Thiero

I mostly agree with you but in this case, sure seemed like the overriding sentiment was that Pitt was his choice over UNC until Arky (and all their $$) came in late after not being involved at all.
Plot may differ but the results always seem to be the same….

It was weird. Thiero left Cal and there didnt seem to be any mutual interest. Indiana was even in there early. Cal may have lost out on someone and backfilled with Thiero, I dont know.

Pitt could have had him out or HS and passed . Nobody here wanted him.
Calipari took him at a blue blood .
But- sure - tell me why it’s about money and not the coach a few more times .

Capel needs to stop expending much time, resources and energy on pursuing the "highly coveted" transfers like this guy. Pitt never gets these types in the end, and that's a matter of historical fact that has preceded Capel for decades.
What time or resources was spent ?
An official visit and dinner ?
Stop it

I’ll keep saying it was about the money and not the coach until someone explains why he had decided to leave Kentucky while Cal was still there.

Let’s put it this way, his actions suggest he didn’t have anything major against Cal but $$ were more important. And then all of a sudden, it just so happened that Cal was somewhere else and offering the most $$. $$ sealed the deal, not the presence of Cal.

Correct. He wasnt big on UK or Cal but also probably wasnt unhappy. Just looking for a better opportunity, maybe a bigger role. Then John Tyson came in with $1 million or whatever and Thiero said I'll be just a role player for that cheddar and who could blame him.

Let me propose something simpler
Kentucky fans wanted cal out - and were very vocal about it .
Cal tells the team “I don’t know what my future is - explore your options “
Players enter the portal
Cal takes the Arkansas job - and reaches out to same players .
Two of those players chose Arkansas .
One chose Ohio State , one Georgetown another ball state

Two more are pending .

Simplest answer is usually right

If the coach was the prime consideration in his transfer to Arkansas, then why did he go into the portal before Cal left Kentucky… he went into the portal because he said he didn’t like how he was being used. A million bucks seems to have the effect of subordinating one’s concern over mundane issues like how one’s skills are being employed.

I don’t recall, did all the other Kentucky transfers also enter the portal while Cal was still there or not until after he was gone or rumored to be gone? I thought Thiero entered well before any rumors surfaced.

Sure, you could believe Cal gave them advance notice but I think it’s a lot easier to believe $$.

Why wouldn’t he ?
If they are in the portal they can follow him.
Rather than giving the new coach a chance to retain them .

That’s possible but still doesn’t explain Thiero’s assertion that he was misused at Kentucky and the fact that he demonstrated no interest in Arkansas, the new home of his beloved coach, until the bag if money showed up
late in the game. The true answer is usually the one explained by common sense given the circumstances and not some screwy conspiracy theory.

That’s a fair question. It’s not like the time and resources that used to be necessary to recruit a high level prospect out of HS, that’s certainly true.

But we never get the guys everyone else wants, that’s also true. And I mean never. So in that sense, one could argue that any amount of time and resources spent on recruiting Thiero as a transfer were wasted.

No. Because Cal was 100% coming back. The reason he is at Arkansas is because SMU fired their coach.

Does anyone really believe he is at Arkansas for any reason other than money? Money is the recruiter now for anyone. Listen, if Kentucky offers you 500K but BC offers you 600K, you are probably going to BC. 100K is a lot of money, especially for kids who arent guaranteed NBA players.

You never get a date with the homecoming queen if you don’t ask
Absolutely right. Same thing happens every time. Also in football with local kids.

I’m sure Jeff wasn’t putting all his eggs in one basket .

If you don’t go after quality guys you might as well give up and except being mediocre .

18% of all workers in the US make >than 100k and less than 2% make over 500k . These are life changing amounts for most kids and accepting a lower offer would be nuts . This could in all likelihood be a once in a lifetime opportunity. You just hope than some of these kids get proper financial advice.

Just one notable guy in this thread….it clearly was a cash grab.

Which is why you dont need to pay assistant coaches anymore. They are supposed to be your recruiters. Kids are going to go for the most money. Maybe if its a 25K difference or something like that, they choose the place they actually like the best.

Not thinking that the HC would agree with you .
