juggernaut right now. They are dismantling the Connor McDavid and the Oilers just like they did to the Pens yesterday. Both franchises rose with Sid and Ovy, have both guys, but the Caps made some really smart trades and draft picks and have retooled completely on the fly and now are a cup contender again.

I think Rutherford left them too hamstrung by the poor trades and so little draft capital remaining. It doesn’t help that he shipped out a few younger guys Darren Sprong, who could’ve brought some much-needed speed to the lineup.

They also needed their new prospects (Poulin, Hallander, etc) to contribute at the NHL like the ‘Baby Pens’ did in 2015-16, and that just hasn’t happened. Thus, you get the result we see right now.

Props to Washington for giving Ovi a chance to contend this late into his career.

They made poor choices in drafting. Even worse with Mike Sullivan holding young guys back because of how afraid he is of young guys making mistakes. They need a bunch of draft picks and cap relief

I hate to say this but it would not be the worst thing for the NHL if the Caps would make a run to the Finals. Good hockey market, big market, superstar......you put the Caps against say the Oilers and McDavid you can also have this whole USA/Canada phenomenon going along with Ovy/McDavid.

Well.......that's exactly what Dubas has been doing.

Check this out. They will have 15 draft picks in the first 3 rds the next 3 years.......and likely they will get more as they move out assets like Rackell and maybe a Karlsson.

Does Karlsson have much value? I’d think just finding someone to take his contract would be a huge W. Nevermind any return.

The dream would be to land Misa, McKenna, and or DuPont in the next three draft classes.

And if you take a look at Dubas’ draft history in Toronto, he’s pretty solid at identifying talent. I hope we can infuse the team with enough young talent to go on one last run with Crosby/Malkin in 2-3 years, but that may be too optimistic at this point. Even we had to wait a few years after Crosby and Lemieux played together.

Yeah. That is the Holiest of Holy Grails. Not one of those guys might be Sid or Mario, but they are essentially Cale Makar (Dupont) Misa is a Matthews and McKenna is a Kucherov. I'll take that.

They have done a great job, but they also got the advantage of having two older, past their prime, well paid players have career ending injuries that allowed the Caps to put them on LTIR and not have to account for their salaries in their decline phase. The Penguins haven't had that sort of luck.

I know of a guy…

It’s funny how at the international tournament he looked like himself again. I think the only reason why he looks the way he looks here is because we don’t have the young guys to complement his playing style. Getting an Erik Karllson would’ve been something that would’ve helped us four years ago, but not now. I do see him getting a lot of prospects and I want them to actually do a full tank job, but they won’t do it.

I would just be happy if they dropped it in the top five if not, the top three not even just for the first round pick before the second round picks. Then you can build up your prospect pool within 2 to 3 years as opposed to 5 to 6. I will trade away all the assets that keep us a mediocre team and just let us lose.. Sid will just have to get over it.

No one will care about Ovi. If he was so good, why wasn’t he scoring goals at four nations. That’s right, because the NHL cant market.

Russia has been banned from international sports for 3 years
Not just hockey and the NHL.

Seriously, what would have happened if the NHL said "this isn't a true international competition because it isn't open to the entire world, so due to that technicality we are letting Russia participate"? Our president seems to be on friendly terms with their president and I doubt he would have done anything.

Karlsson is one of those guys much more valuable to a good team. His last few seasons have been with the Sharks and Pens.
Agreed, I think a Cup contender would greatly appreciate his services. Not only did he seem to always “rise to the occasion” come playoff time, but I think he’s finally figured out how to play with a team like ours.

He went from being the primary offensive creator in Ottawa and San Jose to being on a team with two of the best NHLers the past 20 years. IMO, it was less us adjusting to him and more him adjusting to the Pens. I think prior to the 4 Nations break, it looked like a complete 180 from the first few months of the season.

I say try to trade him to a contender now. And let's end this Malkin crap after this season. At his pay rate he should have been gone 3 or 4 years ago. This team would be way better off with the couple of young players we could have gotten for him.

Malkin’s full No Trade Clause aside, does his AAV really matter at this point? It’s not like they’re contending and his cap hit is preventing them from making any moves.

The best return we could’ve gotten for him would’ve been 5-6 years ago when it was speculated that Florida offered Barkov and Trocheck (not sure I buy that anyways). At this point, with his age and potential return, I think it’s best to do right by a franchise legend and let him retire with Crosby on his own terms.

Here's Gavin McKenna from the other night.
