Question on 5A/6A Finals?

You do realize that there are requirements (capacity, lighting, etc) laid out by the WPIAL that have to be met in order to host these games right? And interested districts submit a bid to be considered? The WPIAL has to pay to rent the venue, they don't just show up one Friday and play. So yeah, you have no clue how any of this works.

This is because the WPIAL is run by PSAC gym teachers. There's no national HS football requirement that they meet certain guidelines. They came up with them themselves at the bar. If they insist on playing the 5A and 6A finals at a HS, they could very easily schedule that game 7 days prior in Allegheny County. Of course, they'd need a list of schools ahead of time willing to accept their rent money. For example, it was widely known since August that it was going to be CC vs NA. They could have asked NH if they wanted to host if its those teams. NH wouldn't have turned down the revenue.

This is a classic thread. LOL

SMF is up in arms because a game is being held in Norwin. It's essentially the same drive for PR, Peters, PCC, and NA. It ended up perfect. No benefit to anyone by playing closer to their fans.

the basic premise is, no one wants to go to westmoreland county if they dont have too. its a PIA for 3/4's of wpial fans, probably more.

Its the same distance to State College from all those schools also but you dont schedule games in another county, far from all the schools just so one school doesn't get to play closer to the venue than another school. Again, Moon was fairly close to all 4 and there were others.

NH did turn it down. That's the point. The WPIAL solicited bids as they have to rent the stadium from the owner. This isn't the Turkey Bowl. They can't just show up one day. NH did not submit a bid.

Why are you so bent out of shape about it? It's a 50 minute ride. Nobody cares if it's 10 minutes closer at Moon other than you.

I actually have skin in the game with family members attending the game, and I can tell you nobody cares.

The funny thing is that earlier this season he argued that schools should have no problem playing regular season games 2-1/2 or 3 hours away, but now he thinks that someone driving 50 minutes for a playoff game is just a bridge too far.

By the way, when they originally picked Norwin to host some of the championship games they only had a total of three bids. Norwin, North Allegheny and Geneva College.

Maybe more schools put in a bid the last time, but it's not like lots of schools wanted to host the games. And if those were your three choices and you didn't want to schedule a game for someone to possibly get a home game, well, that makes Norwin the clear and obvious choice.

Sorry boys and girls. I can’t grasp the concern over WPIAL travel.
I grew up in District 10, where our closest away games in every sport were about an hour by bus. Trips of 2+ hours to a game were the norm. That’s where we lived, so we never gave it a second thought. We did homework on the bus to the game, then ate some food and took a nap on the way home.
So I get a chuckle when I read a 45 minute trip described as “long.”

Because its common sense. Its not that th extra 30 minutes is extreme. Its just stupid and unnecessary

No need for a "bid." Its a one-off playoff game. Schedule it somewhere on 7 days notice. If no one wants the revenue, play it in Westmoreland County or Fayette County or Wheeling.

Anyone in the WPIAL could have made a bid. Well, OK, anyone with a stadium big enough to host the game. And when they first put it up for a bid, besides Norwin they had exactly one WPIAL school make a bid.

What makes you think that schools won't make a bid months ahead of time, so that they can plan ahead for the games, but would be willing to take the game on one week or less notice? That doesn't make any sense.

Which, I suppose, is why you believe it.

Common sense would be you quitting this thread after being made a fool of once again. You're crying about extra 10 minute drives, and your solution is to have the game at schools who don't want to host it. Think about that before you post again.

So no transparency. Great plan for the PIAA/WPIAL. You should run for the board so you can make decisions behind closed doors. That won't arouse any suspicion whatsoever. Maybe if your lucky, NFHS could buy you a vacation or something in exchange for streaming rights.

“It's a tremendous facility. They always do a good job hosting games,” said Gateway athletic director Randy Rovesti, who worked at Norwin for 29 years. “You have great parking, a workable press box, a lot of seating on both sides and a good field house.”

So they were looking for parking, updated press box, bleachers on both sides, and locker rooms.

Geneva's stadium isn't balanced with small bleachers on one side, so it's out. North Allegheny has light posts in front of its seats, so it makes sense it was out. Norwin wins by default.

Because a bid isnt required. Its the gym teachers asking for certain guarantees that arent necessary so everyone says eff it, we'll just host up until the finals. There is no difference between a semi and a final.

I wonder if you understand that schools put in bids to be potentially selected for early round games too.

I guess not.

I mean you really don't think that on Saturday after Friday playoff games, or Tuesday after the bracket is picked on a Monday, that the WPIAL starts calling around schools saying, "hey, Gateway, would you be interested in hosting a playoff game on Friday night? No? OK, thanks for your time."

"Well, OK, they are out. Let's give Franklin Regional a call, see if they are interested and available."

The WPIAL knows which schools are potential hosts long before the playoffs start. Then it becomes about matching up games with venues. They aren't calling people, or waiting for people to call them, after each round of the playoffs to get venues for the following week.

And you can't really be dumb enough to think that they do.

I know all that so before the season, when you know its CC vs NA in the final, you call like NH, PR, Moon, etc and ask if they want to host a final if its CC vs NA. 5A is more balanced but you know only 5-6 teams can make it so you call around to some local venues to see if there's interest in hosting. What you dont do is ship everyone to Westmoreland County no matter what.

You say that you know all that, and yet every post you make, including this one, shows that you don't.

You can't force people who don't want to host the games to host the games. If those schools wanted to host the games they could have and would have put in a bid. And maybe they would have won. But they didn't, because they aren't interested in doing so.

Your struggle to understand really basic things can be painful at times.

19 of the 60 posts in this thread (now 61 I guess) are from smf. So roughly 1/3rd of these posts are smf repeating the same points he made in the first post over and over and over again.

Think this is pathetic? Wait another few days and he'll resume last year's endless and ignorant whining about the PIAA finals at Cumberland Valley High School...

Ah yes, the only state outside of New England to play its championship at a HS. No one is as broke as PA HS football. Cant afford TV. Cant afford a nice venue. I am surprised they can afford refs.

5 newspapers? i can name 3 in western pa off the top of my head and im not even 100% sure 1 of them is still in circulation.

what 5 newspapers are going to high school football games?
There are still a lot of small community newspapers up here that only publish a couple of times a week. It sounds ridiculous but the one paper regularly reports on what exciting things happened at the nursing home.

NFHS already does the semifinals. So, again, what would happen if CC vs NA was a semifinal at North Hills or somewhere in the same county and they just had 7 days notice? Would the extra 11:00 news sideline cameraman and a few extra reporters make it totally impossible? What is Norwin doing in their year planning for this game that an Allegheny County school couldnt do in 7 days?
Yup. Just like I said, you know nothing but will keep spewing nonsense. Go to a game and let me know.

Wow!! As anticipated ,but a week ahead of schedule. And the same old drivel. did you copy and paste from last year? How long did it take to pick from the hundred or so repetitive drivels?

Nobody likes playing championship games at HS stadiums more than you guys. PA is the only state who can't afford a college/NFL venue. I wonder why the PIAA is so broke compared to other state organizations.

How many newspapers cover the semifinals? Do you really think they needed to move the finals to Westmoreland County to accommodate 1-2 extra sportswriters from some obscure local newspaper?

Go to a game.

I went to a game this year and wanted to claw my eyes out. Left at halftime. There are few things in life less entertaining than watching 16 year old boys play football while I have to sit on a metal bleacher, a mile away because there's a stupid track around the field (another reason they shouldn't hold the PIAA Championships at Pennsyltucky HS). So, no I will not go to a game. But I am asking you how many more writers go to a championship than a semifinal? You and I both know the answer is 1 or 2.

So you're speaking about something you know nothing about and demanding I explain something to you that you're going to offhandedly dismiss because you're too arrogant to actually care to listen.

I am asking you how extra sportswriters go to the finals. You are making it sound like there are 50-100 extra writers which Allegheny County cannot accommodate. There will be 2-3 extra writers. Maybe, if that.

No matter how many times you say it, you still can't force schools that don't want to host playoff games to host playoff games. And it is obvious that the schools that you so desperately wish would have put in the bid to host the games aren't really interested.

i was hanging out with two people from peters who go to the games. neither guy really cared about driving to Norwin on saturday morning. so maybe this is a moot point..

i took my daughter to the south park playoff game last week, was at East Allegheny, not too far from norwin. wasnt the end of the world for me either making the drive.

There are actually some angry folks at the site our school is playing at tonight because there's some community theater thing going on at the school. The game is relatively minor in terms of state playoffs (our school should get crushed) but if he thinks Westmoreland county is out of the way, he'd love this place.

Obviously you can't comprehend the English language. Cut and paste is all you can do. But here's the last comment for you not to comprehend. (I know its a big word so ask aperson with more intelligence what it means). When a kid wins the championship and years go by and he tells his kids and grandkids about being a champion nobody will care where he won it, nobidy will ask where he won it. They'll just be proud for him Too bad you will never get it. I guess there was never a championship for the most stupid posts. Have a good life and try hard to develop some smarts. No need to reply. We all know you can cut and paste and not answer the posts.
