Keep Capel

Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like Pitt needs someone like Pitino to pull this program back from the dead. I know it will never happen but we really need a jolt and an instant shot of adrenaline or this program might never recover.

I'm not in love with his questionable reputation. But he would win and bring excitement back to the program.
Holy ghost! Look who's back! Haven't seen you on these boards in awhile.

Why does the reputation of a basketball coach matter at all? Like honestly, lets say he murdered someone and went to jail for 20 years but is now free. Why would that disqualify him from coaching a mediocre D1 college basketball team. Its freaking basketball. Basketball. Who cares?

Getting in-home visits might be a problem. Just a thought.

Do you honestly believe the fact that Pitino paid players (which is legal now) and an assistant coach of his hired strippers 10 years ago would be THE deciding factor for a player? NOBODY cares about that sh!t

I was suggesting that in our current situation maybe it shouldn't matter.

Where it can be a problem is in future violations that can hamstring your program. And who wants to see a conference or even national championship get vacated after the fact?? And yes the reputation of a college program is important to. It's my alma mater and I'd rather like to avoid a huge scandal that taints the reputation of the university, program, or any success we might have while he is here.

Now that being said I would like to be competitive. And if Pitino can stay out of trouble and be compliant it would be awesome to bring him in and let him bring the program back from the ashes.

I thought I read something about 20 years jail time for murder.
Yea, honestly if Will Wade went jail for 20 years for murdering someone and came out a "reformed man," I really don't think he'd have trouble getting in-home visits.

Once his show-cause is up, I'd be all-over Book Richardson as an assistant or even HC at a MM. Doing time gives him even more credibility.

I would love nothing more than for Pitt to have a National Championship vacated. Are you kidding? If you told me that Pitt basketball was going to win a NC but it would be vacated 5-10 years later, is there ANYONE on this board who wouldn't sign up for that?

I think you need a new hobby.

How does doing time make you more credible as a leader of young men?

Iona is doing pretty well since Pitino took over, I’m pretty sure he’s not struggling with in home recruiting. One of the greatest coaches of all time

Pitino has never done time or even had a show cause.

NCAA has never made anything really bad stick to him.

You act like just because of a coach with a checker passed would guarantee to have a national championship revoked. the NCAA is more corrupt than any coach has ever been

I mean the chances Pitino would get in any trouble here are almost 0. For one, you can literally pay players now.

I wouldn't want to watch us win a National Championship and then have it vacated. Especially since it would be our first of the tourney era

The only Difference between you and Forest Gump, he can run fast..

You have to be the Biggest Idiot on Rivals, not just the Lair. The Whole ****ing Rivals Network..

OK, Goldbergfan, so I take it you believe that in the 5 years Pitino would coach Pitt, even though paying players is legal now, you believe he would 100% land Pitt on a dreaded 1 year NCAAT ban (sanctions other than an NCAAT ban dont matter).

I know it’s probably not happening but he coached for more than 30yrs and got in trouble once, he’s not the anti-christ

It would be 10 years later. That wouldn’t be worth the joy and jubilation. Maybe you would have gone and gotten pictures, videos, partied all night after like a college kid. That wouldn’t be worth it because the NCAA rules that they cant count the championship? Do you think Louisville fans would have rather not won their NC? They won it and everyone knows them as the champs that year. Heck, ACCN even mentioned Russ Smith getting his jersey retired this week as a member of their NC team.....but they had it vacated so why did ACCN say that?

I saw an interview (Andrew Stockey?) where Capel basically said he knew very little about Pitt basketball or Pitt in general when hired. 'Facilities, recruiting, infrastructure'. Almost nothing. Explains alot for me why its still in year 1.
Calling BS. Not on the post. Capel

Not to mention the following years after a championship - consistently better recruiting, tix sales, etc. The program would be better off and able to absorb a vacated championship down the road. Let’s get this done!

Sorry guys, I've done a 180. Barring something like an 0 or 1 win ACC season (and I dont see that), I want Pitt to save the $3 million in buyout money and see what Capel can do with Hugley, Femi, Burton, Horton, and Sibande. Those are 5 legit ACC players. I know, its only 5 but if he can return all those guys and maybe land a key FR who decommitted after a coaching change and/or 1-2 quality transfers, I actually believe we can be an NCAAT team next year. At the risk of sounding like RutgersAl, hear me out:

First of all, I would not predict the NCAAT but saying that if he can return all those guys and they all improve (with 1-2 making that "great leap forward," we would have a core of players just as talented as most of the rest of the weak league we play in). He needs to add a few pieces but if he can return those guys, I want him to have one more chance to see what they can do. I would much prefer that to the flavor of the month mid-major lottery ticket who will have to bring in 12 transfers to go 2-18. We can get that guy AFTER next season and save $3 million.

Hugley is going to be big-time. Femi and Burton could develop into a higher-end ACc guard tandem and Horton and Sibande can score. We wouldn't have depth and would need a 4 but that team has A CHANCE. I cant do a 4th total rebuild in 6 years. Give Capel next season and if it sucks, you saved $3 million and then you get your CAA coach and 12 transfers in March 2023.

Caveats

- Hugley transfers: Capel has to go

- Hugley stays but he loses 2 of the other 4: maybe has to go if he cant replace them

- if you can guarantee a better coach now (Pitino, Buzz, etc), you go get him now

- If this ACC season ends up disastrous, he's got to go
A potential problem is that you need to make a decision on Capel before you find out if anyone transfers out

Look it's an interesting point. You are making me think twice about it. I was talking about this with a few friends who are Villanova alumni. They were like in today's current climate of NIL does any of that even really even matter anymore? I was surprised they felt that way and they thought the idea of getting Pitino was a great one for Pitt

No you dont. People transfer a few days after the season. Its not like they have to decide on extending him. If Hugley and others transfer 2 weeks after the season, you fire him then.

The only way Capel comes back is if he returns the good players

Has nothing to do with it.
