Thiero

Well they spent 4M in the portal and did squat

The portal is the great equalizer. Literally almost everyone enters the portal and its the guys arent good enough for the NBA so there's very little difference between the top 5 or 10 portal guys and #200-#300. Blake Hinson and Jamarius Burton wouldn't have been Top 200. Not sure Dunn would be Top 200 if they rank they many. But a guy like Dunn is not any worse than like the #20 dude.

Close to home example:

WVU got an HM All Big 12 from a really bad OK St team who is ranked liked 70th in the portal, much higher than Dunn would be ranked. But Dunn played on a 1 seed so only scored 6 PPG. Had he played on OK St and the OK St dude played on Houston, their numbers and rankings would be flipped.

247 ranks almost all transfers, dunn is 276 on their. Corhen is 170. Small from okst to wvu is ranked 9th. Their ranking are pretty bad tho. Jaeden zackery had 11/3/4 and 40% from 3 but is ranked 426. Achor achor and kasean pryor are 237 and 283. Both are probably top 50-100 players in the portal. Then you have someone like lamont butler who wasnt a top 300 transfer until he committed to kentucky and now is at 47. 247 has been very biased in their evaluations historically

Its like having to rank every player in college basketball because almost everyone is in the portal. Its an impossible task. Small from OK St being ranked 9th and Dunn 276th illustrates that. There is little to no difference between them.

Small averaged 15.1 PPG and 4.7 PPG in 33 MPG on a really bad team.

Dunn played only 17.5 MPG, so almost half of what Small played because he played on a 1 seed. And his production was almost half of what Small's was. 6.4 PPG, 2.3 RPG

So even if Small is better, it will be ever so slightly. These portal rankings are extremely random. Its incredible how many good players are left. I'm actually jealous of some of these teams with so many openings. There are many attainable players left better than Austin, Jorge, Ndiaye, Barnes, etc.

There are better, cheaper players available. So so many players out there. Lets hope we get one.

Ok, not the end of the world. A 3pt shooter would be nice, along with
a 4 who can start or at least log significant minutes. I like where we
are at this point. This year will be the third year in a row Capel has
improved the program with transfers. Let's see what he does with the
two schollies he has at his disposal,

Need more still like you said, bare minimum a starting 4 who shot making ability

I wanted Thiero. However, the fact that he was an "athlete" and not a shooter concerned me. He was the Anti-Hinson and that was a little concerning.

Nothing wrong with playing a little differently as a team. Goodness knows there is room for improvement with defense and rebounding. Do we need to lead the ACC in 3pt attempts every season? So far, all it's gotten us were two bubble teams.

We’re not sure what the cost of his services were , but Arkansas has the bank and my guess is that for what he brings to the table Pitt would be better off spending its dollars elsewhere.

NIL or no NIL nothings changed in recruiting , the big boys and any school with the biggest NIL funds at their disposal will have the pick of litter .

I’m sure that dinner put the nail in the coffin for Pitt !

The boosters were going to pay for Thiero, probably because he's local. Are they going to pay for a kid ranked #284 in the portal who may actually be a better player? It kind of seems we are tapped out and Thiero was the one guy they'd spend on beyond Dunn and Corhen.

The kid at #284 won’t be that expensive.

He followed his coach
Stop it

Not really. He entered the portal while Cal was still the coach at UK and was going to be the coach at UK until SMU fired their HC which set off the chain. Its not like he had an allegiance to Cal. He bolted on him. Arkansas paid him very well. Much more than he was going to make at Kentucky. And I dont blame the kid at all. He should go to the highest bidder. But lets not pretend he had this devotion to Calpari because he clearly did not.

Yeah, and that's weird to me. We didn't need a million dollar man. A $100,000 guy will do just fine.

Correct. This has nothing to do with following Coach C... unless we're talking about following him to the money pit.

You enter the portal to get paid , to get on the court or to change your environment . My guess is he wanted to maximize his payday . Cal might have had more flexibility at Arkansas than at Kentucky . Those elite recruits come with a pretty high sticker price .

Tyson is going to have to overpay, to an extent, at Arkansas compared to a place like Kentucky so I'd guess Thiero is making much more there than he would have made at Kentucky. $750K is my guess. I doubt we went over 5.

Didn't Arkansas give Davis $1.2M? I'm guessing Thiero got a mil. Which is absolutely insane. We're not talking about Carmello Anthony here.

$1 million for Thiero is far far too much. He's a 300K dude who we would have given 500 cause he's local

It's all too much, although basketball has so many guys in the portal that I'm surprised it doesn't bring the prices down through simple economics (well, I guess there are also more contenders and less spots to fill, so maybe I'm just stewpit or sumthin'). Football, on the other hand - I don't think guys realize how much they can make if they enter in the Spring, when teams are desperate to fill holes. Backup d-linemen are getting a couple hundred thousand and whatnot.

You’re fooling yourself if you don’t think it was all about $$, especially given that he entered the portal while Cal was still Kentucky’s coach.

I guess you figure Cal told him he was jumping ship well in advance?
Yeah - just a coincidence he followed his coach .
You think UNC was too poor ?
Logic

All about the $$$. Would he have gone back to Kentucky if cal had stayed. Maybe. But we will never know.

Everybody highballed him. Just turns out that Arkansas balls were higher than Chong.

$1 million for a college basketball player who is a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 shows you how great of a country we live in. Not to get political with this but when you live in a country when dudes like that are getting 7 figures, people need to campaign on that. $1 million and no one know who the eff he is 30 minutes outside Fayetteville, Arkansas.

What it really says is that there are a whole lot of people with a shitload of money !

That's the point. Only in America can we think of a system where fitlhy rich dudes and average Joe's come together to spend money that they have no use for on players to play for their favorite college team. Try explaining this system to a European. They'd think we are insane. But everyone is rich.

Capel needs to stop expending much time, resources and energy on pursuing the "highly coveted" transfers like this guy. Pitt never gets these types in the end, and that's a matter of historical fact that has preceded Capel for decades.

Absolutely right. Same thing happens every time. Also in football with local kids.

I mostly agree with you but in this case, sure seemed like the overriding sentiment was that Pitt was his choice over UNC until Arky (and all their $$) came in late after not being involved at all.
