The real question is why would an agent accept a “verbal agreement “?Agreed I saw the kid play against Kansas and was less than impressed. Theres no one out there knocking on his door to throw a ton of cash at him.
But why the heck would this kid retain an agent to pull in $100K?
I feel like Houston's QB did this forever ago. A believe a Clemson QB did as well. And so it begins.....
This is actually going to be entertaining.
On the FAN today, unless I misheard it, Pat Bostick said you couldn’t sign an agreement until you were enrolled and on-campus. He didn’t go into specifics though, so not certain of the details. The real question is why would an agent accept a “verbal agreement “?
Players have agents to take care of the business side - same reason why coaches have agents .
They are all professionals now .
Yes, I’ve heard the same thing. I’d imagine the collective would want to make sure the player signs before agreeing to payments. But the NCAA might want it that way as well to discourage recruitment of players from other teams? On the FAN today, unless I misheard it, Pat Bostick said you couldn’t sign an agreement until you were enrolled and on-campus. D’Eriq King (Houston/Miami) redshirted after 4 games with a plan to transfer, but that was pre-NIL.I feel like Houston's QB did this forever ago. A believe a Clemson QB did as well.
But similar in that it was done to preserve a year of eligibility. Clemson QB did the same and eventually went to Mizzou. Clemson had to start a TR FR when there was an injury to their starting QB.D’Eriq King (Houston/Miami) redshirted after 4 games with a plan to transfer, but that was pre-NIL.

My position as well.I agree. College football is a complete mess now. It's becoming unwatchable. I went to the Pitt-YSU game last Saturday and I'm just not that interested in Pitt or college football that much any longer, all because of NIL and the overpaid primadonnas and entitled brats playing. All major programs are at fault, including Pitt. And these kids are greedy and don't care about the program or school at all. I can't support that because it's just another version of the corrupt NFL. If and when they ever get back to playing real college football again, I'll reconsider.
Creating another pro league only worked once. It won't happen again.I agree. College football is a complete mess now. It's becoming unwatchable. I get the feeling this is about to become an annual thing elsewhere now. God I hope this is the thing that finally get this all sorted out with collective bargaining.
wait, the starting qb of an undefeated team was going to get benched for the backup, who hasnt played at all? so he left? This one is probably more about playing team. He’s on the cusp of being regulated to a depth piece, so he’s going to redshirt to go somewhere else for more PT.
why do they have to be disguised? No one is auditing this or even pretending too. i know the "idea" behind the NIL deal but that was just words from a few years back. no one cares, no one is checking on them, no one is even pretending to enforce a rule that technically doesnt exist.Of course you cant. These arent technically pay for play contracts or to be used in recruiting. So it has to be handshake deals until that time. They have to be disguised. So once enrolled, you can sign a contract with a collective to show up at a charity or 2 and in return, you get $100K/month or whatever the amount is.

the ncaa passed this NIL crap off as it but again, it's not even something anyone is pretending to enforce so no need to go thru the act of faking it. ohio state paid a high school junior from texas 6 figures to be their 4th string qb 3 years ago.
is it a rule if it's never been enforced? Ncaa doesnt even pretend to care, not one action or even statement has been made by them on the subject..I
It needs to be disguised because pay for play is still against NCAA rules. Yes, these are all pay for play deals and yes, the NCAA isnt enforcing it but it is better to be safe than sorry, then. You make a good point though, if I was a big-time recruit or transfer, maybe I ask for everything in writing before arriving on campus and tell them the NCAA aint going to care so draw me up a pay for play deal right now or I'll find someone who will.

no one is disguising it. pickett and addison got trucks from dealerships, they didnt do anything. Ewers got paid by ohio state and texas without doing anything. was it byu or utah that gave all the walk ons free tuition? You think those walk ons did anything to get that?
It's always been pay for play, no one is even saying otherwise. you'd think that someone should go thru the efforts of faking it but it's not even worth the effort to lie about it.
Not so. He was the entrenched starter at QB, was brought in from Holy Cross to be the starter, has played at a high level on an undefeated team and has 2 guys behind him who have never thrown a college pass. This one is probably more about playing team. sorry cashisking, i thought you were referring to the unlv situation, that's why i was confused. my badBear Alexander does not start at QB, and USC is not undefeated

Missed that-my bad.Bear Alexander is the subject of the tweet I’m responding to, not the UNLV QB.
These Portnoy types won't ever quit....thus the bidding wars will happen.Dave Portnoy says he'll pay $3 million to bring an elite quarterback to Michigan
Let the bidding wars begin!
You don’t like to watch players celebrate first downs when they are down 20 points?I agree. College football is a complete mess now. It's becoming unwatchable. Giving Pickett and Addison a 1 year lease on a new vehicle for posting some stuff on Instagram isnt even that outlandish. So those were marketing deals. The value of that lease was more than the value of the IG posts but not its not Zack Edey getting 7 figures to show up at an Ontario animal shelter.
BYU walk-ons (and I think all players) get paid to make a social media post about a BYU fanboy's candy bar company. Again, the value of their post (which is probably worth only a couple dollars) doesnt align with the money they get but the NCAA doesn't monitor these deals. They just want to see that it is indeed a marketing deal. If you want to pay a player $10 million to slap your kid high five, that's fine. They dont enforce the $$$ paid being too high for the market value.
These things have to cause resentment and division throughout locker rooms. Not just at Pitt but everywhere. Egos of 18-24 year olds that have been told they are the best since they first played then become disgruntled when others start getting extra privileges/gifts. A lot of immature athletes are going to kill seasons/programs as NIL further explodes out of control.
Well/ this player met both criteria .On the FAN today, unless I misheard it, Pat Bostick said you couldn’t sign an agreement until you were enrolled and on-campus. He didn’t go into specifics though, so not certain of the details.
So - it wasn’t “a mess “ when coaches are making $8-15mil a year ) and bolting ?I agree. College football is a complete mess now. It's becoming unwatchable. Very true, good point.Well/ this player met both criteria .
this is college football. again, no one cares, there are no rules. the pay for play is out of the bag..A 1 year lease on a truck isnt worth all that much.
That stands to reason. But sit back and enjoy the whole system destroy itself. These things have to cause resentment and division throughout locker rooms. Not just at Pitt but everywhere. He had plenty of interest. I'd be shocked too if any P4 shcools offered to bring him in and just hand him the keys as QB1. I can see bringing him in to compete. He's a good runner & I'm sure a few coaches think they can turn him into a capable passer.Sluka runs pretty well and has some toughness about him, but he throws the ball like Jurkovec. There’s a reason UNLV’s offense has taken a step back from where they were last year, and the QB position is a major part of it.
There is absolutely zero chance he had offers from P4 schools to come in and be their starting QB.
Not looking good for SMF.Marcus Cromartie, Sluka's agent, is doing an interview right now on XM 84. He called out the UNLV OC as the person that made the promises. The promises were made without consent of HC Odom or the collective.
This is pretty much how it goes from here. Whoever is the richest and the dumbest gets to play GM. And interfere with other teams players potentially too.this is college football. again, no one cares, there are no rules. the pay for play is out of the bag..
