For message board purposes only (I still believe Capel is our coach next year);

6 different categories of coaches

Rick Pitino - the guaranteed winner, sellout the Pete guy but alums are afraid their degrees will be revoked and fired from their jobs because Pitt decided to take basketball seriously

Sean Miller - the hometown hero and alum but comes with baggage

Jamie Dixon - re-hire our best coach ever, who has been very bubblish at TCU

Chris Mack or Mark Turgeon - same category - fired big-time coach who seemed to be doing relatively ok where they were at

Nico Medved - high major guy

Mid-major lottery ticket: no names given. Insert your own into this category as you wish. To me, its throwing darts at a board. Maybe you get lucky or maybe you dont. I dont see a sure thing as I saw with Nate Oats.

Mine:

1. Pitino
2. Miller
3. Dixon
4. Mack/Turgeon
5. Medved
6. Lottery ticket

Might flip Medved for Mack depending on what I see in March

I thought Capel was a slam dunk hire, very disappointing to say the least. I just don't see how he gets another year yet I understand your argument.

Pitino

Huge Gap

Miller
Medved (just think of the rest he’d at least have upside, might be our Forbes)
Dixon
Lotto
Turgeon/Mack

But if I’m Heather, make Pitino and/or Beilen tell you no before you move to anyone else.

The fact that you just immediately dismiss anyone who’s not Pitino or Sean Miller is just idiotic

I didn't. I like the first 5. I dismiss MM coaches because they have large failure rates and its impossible to tell who has it and who doesn't. They will all interview well. I thought Willard was a slam dunk and wasn't impressed with Howland (though I wasn't as down on him as most Pitt fans). The bottom line is there is a 50%-75% chance your MM hero will suck. I don't like those odds.

Agree Medved would have more upside as you state but I'd prefer more of a "sure thing" in Dixon or Mack. I would be happy with Medved though but only if Pitino turned us down.

It is not worth ranking because we would only try for one of them and that is Medved!

I just don’t see how say Turgeon is any more of a guarantee than Medved. Turegon is a solid but not amazing coach who just got fired. He’s Stallings 2.0. Medved is young and has rebuilt 3 programs.

We’d all love Pitino but that’s not happening. I’m torn on Belien. Sean Miller is a shitty coach and he wouldn’t recruit well here especially after throwing Book under the bus.

It’s just silly how you dismiss all the MM coaches just saying “they are lottery tickets”. It’s so lazy and such a generalization.

Medved isnt a mid-major coach. I like him and he may be more of a guarantee than a guy like Turgeon.

Beilein would be a home run. You could make an argument that pound for pound, he's a Top 5 college coach so I don't think he's realistic. Plus I played a 2 on 2 game in a private session for him as he was recruiting a teammate when he was at Richmond. He didn't offer me though.

I am not impressed with this group of MM's. Every once in awhile you see a guarantee like an Oats or a Pearl when he was at UWM but I dont see any of that. A lot of those guys could be good coaches. But I'd guess 50%-75% will fail. Major, major risk

I like DeVries a lot too Ive been watching some of his teams

I like Ben Jacobson more. I KNOW Ben Jacobson in that I've seen him coach for years and he is steady but not spectacular at UNI. He is an excellent coach. However, similar to Brad Brownell, who I believe is an excellent coach, I would worry about his recruiting. If he would hire a big-time recruiter, I'd take Jacobson in a heartbeat.

Question.
The last part in your 1st sentence "I still believe Capel is our coach next year"
Please explain this in further detail. Why? If you are just posting that to get people fired up, then ok, but other than his buyout, give us 1 good reason for him to come back?

The team is getting blown out at home by teams like The Citadel, have looked like crap against conference opponents, NO RECRUITS coming in next year, you can't even guarantee this years players will come back AND the team just isn't very good. What will 1 more year do? Like it or not, you have almost reached the bottom and instead of becoming an even bigger laughingstock next year you cut your losses and try to find someone to rebuild.

Do us a favor. If you still believe that Capel is the coach next year, then don't ask us to give an opinion on ranking his replacements.

1. Buyout
2. Heather having to "realize" a huge mistake putting her "on the clock"
3. Return 4 starters (possibly)
4. No guarantee we will get a better coach (because I dont think we hire anyone besides the lotto guy)

1. I asked you not to include buyout. BTW how much are they losing with only 1,000 fans at the games?

2. 1 more year won't make things better

3. Return 4 starters (no guarantee) They can go 8-15 with them, so just because they come back doesn't mean they will be any better.

4. Ok so you are saying they may not get a better coach, how much worse can things go? There has already been infighting among players in the past, guys getting in trouble this year, and yes I know it isn't Capels fault, and questionable coaching.

If we win tomorrow, are we going to have to rank six potential transfers? I assume we'll only be "a few pieces away" at that point.

Return 4 starters!? Who cares! They’re all bad! You don’t wanna go through “another rebuild” with a “lotto ticket”. We haven’t been through a build yet!

I’ll give myself 2 demerits for being wrong on 2 players.

Burton is a solid league average guard that would come off the bench for scoring at any winner. Can’t shoot 3’s so will never be efficient enough to be a top guard but he’s not bad.

Collier - really expected some development based on his prep game/athleticism but he seems like he never will develop.

Hugley - should’ve went to Dayton, averaged 18/10 absolutely murdered on minimal shots and usage. Could’ve named his spot for his last few years.

Femi - same. Would’ve murdered at UMass and chosen his spot last few years

these two now have had every hole in their game identified and magnified which wouldn’t have had at a lower level.

all the rest of the players have been discussed ad nauseum. Horton, Jeffress, Max, Payton, oladapo, etc simply not good enough to even be contributing.

This will be the problem for Pitt moving forward unless they find someone adept at navigating transfer portal/ has great relationships/ is a program builder. Most people are going to realize it’s better to go low/mid early (unless elite and can contribute at the best schools) kill then choose your destination. It won’t be for a few years until the elite schools really catch into this. Then Pitt can begin to really recruit prep players again. Pitt is in for a difficult road ahead.

I never understood why Capel was considered a slam-dunk hire.

Failed at Oklahoma. Sat next to Coach K for seven years and played at Duke makes him a hot commodity?

Grew up in North Carolina so that makes him some recruiting machine?

This guy cannot be dismissed fast enough.

We aren't going to draw any more fans next year with a lotto ticket and a terrible team full of cast-offs. 2022-23 attendance isnt a factor. We are also still in a pandemic and the next strain may kill us all. We dont know. But we do know attendance is going to be BAD.

This thing about Heather firing Capel and “her clock” is seriously idiotic stuff. You don’t think she’s being judged currently every time we go out and lose by 15 in front of 1000 people???? And another year of it will just make her look worse. That point makes absolutely 0 sense. If anything, how it affects her and her resume will be a reason she DOES fire him this year so she can correct it ASAP.

1 more year with Capel does 2 things:

1. Saves $3 million. Attendance is going to be terrible with a lotto ticket anyway so this cost savings is significant.

2. Buys her 1 year from her clock being started. Her job is totally safe until her 2nd bball hire fails. Delaying the firing gives her another year.

Your top 3 are absolute nonsense
Per usual

Dixon wouldn’t be an option. He’s moved on and TCU is his new home. Miller would be a great hire except I think he sees Pitt as below him. Pitino would be an instant turnaround. But he has too much baggage. But he could do really well.

Miller wouldn’t be a good hire. He lost his right hand man in Book and is damaged goods.

YOUR SECOND POINT MAKES 0 SENSE. STOP MAKING IT. SAYING IT 1000X DOESNT MAKE IT ANY LESS TRUE. AS A MAJOR D1 AD YOU ARE JUDGED EVERY DAY, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE BBALL PROGRAM IS THE WORST IN THE P6…

You don’t think it will reflect poorly on her if he has to come back because of HER extension???? If anything, her being able to navigate us out of this this year would be HUGE.

But you know all that, you’re just taking that side and making dumb points for whatever reason.

I too like Ben Jacobsen a lot. Solid, fundamental teams. Develops players. However, like you said can he recruit on an ACC level?

There is a good chance the Millers will be coaching in the ACC next year…. At NC State

Kevin Keatts is terrible. Great recruiter though. Archie at NC State??? Hmmmm.

Wasn't Keatts a lotto ticket? I thought those guys were guarantees? You mean they fail too? Hilarious that you guys think PITT, of all teams, is going to hit on a lottery ticket
