Cook article about Pitt's woes on the front page of the sports section. Short comment about Louisville vacating the national championship on the last page in the morning briefing. Is it any wonder that schools cheat? I think Stallings got almost as much bad publicity for calling Louisville cheaters as Louisville got for actually cheating.

I'm not expecting much from the FBI investigation, either. Rightly or wrongly, they have enough public image problems of their own right now. I'm not sure how much of a taste they'll have for damaging some of college basketball's favorite teams and coaches with what else they have going on currently.

I'm rapidly losing interest in college hoops.

It just goes to show that it is silly to be holier than thou. What do you lose if you get caught? Some banners? The fans still remember those wins. It is an unbelievably hollow penalty.

Time and time again, it pays to cheat in college sports. When you get caught, it's a slap on the wrist then you are back to winning soon afterwards. Why not cheat? Nothing of great consequence is going to happen.

As for the Cook article... is he actually blaming the fans for being upset over the hire, and then having the nerve not to show up when the team is winless? Please. It was the worst possible choice when Barnes tagged Stallings. They might not have gotten Miller, but anybody would have been better.

The retroactive penalties are almost universally panned. They remind me of Stalin air brushing Trotsky out of pictures of the Russian revolution. We all know what happened.

That said I am holding out some small amount of hope that the penalties going forward from the FBI investigation will be more significant because the NCAA has been so battered by public criticism. Before you jump on me, remember I said a "small amount" of hope.

To be clear, I have no delusions about how big-time college sports works. I just feel like going to watch a high school game because it would feel like a breath of clean air.

Agree on everything you stated.

Yea and we got none to lose
Pitt will never win a championship in either FB or BB. The deck is too stacked against it. If we ever do, it will be totally luck. BB does have more of a luck component to it, so if we were to luck into one some day, it would likely be hoops. Football, never.

The only body that has subpoena power is the FBI. The NCAA is powerless. L'ville's "punishment" was from the NCAA. It means little except to maybe the L'ville fans, coaches and players. In effect, they won a bunch of games and an NC with paid professionals. Hopefully, the FBI does its job and convicts a bunch of these sleazeballs and fines them and puts the major offenders in jail.
