OT - PENS ........

Pens trade Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor to Vancouver ..... in return Pens receive 1) 2025 1st round draft pick (which Vancouver received in JT Miller trade earlier in the day from NYR .... this draft pick is top 13 pick protected for the NYR for 2025), 2) Forward Danton Heinen, 3) RHD Vincent Desharnais ...... 6'7", 226 lbs, and 4) Forward Melvin Fernstrom .... 18 y/o, 3rd round draft pick in 2024 by Vancouver, unsigned at presenbt, plays in top Swedish pro league ........ the rebuild starts.

Very good start
Heinen isn’t a bad replacement for o‘’ Connor too

I don't know much about Vincent Desharnais, but he's 6'7" That's about 6'10" on skates.

I won't pretend to know anything about these guys...well Heinen being here a little bit. Our Hockeyniks....what say you about this trade?

They didn't really get younger though. 29 and 28 with Heinen and Desharnais. 18 with the Swedish kid and the pick. So I guess a 50/50 split.

Not even close to a hockeynik but the 2 guys the Pens let go were free agents at the end of the season and unlikely to be retained. So I’m guessing the 1st round pick was the key asset. Better than letting them walk for nothing.

It's funny, as soon as I heard the JT Miller trade to NYR and a 1st rd pick was coming back to Vancouver I thought that might clear the way for Pettersson to Vancouver. I just didn't think it would be only a couple of hours later so that was fast. Great trade for the Pens.

Yeah they did. The trade wasn't about the guys who will be on the Pens roster, it was about the 1st rd pick and Swedish 18 year old.

Pens beat the Rangers tonight 3-2 without Malkin and Crosby in the lineup ....... if they would play like they did tonight every night, they would win quite a few games ....... skated really well, nice structure, some physicality, defended overall very well (not withstanding Karlsson's bad turnover that lead to the Rangers first goal), gave the Rangers very little space on the ice and got really good goaltending ...... put it all together ...... interesting that the Pens had no shots on goal in the 3rd period and kind of hung on especially the first 12 minutes of the period but defended well enough, got excellent goaltending by Ned in that 3rd period and Pens killed 2 Rangers power plays in the last 6:15 of the game ...... goals by Lizotte, Rakell, and Tomasino ......... nice win ....... no I don't think we will make the playoffs ...... it was dads night so they got to see there sons win a game.

Well.......now....any win is not a good win. :-(

Not a good win, especially since it was against NYR, that could have long term effects on that 1st round pick

Well......remember, this year's pick is protected. If the Rangers retain it this year, then the Pens get their pick next year, even if it is 1st overall.

They have to kick Rakell. His value is through the roof right now.
There is a case to be made that with all the cap space they have they could go heavy into FA and maybe put a team together that could contend next year. If that’s the case maybe you keep Rakell one more year unless you can get really good value that can pros ie next year and beyond Just saying it may not be a slam dunk

Certainly there is that. But if Dubas is bowled over with a deal, he would be foolish to not engage.

Lost to the Flyers and now in Last Place.
So at this point, we’re banking on Dubas either hitting on every pick the next two years or flipping some of those picks to patchwork together a playoff-caliber roster? Is there any hope we even make the playoffs again or Crosby and Malkin at this point? Sad state of affairs.

Tough day to be a Pittsburgh sports fan… Pitt basketball loses and the Pens get drubbed by the Caps. Both teams had aging cores, but only one of them has been able to keep their championship window open.

Time to start paying attention to this year’s NHL draft class? I know McKenna and DuPont are the big names in future classes, but who would you want to take this year if we win the draft lottery?

it's a good day to be a Pens fan. The more the team shows they will not and cannot contend for the playoffs, the easier it is for Dubas to sell off guys like Rackell, Grezlyk and even Geno and Letang and Rust. Need to burn it down to the studs for a season or two......get a Matthew Schaefer or Michael Mina in this draft, another top 1 or 2 guys in 2026 and run it back.

Do you follow the hockey prospects that much? I saw Mina was the runaway favorite to be the top pick, but now he’s more like 5-7. What’s up with that?

He's still considered one of the top 2 choices. He's having a "banger" season as the kids say. You sure you are not confusing him with James Hagens?

It would be very 2025 Penguin-like for this team to get not one, but two goals from Ryan Shea in the same game and still lose.
We lost the SOG edge this period, getting out-shot ~7-1. Had some good bounces go our way but couldn’t capitalize… rough. Although at this point, another loss into horrible in the grand scheme of things.

Pens largely outplayed the Rangers for most of the game today ........ the difference was Shesterkin played well and Blomqvist did not.

It's funny concerning the Rangers. So if they pick in the top 13 this year, we default to next year's pick regardless of where it falls, even if it was #1 overall. But if the Rangers select 14 or higher, then we get their 1st rd pick this year.

So I have a hard time discerning what is best. A 14th overall pick would be okay. 15th. But if the Rangers go on a run, then it could be the 22nd pick or so. If they crash and burn this year, they don't have much room next year and could even crash further and perhaps the Pens get a top 10 pick next year. So who knows.

But it is tough to see where this goes.

We can't control where the pick ends up ........ it's all up to how the Rangers do.

If the pick is not in the top 13 this year, then we get the pick and have to hope it is in the 14-16 range and since the 14-16 pick is part of the lottery, that we win the lottery (very unlikely) and move up 10 spots to 4-6 .....

If the pick this year is in the top 13, then we get next years pick and have to hope it is a high pick (the Rangers tank next season) and we win the lottery and get an even higher pick ...... there is just no way at present to know how this will end up other than to wait and see what happens ......

The other thing that I think is possible is that Dubas uses this 1st round pick as an asset in a bigger trade to obtain good young NHL player(s) and/or a good prospect(s) in return ..... would depend on what the trade is on whether I would like this or not but flipping the pick might be in play if the return is really good.

I think we’re in a good position either way. From what I’ve read, this is a pretty deep draft class and we could land another solid prospect if it’s in the top 20. However, it also doesn’t hurt to have two lottery picks next year for the McKenna draft… it hurts to see them in this situation, but I like what Dubas is doing.

Geno with 2 goals and 2 assists

Karlsson 2 goals and 1 assist

Blomqvist came in during 2nd period with Pens down 3-0 in place of Ned and made 21 saves on 22 shots the rest of the way
Geno and Karlsson were really good. TRADE THEM!!! LOL Sid hit the crossbar and was robbed of a goal and a couple of assists.

As much as I want them to lose, it was nice to see the rare comeback win.

How ironic it was on Max Talbot bobblehead night and he was in the building. As the last time they came from 3-0 down to Philly and win was the sssssssssssshhhh game in the 2009 playoffs.
