, but either one of those advancing was a relief for them. Second, my liver may not survive these finals. Guzzling wine or booze each game. My nerves can't take this.

Pens are slight favorites according to vegas

-As they should be. Every team from the metro division had a winning record against the West. Every single one. And the Pens beat the better teams in the playoffs and were the hotter team going into the playoffs. Vegas isnt dumb

I think this is a bit overstated.Over the last 10 years, the only time the SCF see a ratings spike is for Game 6 and especially Game 7 essentially no matter who's in it. Or, if Blackhawks are there. So, honestly, if either the Sharks or Pens win in less than 6 or 7, it's a bust for the NHL. And, it's been that way since the Hawks lost to St. Louis.

Me too. And Klonopin. It works. But yeah, I believe the KY State Legislature are calling for tax breaks for the amount of Bourbon I am consuming during these playoffs increasing their revenues.

Right on Owt. I pay no attention to these so called pundits. Hell they are wrong as much as right and what they say has no bearing on the actual results.

As to how great they say the Sharks are, no shit. They aren't in the finals by accident. And it may be true that the Pens haven't played a team as good as the Sharks. but did they mention that the Sharks haven't played a team as good as the Pens? Wait'll they get a load of us!

I did just read that, aside from the Penguins, the Sharks were the other hottest squad. Obviously, they're in the Finals, so there's that. But, I guess they were .500 in January and have gone 40-18-4 since. Should a be a lot of fun.

I mean first of all, their job is to call it like they see it. The Rangers beat the Pens the last two playoffs, the Caps had the overall best record this year, Tampa was in the Stanley Cup Finals last year. The Pens have not played well in the playoffs the last, oh...6 years. So pundits picking the opponent had a lot of justification. Secondly, I was surprised, but overall more of these experts picked the Pens and not the Caps to get to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Regardless.....man, your team is playing for a title. Revel in it. Enjoy it. Why would your reaction is...."well so and so said...": Ya sound like Hines Ward..."no one gave me a chance..."

Well, national pundits aside, what the predictions from the engaged hockey fans here?

-Pens win because of dominant forecheck play and speed. Pens wins because Matt Murray has an 11-4 record in the playoffs as a starter with a 93% save percentage. The last series wouldnt even have went 7 games if Flower didnt play. We are in the Cup Finals and we should be an absolute beast next season when we get rid of Flower and pick up another Elite fast wing or defensive player. Id prefer wing, followed by a Point defense men that can dominate a powerplay.

-Matt Murray is now 20-6 as a full time starter without sitting players. Time to sign him long term.

-Martin Jones is a streak player. Sometimes he is tough to beat, other times he doesnt show up. His stats are decent, but he is weak in other games. A full out press in the forecheck game with constant pressure should give him a lot of problems.

The Pens had a big fanbase in the 90s. If they lucked into a Cup run in the 70s and I was a fan of Toronto, Mtl, Bos, etc, Id be upset.

A team like Tampa Bay is kinda like a rent a team. There is no hockey culture, no fans, no kids playing hockey but the NHL said theres a lot of people living there so here's a team, an arena and some Canadiens and Russians.

Dude.....you are guessing. Tampa actually draws pretty well and has been a solid franchise for a decade or so now. Now the Florida (Miami) entry, not so much.

You should stick to EPL and College football TV contracts.

Arizona and Carolina should not have franchises. Their attendance numbers are terrible.

There are a lot of snowbirds from Canada and the USA that moved into the TB area, so they have more hockey fans than you'd think.

-Should also be pointed out. While ESPN is boasting San Jose as the greatest offense since sliced bread with their 3.5 goals per game in the playoffs, it seems no one wants to mention end of game empty net goals. The Sharks had 4 empty net goals against the Blues last series with no goaltender in the game when time was running out. They had 3 more empty net goals against Nashville. And 1 against the Kings. 8 Empty Net Goals in the playoffs. Talk about inflated stats.

Vegas isnt dumb

No, they aren't. Which is why if you look at the game and series odds you would see that Vegas essentially thinks that the Pens are a slight favorite based not on being the superior team, but because they have home ice advantage. If the Sharks had home ice advantage it is pretty clear that the Sharks would be a small favorite for the series right now.

I think the Pens are a little better and I think they will probably win the series, but it is likely to be a much closer series than you seem to be implying.

-I expect the series to be close. I dont expect the Sharks to score at will like many seem to think they will do. I also think the Sharks offense is overrated when someone boasts about scoring 3.5 goals per game and dont mention empty net goals.

Oh boy, more chips to put on my shoulder. More rage I can shove up someone's ass.

San Jose is very good. This is going to be an extremely difficult series. However, it is going to be difficult for the Sharks too.

So much is been made about Brent Burns and his ability to score from the point. However, nobody blocks more shots per game than the Pittsburgh Penguins. That will definitely be a factor in this series.

If they are able to get shots through and Joe Pavelski is able to tip them, like he has done throughout the playoffs, the Sharks are probably going to win.

However, if Pittsburgh continues to block shots at the rate it has since January, that is going to nullify a major part of San Jose's attack and likely would mean a Penguins victory.

The other major factor to keep your eyes on will be who hems in the other more effectively with their forecheck. If Pittsburgh can consistently disrupt San Jose's breakouts, as they did against New York, Washington and Tampa, they are going to be extremely difficult to beat.

Conversely, if San Jose can use its size to limit and slow down Pittsburgh, that would doom the Pens, IMO.

I think the Sharks are more talented than Pittsburgh - especially on the back end (and most especially w/o Daley - HUGE loss). However, I can't help but think that the match up likely favors Pittsburgh. I think Washington plays a lot like San Jose and while that certainly wasn't easy, we did handle them.

Conversely, all three of the teams the Sharks beat are big, heavy teams. We are going to test them in a way they haven't yet been tested. I'll be interested to see how that works out.
