Here are the Post-Gazette’s top 10 college prospects in the class of 2024 and their college choice:
1. Quinton Martin, Belle Vernon (RB, 6-2, 205)
College: Penn State
Martin is the No. 1-ranked player in the state by Rivals.com and No. 51 in the country. He was recruited by colleges across the country and some wanted him as a DB. But Martin decided he wanted to be a RB and Penn State wanted him as a RB. Pitt, Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame were among his other scholarship offers.
2. Cole Sullivan, Central Catholic (LB, 6-3, 205)
College: Michigan
Sullivan was a relative unknown before last season. But after an excellent season, he opened eyes of many major colleges and his recruiting took off in January. He has the body frame to put on much more weight and muscle, but is extremely athletic. He could play a number of positions in college. Chose Michigan over Notre Dame, Stanford, Duke and Wisconsin.
3. Pete Gonzalez, Central Catholic (WR, 6-3, 200)
College: Penn State
Gonzalez recovered from a torn ACL in the winter of his sophomore year and became one of the top receivers in the WPIAL last year. Has good size, but also speed to get open deep. With an experienced QB (Payton Wehner), Gonzalez could have a big season. He chose Penn State over Virginia Tech and Miami.
4. Ryan Cory, Pine-Richland (OL, 6-4, 290)
College: Wisconsin
He has added a few inches and 60 pounds since he was a freshman. A versatile lineman who plays offensive guard and defensive tackle for Pine-Richland, Wisconsin recruited him as a center. Pitt and Vanderbilt were his final two schools.
5. Anthony Speca, Central Catholic (QB 6-3, 215)
College: Penn State
Speca has been a starter since his freshman year when he was the leading tackler. A few injuries have hampered him the past two seasons. He took off 10-15 pounds since last season and improved his speed. Pitt, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Michigan were among schools that offered before he committed to Penn State.
6. Cam Lindsey, Aliquippa (LB, 6-2, 205)
College: Pitt
A hard-hitting linebacker who was Aliquippa’s second-leading tackler last year. He’s a good athlete who was an all-WPIAL basketball player. He chose Pitt over Penn State, West Virginia and Cincinnati.
7. Julian Dugger, Penn Hills (QB, 6-3, 195)
College: Pitt
He has been Penn Hills’ starting quarterback since his sophomore year. A dual-threat QB who is extremely athletic. He was recruited by Pitt as a QB but could play a number of positions in future because of his size and athleticism.
8. Jason Cross, Bishop Canevin (DB, 6-2, 180)
College: West Virginia
Cross is a most versatile player, evidenced by his positions at Bishop Canevin. He split time at QB past two years but will play strictly receiver this year. The future position, though, is DB. He had number of scholarship offers but chose WVU over Michigan State and Syracuse.
9. Clinton Robinson, Keystone Oaks (DB, 6-2, 195)
College: Syracuse
Robinson is another versatile player. On offense at Keystone Oaks, he has mostly been a receiver, catching 43 passes last year, but he will play QB this year. He was recruited by Syracuse to play DB. WVU and MAC schools also offered.
10. Ty Yuhas, Central Catholic (DL, 6-3, 265)
College: Pitt
Central Catholic coach Ryan Lehmeier says Yuhas reminds him of Sean FitzSimmons, former Post-Gazette Player of the Year who is now defensive lineman at Pitt. Yuhas also is committed to Pitt. He only had two offers when he committed in early February, but more offers likely would’ve come his way.
