** As we all know, every college basketball season is its own journey.

** Early on, we dreamed it would be mostly just smooth sailing, But instead we found ourselves on something of a rocky road.

** Fortunately, today’s trip to the middle of the State of New York delivered us an ACC opponent that we could beat, because our journey really needed a win. And for the moment at least, we can still plan for a destination as part of March Madness.

** But until we can figure out how not to get pummeled on the defensive glass, our journey is going to end sooner that we’d like.

** This shouldn’t be considered a bounce back win for our Panthers. Instead it was one a little closer to survival.

** That isn’t to say that the Panthers didn’t do a reasonable share of good things. Most notably, for many stretches, we executed better offensively. We ran enough sets with a sense of purpose that created plenty of good looks, not to mention easy baskets and even dunks.

** It’s been a little too long since we’ve scored as many easy ones in the paint like we did today.

** This isn’t too say that we demonstrated good ball movement. But at least good enough ball movement.

** But the real difference today – and why this particular road trip ended with the much needed win instead of crushing defeat was because we took care of the basketball.

** Jaland was able to slow that game down to a better pace and avoid troublesome trips in the paint where he’d lose the ball. Ish too.

** You have to go all the way back to the opener against Radford when the two of them combined for as few as 2 turnovers. That was pretty remarkable actually for two guards who have the ball in their hands as much as they do.

** Somehow hopefully, Jaland can find his three point shot. Other than that too tough one that he needed to take at the end of a shot clock later in the second half, Jaland took good ones, but they aren’t falling. I don’t think Jaland is a good three point shooter. But he’s 3-18 in his last four games. He’s not this bad either.

** On the other hand, in those same four games, Ish is 11-19 from three.

** Another difference on the offensive end were some timely offensive rebound putbacks, most notably the two first half buckets by Jorge when the offense was reeling with the absence of Jaland from foul trouble.

** We needed every point today though because, once again, we were absolutely terrible on the defensive glass.

** Even though it’s been a weakness all year, this was worst it’s been.

** I’ll have to check the final stats, but it appears that we surrendered at least 14 second chance points. Against most teams, teams better than the Cuse, that’s a losing number.

** North Carolina is a team better than the Cuse. Our journey takes us back home in a situation where another win is much, much needed.

** But at the very least, we can finally say after five games, our journey is back in the right direction.

They had 16 second chance points on 20 offensive rebounds. We had 16 second chance points on 9 offensive rebounds.

I said it in the game thread and I'll say it again, it doesn't seem like that could even be remotely correct. It sure seemed like they were killing us in second chance points. And yet no, they actually didn't.

I understand what you are saying but giving up 16 is way too many regardless of how many you score. Fortunately we got 77 points making the most of our second chances.

This line sums up everything in a nutshell. If we don't fix the rebounding, we're not going very far even if we make the somehow still get into the NCAAT. That sequence where Syracuse got 2 rebounds, got bailed out on a late foul and finally scored 2 after 70 seconds of possessing the ball was perhaps the best example of our ineptitude this year. And while our defense has not been great generally either, when you do play tough D and get a miss, only to once again fail to corral the rebound, it has to take a lot of wind out of the sails. It does for us just watching.

So, good to have ended the streak, but we have very little margin for error now. And it's hard to believe we'll avoid a bad loss or two along the rest of the way when you are this bad at holding the other team to one shot.

16 is too many.

All I am saying is that with how poorly we did on the defensive glass I was shocked that it wasn't worse. And somehow we didn't do all that well on the offensive glass, and yet when we did get an offensive rebound we were ridiculously efficient at turning those into points.

Fortunately, we were playing 'Cuse. They're not very good. The competition gets a lot better shortly. If we don't clean up the rebounding and play stronger, more physical, smarter defense, the wins won't be happening.

We also still have to play five games against team that are about the same or even worse (in Miami and BC's case, much worse) than Syracuse is. Including Syracuse again. That's almost half of the games we have left.

And the competition doesn't actually get a lot better at any time from here. The toughest stretch of the season for us is the Duke through Clemson four game stretch. And that's in the rear view mirror now. On a neutral court, every team we have left to play is an underdog against all of Duke, Louisville and Clemson. And the only one that's close (other than obviously Louisville the second time) is Carolina.

This teams fatal flaw in roster construction is the lack of any lineup that can handle a quality offensive rebounding team.

We lost 4 points on Corhen non dunks.

It’s like a game in FB where a team has five TOS and some how magically wins the game. Just a rare occurrence. Clearly they are not going to be as fortunate if they keep doing that

I said in the game thread there is just something missing from this team. They lose focus in games so often and just lack that grit even last years team had.

They need to have some of those legendary rebounding drills you heard about when JD was here to develop that level of nastiness this team needs. Then again maybe guys like Cohern and G just are not physically capable

And many of those rebounds came with him having his off hand wrapped around or blocking out a would-be Pitt player

Lumpkin looked like a man among boys out there
This game highlighted how weak our guys are. they especially lack lower body strength. They tend to get rooted out way too often even against bigs not near as strong as Lumpkin

DT, the biggest difference I noticed today was the turnover margin. The rebounding obviously continues to be a problem for us, but in many of our other games where we rebounded poorly, we also committed a lot of turnovers and gave up too many points off of them. Tonight we didn't

Lumpkin manhandled us all game long to the tune of 23 rebounds. We shouldn't be
surprised because we're VERY weak inside. Diaz all 6'11" of him got 3 rebounds.
Corhen got 5. This is our inside strength? Unless we start playing tougher D, and
improve our rebounding I'm afraid we'll see more of what we saw today. Yes a nice
road win at the Dome, but the Cuse stinks this year. They had 11 TO's while we only had 3.
That, and our better FT #'rs really helped. Lowe once again along with Austin down the
stretch also were big reasons for this win. The rest of the ACC schedule isn't muderer's
row, but it will seem like it if we perform like today. We really need to toughen up on the
inside.

You are right about giving 16 offensive rebs, but a win, especially against Cuse, can make me quickly forget

They are not physically capable. Still, there is enough talent on the team to make the dance, which is good enough for me (as long as they make it).
Great so that's your new standard huh? If we barely make the dance you're okay with that smh. Just 2 months ago we all thought this Pitt team could be a special squad, a 2nd weekend squad in the NCAA Tournament.

7 seasons now with Jeff Capel and you and others are content with barely making the NCAA Tournament smh. So depressing.

We need to get tougher as a group and rebound as a team. We don’t have a dominant big man so everyone is going to have to do their part, otherwise we aren’t going to be playing in March.

It was still nice to win after the slow start on the road and the losing streak.

The only way to fix rebounding is to sit Corhen and that doesn't really fix it, fix it. GDG is a better rebounder but not as good of a defender. So do you go with a lineup of say,

Lowe
Leggett
Dunn
Austin
GDG

???

Corhen is playing because they like his defense and he gives them some offense. But, man is he a bad rebounder.

What Corhen needs is a summer at Parris Island, USMC training base. That's about the only thing I can feel certain would give him the toughness to be effective underneath. Some drill instructors putting the fear of the Lord in him.

Capel is criminally negligent for not playing Papa Kante more often. He's a tough dog and has talent, too. We saw that clearly vs. Ohio State and even a couple of times when Capel doles out a few minutes to the kid.

The only (2) consistently tough players on this team are Dunn and Austin. Those dudes are tough and play hard virtually all the time. I'd say Lowe and Ish are reasonably tough-minded, but they're too often knuckle heads bound and determined to do it all themselves too often. Jaylen, end of game, dribbled himself into traps along the the side line in front of the Pitt bench repeatedly. Cuse would send 2-3 guys after him... and instead of passing to any of 2-3 open teammates, he tries to dribble through the presses!!!

This is a hard team to like right now... soft and dumb are not appealing team characteristics.

Guillermo is a significantly better defender than Corhen. Corhen is Pitt’s worst defensive player every single minute that he is on the court.

"Soft an dumb" is a little much...but I agree with the rest of the above. However when a Big
like Lumpkin totally overwhelms and manhandles us inside ( 23 rebounds ), ya gotta make
some kind of change. What kind of change?.....Put Kante in, and his marching orders are simple,
keep Lumpkin off the boards! Diaz gets backed down against most Bigs he plays against, and
Corhen isn't much better in that reagard. I haven't given up on this team, but the rest of the
schedule is gonna be tough even against the weaker teams. Yesterday's performance
against a lousy Cuse team proved that.

I think Guillermo is better too, but there are guys that you simply cannot have Guilllermo defend in the post. And Lampkin is one of those kind of guys. He would have destroyed Guillermo in the post.

Yesterday would have seemed to be the perfect day to play Amadou Kante more minutes.

So be it. Pitt would have won more comfortably if Syracuse gave Lampkin more touches down low. If playing Guillermo suckers opponents into giving their big men more shots and inherently results in fewer shots for the guards and wings that almost won Syracuse the game yesterday, then that’s a net win for Pitt.

Brutal to watch it. The numbers are getting mind boggling. I’m waiting for any kind of adjustment.

I don't know. Syracuse's starting guards (Starling, Moore and Taylor) went a combined 12-30 from the field and 5-15 from three. If you throw in Cuffe's and Carlos' minutes at guard off the bench you add in another 1-7 from the field and 0-3 from three, for a total of 13-37 and 5-18.

It seems like more of that kind of crap-tacular shooting would have been a good thing for us.

There was never any reason to think this could be a special team. It's not Capel's fault that people's perception of this team were out of whack. The criticisms have been noted on here ad nauseum. They won a conference road game yesterday & still alive and well in their chase to get a NCAA Tournament bid. Just enjoy it for what it is.

Yeah Kante came in for like 1 minute, missed a basket and then was yanked and never seen again the rest of the game. Pretty bizarre.
