** There’s nothing wrong with a little lineup tinkering!

** In his last four games before today, Fede has managed just 14 points, and Zach has offered just 12. Today, the pair combined for 20 coming in as understudies.

** So maybe this way is better for both. More importantly, maybe it’s a better move for our Panthers.

** Early on, it may not have looked that way. With just 6 minutes to go, the Panthers clung to just a 3 point lead. And to that point, starters Will and GDG, nor their bench counterparts, or actually anyone not named Blake, was making much of an impact on the offensive end.

** Of course, the Panthers’ got things going after that. And they outscored their far inferior foe 61-32 in the final 26 minutes of the game.

** 12 of those final 61 points were scored by Zach Austin. Actually, all 12 came in the second half when he was probably the best Panther player. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, this is kind of performance the Panthers need from Zach if they are looking to chart a path to the NCAA Tournament.

** The second half performance from Zach included a soaring one handed slam on the fast break. On the replay, you could see Blake mouth the words “Damm!”

** Zach played well enough, in fact, to earn himself an interview on the post game show, where he proclaimed quite sincerely that he doesn’t care if he starts, and that he just wants to win.

** In the same interview, he was asked what it’s like guarding Blake in practice. With a pause, I recall his one word description to be “terrible.”

** Jaland Lowe’s performance today could have also earned him an interview on the post game show. For the first game this season, he outperformed his freshman backcourt mate. What can be said about this game is that Jaland ran the show much more effectively than Bub, who just seemed a little “off” all day on the offensive end.

** It’s hard to know exactly what coming off the bench did for Fede. It wasn’t exactly a breakout half for him in the second 20 minutes either like it was for Zach. But his second half minutes were his best we have seen from the Fin is several games.

** I also liked watching Fede sink his final two foul shots, because it’s going to be a problem for our Panthers if he continues to shoot 40% from the foul line like he was coming into today.

** Fede and GDG combined for 15 points and 13 rebounds, which is certainly the kind of production needed from the five spot, regardless of who starts. The question will be if they can offer close to these kinds of numbers against an opponent with any kind of talented bigs. The Bulldogs most certainly did not.

** Otherwise, it’s likely noteworthy to suggest that Blake Hinson played his most “efficient” offensive minutes of the year. We’ve used many adjectives to describe Blake’s wonderful play this year, but efficient is rarely part a part of the vocabulary.

** It’s also noteworthy that with his 3-4 performance from three today, Blake’s 3pt Field Goal percentage has inched up to 47.9%. That’s ridiculous.

** Finally, Capel’s use of the 1-2-2 (or 3-2 if you will) in the later stages of the game shows that he’s at least wondering if this should be a regular part of his arsenal. It’s certainly an interesting option with 6-11 Jorge’s long arms guarding the perimeter at the top of the key.

** This 36 point win was against a foe ranked 343 according to Pomeroy, while our Panther’s ranking has inched up to 42. On Wednesday, our foe will be almost 200 spots better. This should make for a much better tune up going into the Holiday break.

** Hopefully, the impact of our lineup tinkering will allow for a stronger start and continued improvement from just about everyone.

I posted earlier how well I thought Jaland played today.
He was in total control running the offense, beating the
zone presses thrown at him, running the break, and making
the right pass whether in transition or in the half court
offense. He's taking what's there, and not forcing his own
shot as he did in the first few games. The team looked
better today when he was on the floor. He's getting his
"feet wet" now, and hopefully we'll see as much or more in
ACC play.

I agree. Jaland played like a skilled and experienced veteran. Right now, he has the skilled part down pretty well. Give him some time and he'll make veterans look up to him as their leader while he makes the country take notice. But that's just my opinion. I think he'll turn out to be one of those Pitt guards in the mold of a Brandin Knight or Sean Miller.

Often announcers will always talk about some player or another coming off the bench and providing energy, and how important that is. Well if it actually is important, Austin is certainly the guy to bring that energy for Pitt. He was almost jumping out of the building, and flying end to end on offense AND on defense.

Lowe should start playing 20 minutes every game. If that means a little less for Bub, I am fine with it. Jaland ran the offense much better than Bub has at any time this year.

Yeah and Bub has been playing a lot of minutes. Some games he plays like 38 minutes. He could use more breaks.

I agree. I think Lowe should start and play at least 20 min. a game, but I'm a huge Lowe fan.

Team is not as far along at this point as hoped and the primary reasons are the play of Austin and Fede. Jeffress is a high effort guy but having to play him more than 8-10 minutes a game is a problem because the team around him doesn’t have enough offense. The lack of scoring up front and lack of physicality inside is likely to be a problem for this team all year.

There seems to be a correlation between when our team doesn't rebound well and the lack of offense. I know this correlation is obvious, but I think it bears repeating that rebounding and defense lead to better offense. Look at our results in the first half yesterday vs. how we rebounded better in the second half and the results. This is why with his defense and rebounding, Jeffress is so vital.

The first 16 minutes were a bit ruff to watch and to be honest the difference in talent made this a tough game to watch . Coming off a break maybe that was a good thing .

Jaland is getting better every game .

This team needs both Zack and Fede‘s play to improve if it’s to do any damage in the conference and make it to the dance .

Nice to see them scoring 86 with Bub having an off night .

Hueitts not afraid to let it fly !

Far and away the best result of the Pgh teams yesterday !

Lowe is going to be a really good player here and he will be a great team leader in time. He is going to compliment Brandin Cummings extremely well with how the 2 will play together and feed off one another in the offense. Brandin Cummings has been on fire for Lincoln Park and if you don't know this yet, he is extremely dangerous shooting the ball from both midrange and from 3 point range. He is playing in a major high school basketball Christmas tournament right now and his team rolled last night led by Cummings outside firepower. I will double down on this again, he is the most underrated player in the 2024 recruiting class which is the same thing I said in regard to Carrington and last years class. Expect instant impact next year from Cummings. Getting back to Lowe, I thought yesterday was by far his best game as a Panther.

When I think about the future, obviously there is uncertainty with Carrington. As of now I think he is going to return next year, but I can't say for certain how high he could be on a draft board depending on how the season ends. I doubt Bub leaves unless he is getting a slot at least in the first round which he is capable of earning in time. I do think he has lottery potential, but he may need another 2 years to get there. Bub should remain patient. Cam Johnson was patient, and he got drafted 11th as a 5th year senior. This team in the future imo would be much better served if Jaland continues to improve and be consistent enough to run the point full time and Bub moves off the ball a lot more where he can focus more on his shooting and less on playmaking.

Regardless of Bub, we need future shot blockers and quality team rebounding from the bigs down low. Papa Kante is going to be a huge lift next year imho. But the development of Guillermo is pretty key. Guillermo has been pretty good lately since his flu issues and that needs to continue into ACC play. I think Guillermo needs to take considerably more shots in our offense, and obviously his rebounding is a big key this year and moving forward.

Amdy Ndiaye could be a huge piece in time because he has a ton of potential with his height, length, and athletic ability to play above the rim. He has put up some real nice performances lately and has shown better consistency since Thanksgiving including a 16 / 11 performance against the #4 team in the country in prep basketball just a few days ago. Im not going to guess how quickly he can further develop, but our team in the future really could use his skillset if he can take his game to another level. With a Lowe / Cummings backcourt, we are going to need bigs that can shot block and rebound to get our transition offense going.

As my hope for Fede dwindles and Guillermo is getting some run at the 4 right now, I think we need to look for another center that can rebound in the portal this offseason. My preference is for a physical wide body that puts severe emphasis on rebounding over a finesse player that is thin that can shoot. I do think at some point in time Lowe will be much more aggressive driving the ball a lot more, so another outside shooter would also be a welcome addition to potentially next years team. Barnes will be fine on defense next year and could be an outstanding college defender, but just making some open 3's which he has done in the past could also be a nice lift on next years team. It took Nate Santos until his 3rd year to get his 3 point shot rolling in college, so Im not going to guess whether Barnes will provide that next year, although he is capable of making 3s. I think Kante will be the best defender on next years team and the top rebounder by % on next years team.

My current recruiting preference looks like this

This offseason- Wide Body center, 3 point specialist at wing (Greg Elliot type is just fine)

2025- Thomas, Dixon, Bundalo

thanks for the thoughts Vader, love reading your stuff. I love where the Pitt program is right now, I think Capel has it going. totally agree we need a wide body big for next year, that can score inside. Love the progress out of Guellermo this year. He and his brother are both improving. they led the fast break a couple times yesterday ! Lowe/Carrington. wow. man, they need to stick at Pitt 3 more years. they are interchangable at the point, both unselfish. Respect your opinion on Brandin Cummings. Looking forward to seeing him play. Papa Kante could have been big this year. I hope he is 100% by next year. what I love about the program right now, is we seem to have really good, unselfish kids that really like each other, playing together. Capel got some talent in his first few years, but had some bad apples. I think he has really focused on making sure we are getting good kids first, but that is also helping him draw talent. Hinson is a real leader.

Guillermo probably could play some four, might even be better playing the four, but he didn't play one second at the four yesterday and he hasn't played more than a minute or two there all season so far.

You sure on that the last few games? Id have to check the tape, perhaps I got the twins mixed up.

There was never a time yesterday that Guillermo and Federiko were on the court at the same time. So unless you think that Hinson or Austin was playing the five while Diaz Graham was playing the four, yeah, I'm sure.

If you look at the box score (and I know, it's not necessarily a perfect way to do it), Diaz Graham played 23 minutes and Federiko played 17. One or the other, but not both of them, was on the court at any given moment.

I liked the starting line-up yesterday. Fede and Austin produced off the bench. Additionally, we didn't have to worry about Fede getting into foul trouble. I think he only had one foul for the whole game.

G Diaz just gives us so much more as a starter. I'd like to see G get the majority of minutes at center. He had a nice day rebounding too with 8 boards and several tip-outs/passes that resulted in points.

Not really the kind of opponent that would let the coach etch the line-up in stone, but I'd like to see us go with it more often.

Agree about getting the center and moving Bub off the point. He is ideal as a Brad W point forward type. Getting another center to pair with Kante and letting the twins handle the #4 would give us a tremendous size advantage. If this is the way we go, then I would say we need another guard for the backcourt (Jaland, Leggett, Cummings, new player).
