UConn for real?

Anyone remember the Danny Hurley vs Jeff Capel debate during the coaching search, with a lot of “experts” opining that Capel would be a better hire? It ended prematurely when Hurley took the UConn job. Five years later, there can be no real debate.

It reminded me of the debate about whether Jamie or Jay Wright was the better coach, with a lot of “experts” picking Jamie. Two national titles later, I would hope they admit they were mistaken. The now-retired Wright was clearly the better coach.

Hurley is better but I think it's been clear across the Calhoun/Ollie/Hurley era that UConn is an easier school to get top talent to than Pitt. Well not top-top talent like Kentucky or Duke, but they get a ton of 30-150 ranked national guys no matter the coach it seems.

Nah
We wanted Hurley
He didn’t want us

Kevin Ollie won a championship at UConn and was fired a few years later
It’s hard to not win there - same with Xavier

It was crystal clear before. Some people chose not to see it.

For sure, my only complaint is when people blame Heather for this. Hurley's press conference made it clear that Pitt was his third choice after UConn AND Rhode Island, and it seems we offered around $1 million more per year than UConn. That's how bad our job was considered after the Stallings fiasco.

Capel was just a poor hire in general. His track record was not good as a head coach. He won his conference one time in 9 seasons at VCU and Oklahoma and his two final years at Oklahoma were not good. Yet, we still brought him in anyway. Would have been better to go with an unknown.

Or we would have had another winless ACC season because the unknown couldn't recruit, who knows. For better or worse, I think Capel will either have an NCAA Panthers squad or be gone within a year or two. I think we're at the crossroads, but thankfully this year is looking quite up, barring another late season melt down.
