Pompeani,

I've said it on this board every spring since I joined: The Pirates do not want to win because it is too expensive and the owners are in it for a profit. But winning will only ever be a product of a fluke of circumstances and not because it's an organizational goal. If you don't have a big enough data set to understand that by now, you just would rather not care and that's fine. Just don't get mad when nobody else thinks it's worth the effort to invest in an owner that pretends to be running a professional baseball franchise.

They gave Cutch away. They ended up getting a couple minor leaguers in return.

Nutting never capitalized a few years back when we had a chance to win it all. I cannot stand that guy.
While it is true that the Bucs didn't capitalize a few years ago, and I can critique them for that, the idea that they gave Cutch away is just wrong. Cutch has limited value now, they likely got the best offer they could get. Cutch has a combined 1.9 WAR over the last 2 years, with negative WAR in 2016, and a solid offensive WAR last year (put him around 117th in baseball), but a huge negative in the field. I will miss him, and continue to hope for his success, but he is 2 years removed from stardom now, and players seldom bounce back from that. His decline has already begun and if anything the pirates waited too long to move him.

Houston actually knew what to do with him. The pirates take a cookie cutter approach to pitchers. Every guy has the same approach. Throw a ton of fastballs. Houston has him throw his best pitch, his slider, more than he ever did in the 'Burgh. I have no doubt that Cole will have the best season of his career now that he is playing for an organization that maximizes the talent they have. Same thing happened with Charlie Morton.
I think Cole will probably blossom with another organization, but I also expect a surgery and more DL time. The pirates have been cautious with certain pitchers, trying to get the to throw their heaviest fastball down in the zone. This is the approach that helped them win, but also that helped their starting pitchers stay mostly pretty healthy. If cole moves to throwing the slider more I think he will get better results, but the league will catch on, the elbow will get strained, and his success will be short lived. The unfortunate thing is that he throws 98 and can't get it past anyone because it is straight and his command isnt great.

Right to all those things, the Pirates might only win 60 games this year, but don't write them off just because of what they did a few years ago

You’re acting as if that’s a one off. There’s quite a history in the last 25 years - it isn’t like people are pessimistic for no reason.

I guess some people live their whole lives as pessimists, I refuse to, I'm looking forward to the Bucs having a better year then most of the so called fans do, and if they don't, then there's next year, I look forward not back

The reality is the Pirates had a window to win the World Series, he was too cheap to invest in good players to get them over the hump, and now that window is closed.

Yup, the reality is that if they win 90 games and get a wild card this year, fans should still boycott games, because that's a failure! Because when they had the window they should of loaded up with talent by $pending big buck$ and be winning 100 this year with big name players, so screw this 90 win WC team if that happens.

Are you the same person talking on the hoops board about celebrating a CBI championship?

Even if they win and are in the race in August, people should not go to the games! Because even if they go 90-72 and get a wild card, that's a FAILURE of management, that's because they are CHEAP, because after winning 98 games in 2015, they should $PENT BIG at the window of opportunity and loaded with TALENT now and be challenging for 100 wins. I'd advocate staying away from games now, even if they do good to protest not spending when the opportunity was there to make a run.

I'm dumbfounded by how stupid this post is. Spending money is always the answer for Pirates (non)fans, and if they don't, boycott. But wait, they're winning...nope, not real. BOYCOTT!

is an idiot, on 6:00 news said pirates are off to a 4 - 0 start but don't get your hopes up because they were 4 - 0 two years ago and still lost 83 games, he is some Pittsburgh sports guy and he is very arrogant, a legend in his own mind, he is very optimistic about the Bucs, sure he is
How is this not OT??? lol

You as a sub human are moronic. I'm not giving them credit for being LUCKY! When they won 98 games, that winter they should have resigned EVERYONE at whatever cost and then ADDED MORE, LOSE MONEY for a couple years if need be, Nutting has BILLION$ in his newspaper interests, he'll survive.

Guess what idiot, all the owners are millionaires, if not all, then the the majority, you probably despise all professional team owners, you should tell them off take your ball and go home. Go Bucs

Yes/
Because we know one thing for certain -
If you have a good year-
Keeping the same roster and spending more, yields better results .
It’s why good teams just get better and better year after year until they are dominant annually in sports!

Are you a child ?

I don't despise them, but I also don't ROOT FOR THEIR WALLET!

LOL! Go stand in front of PNC Bank and scream "Go Nutting's Bank Account".... that's what you're doing rooting for the current Pirates team MORON.

You're an idiot, yes, the Yankees always let the good players walk after a good year. Pirates had one chance after 2015 to bulk up the roster and take a real shot and they blew it to protect Nutting's wallet.
