OT - PENS ........

Throw in the towel.
This organization is lost.
No direction at all, has no clue what it wants to do.
Maybe make money, maybe fool people.

5-0 Loss
Pathetic!

I turned it on when it was 2-0. But Phil Bourque said that the Pens were still in it. So I watched for a while. After it was 3-0, the ol' 29er once again said that it might be 3-0, but you could just tell by the way that the game was going that the Pens were going to get back in it. I stopped watching for a while, but turned it on again a little later. It was now 5-0, there were something like 11-1/2 minutes still left in the 2nd period, and once again ol' Bourquey told me that with the way the game was going the Pens still had a good chance to win. So imagine my surprise when I saw the final score and the Penguins did not, in fact, come back and win the game.

Phil, I know part of your job is to shill for the Penguins. But when it's already 5-0 and it's not even half way through the second period yet, everyone knows what's up. You only make yourself look ridiculous pretending otherwise.

Pens regressing back to the mean. As several of us have been saying the “win streak” was fools gold.

This team is badly flawed. Dubas needs to clean house

Dubas should be flogged for signing Jarry and half the defenseman.
I think they offered Crosby stake in ownership after he is done playing for accepting 8.7 mil a season.

I’ve been mad because they’ve been winning, I wanted them to lose lose lose and get a top 5 pick…..but then again I’ve been saying that since the Islanders sweep

Yep.....that shilling made me long for the return of Bob Errey or even Steigy. It was cringeworthy.

Another loss. Outscored 5-1 the last two periods.
TBF, two of those were empty net goals. I couldn't watch today, but Jarry was barely above 80% save percentage. Not sure of the save difficulty of those goals, but just have to be above 90% to consistently win. Pens way outshot the Lightning today.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but I saw a lot of it and while the Pens had a lot more shots the quality of the shots that Tampa had seemed to be much better.

The Pens actually played a really good game today (one of their better) and were tied 2-2 with 3:03 to play in the 3rd period when they turned the puck over at their own blue line and Kucherov scored on a breakaway (more about that below) to make it 3-2 followed by 2 empty net goals.

Quick analysis of the 3 goals given up by Jarry .....
Goal #1 - Hagel came down the inner left wing against Karlsson and instead of Karlsson closing the gap and taking Hagel's body in the inner left circle, he backed off, gave Hagel room to change the angle and take a wicked, unimpeded shot from the inner left circle at the level of the hash marks where Hagel fired and roofed a laser beam that went just under the crossbar and hit the roof of the net over the glove hand of TJ ..... TJ was in good position but it was a great shot ....... if Karlsson steps up and takes the body he may well have either blocked or prevented the shot or at least hindered Hagel's follow through on the shot which may have slowed the shot some making it more likely the goalie could make the save.

Goal #2 - Shot by Kucherov near mid-ice out past the top of the circle, TJ was partially screened by his own man way out near the top of the circle and it looked like he didn't pick the shot up until late and by the time he reacted, it went by him ...... that is the one goal I thought was too soft.

Goal #3 - Acciari was pressured by Kucherov at his own blue line and turned it over ..... Karlsson was the only defenseman back and was way too wide on the opposite side of the ice and way too far up ice near the blue line, so when Acciari turned it over on the opposite side of the ice from Karlsson and Kucherov got the puck, he had a clear breakaway and scored on a bullet of a shot from just inside the hash marks over TJ's blocker side ..... how in a 2-2 game late in the 3rd period, Karlsson was so far out of position as the only d-man back (he should have been closer to mid-ice and farther back in the zone so that when Kucherov stole the puck, he would have been one on one against Karlsson instead of on a breakaway and the likelihood is he wouldn't score).

So really, the only goal that wasn't good with respect to TJ was Kucherov's first goal (Goal #2)...... and for anyone who watched the game, TJ made several really good saves in the 3rd period that kept the Pens in the game ....... and just in case anyone thinks that I think TJ has done well this season, well, he hasn't ...... overall for the year, he has been bad, the last month he has been somewhat better and played like an average NHL goalie over that time ...... Ned for the year has been just as bad as TJ if not worse ...... over the last month, Ned has also played somewhat better at slightly above average for an NHL goalie ...... the Pens have a lot of flaws, goaltending is one of many.

I mean it is simple as "don't turn the puck over at the blue to Kucherov". One of the 3-4 best players in the world.
Yup but that’s what this team has done for years now. Make dumb plays at the worst time. They don’t have goaltender who can erase those mistakes so the Pens lose a lot of games they generally play well but make undisciplined plays. That’s coaching. Either Sully is clueless and isn’t addressing these issues or the team has tuned him out.

It’s past time for a coaching change.

True, but if you do turn it over at your own blue line with the score tied 2-2 with 3:03 to play, you would hope that your only player left in the defensive zone, a D-man, would be in proper position to defend a steal and breakaway rather than skating up ice on the opposite side of the rink out of position ..... think defense first in that situation.

Sounds just like beer league. Except the D would have been changing or offsides at the other blue line.

And the sad part is, the guy who turned it over (Acciari) is only on the ice for his defensive play, and because he’s one of Sullivan’s favorites. Forwards who are good for about 5 goals a season, can’t be making game costing turnovers in their own end.
Puljujarvi wasn’t even on the ice, but Sullivan’s probably planning on scratching him for the next game, because
of that play 😊

Is anyone surprised by this colllapse. Anyone who has followed the Pens knew the “hot streak” was fools gold. This team has a ton of holes and one of them is in between the pipes. I’ll defer to Goalieman who forgot more about goal tending than I’d ever dream of knowing but I’ll bet any money Jarry let in at least 1-2 soft goals tonite. Dude may be physically talented but he’s a head case

Yes, in order to make the playoffs, from here on out they need to play about 15 games over .500.
Nope, that ain't happening.

The Penguins are like this old rock band, with only 1-2 original members left. The band used to chart hits, fill arenas. Now it is just a poor overaged cover band imitation of itself and relegated to playing county fairs. I never wanted it to come to this. I was hoping they had one more run, they don't. I would look to move everyone out, including Sid, don't subject him to this. Because this is totally uninteresting to me. You are neither watching good players in their prime, or good young players learning the ropes. It is just mishmash of nothingness.

They're in "no trade clause" hell.
Very few moves they can actually make. Really weird situation.
Need lots of waivers, but no one wants to go anywhere!

Then there's the goal tender fiasco. Absolutely no one anywhere close to being a premiere starting goalie, or even average.

People can feel bad for Sid, but he was the one who wanted the band to stay together.

I happened to see the 1st goal Jarry allowed tonight. It was a shorthanded goal on only the team's second shot of the game. Came from outside the top of the circle, and it just squeaked through him somehow. I doubt any other NHL goalie gives that one up.

It was a move they had to make, it was not working. But the Pens would lose 2-0 and people would blame Jarry for letting in a weak goal.
They are and have been a horrible defensive team. Underscoring the need for a top goalie. I agree that Jarry is not at fault for all these losses. However, when you struggle defensively, you can't have your goalie continuously allowing all those "cheapies".
