This is Why the Playoffs Should Not Expand

There aren’t enough elite teams out there to warrant anything beyond 4 teams.
You can't take the results of one season and apply them generally.

This year there were 3 elite teams, then a big dropoff.

Next year there might be no elite teams and 10 that are one or two losses.

People always make the mistake in applying recency bias. Every year is different.

I didnt think Oklahoma was that good, but having quite a few injuries and suspensions isnt helping them either.

All you would get is more blowouts or a rematch between SEC or Big 10 teams. There is absolutely no reason to go beyond 6 teams, but I would still keep it at 4.

Im going to say 4 elite teams. Without the injury to Tua Alabama is right up there with the other 3.

Oregon had a case to be here. Maybe having 8 would weed out the duds in the first round.

And the cream would rise to the top.
Prove it on the field. Bowl games have become more and more irrelevant.
8 teams would give each power conference a play in game and let the powers to be pick 3 at large.
Have to make some adjustments but it will happen.
Playoffs have expanded just about every sport.

The cream rose to the top during the regular season. The PAC12 and Big 12 have ZERO teams that are deserving of being involved in the playoff. Oklahoma is the closest thing and they are getting blasted.

Disagree a million percent. Expanding the playoffs makes the regular season way more important. Virginia/VT and Min/Wis would have been defacto Round of 32 games. They win that rivalry game then their conference championship. Then they are in the Round of 8.

Memphis/Cincy becomes a Round of 16 game.

Oregon needing to win the Pac 12 would have made that game more interesting.

There would have been 20 or so teams in contention (even Pitt) until the last couple weeks.

Does anyone think the Steelers are going to win the Super Bowl? But people will be celebrating a playoff bid for a mediocre team, that's for sure. Why not skip all that and have the Ravens and Patriots play.

There have been plenty of blowouts in the CFP. Virtually every playoff has had at least 1 25+ point blowout in the opening round. The #1&#2 teams are 8-3 after the LSU game.

2019 - LSU blowout
2018 - Clemson 4 TD blowout of Notre Dame
2017 - Pretty even, although you could argue that Clemson at #1 got blown out
2016 - Ohio State shut out and lost by 31
2015 - MSU shut out and beat by 38, Oklahoma loses by 20
2014 - FSU blown out by 39

I think 8 teams helps to create more parity, because more teams have a chance and could recruit a little bit better.

The teams in the playoffs don't have to be elite. I want crappy teams (LIKE PITT) to be able to pull an upset and get in, CHAMPION has nothing to do with BEST TEAM.

It should be 16 or 24, I want Pitt to have at least a slight chance of losing a playoff game 63-28.

That's true this year, its true most years, and will be the rule as college football talent thins out and moves to a few elite programs.

But just like other sports a larger playoff system should be in place ( 8 teams).
5 P5 conference winners
3 WIldcard teams

Maybe there's one to many P5 conferences.

Make it the P4.

Move weaker programs to the other conferences and the remainder fit in 4 major conferences.
This would create an incentive to invest and improve your teams program to stay in the P4
