as expected the 2019 game will probably be the last game between the two for a very long time.Just read a quote given today from the PSU ADthat the earliest the two will probably play will be 2030 or beyond. Now that it is determined Heathers scheduling concerns should be more short term since we have a lot of openings for the next decade and schedules are filling up fast with daily announcements by other schools for the early part of the 20' s. North Carolina and Minnesota just announce a two game series for 23 and 24.A series or two with middle of the pack Big 10 teams should be considered. We must start scheduling more realistically in order to win more games which would make recruiting much easier.

pocono, PItt already attempted to schedule a middle of the pack Big 10 team but UPS said no thanks.

So playing Akron and Tulane helps recruiting more than playing Penn State and Oklahoma State?

Having 21,378 fewer seats would help recruiting according to some.

Starting games at 3:30 instead of 12:00 would help recruiting according to others.

Perhaps Pitt should have rejected the ACC and asked to join the MAC

I’d rather forfeit and take the automatic L instead of playing PSU in any sport. Why would you want to associatr yourself with their athletic department in any way? I wouldn’t go to the PSU game if you paid me $1000 to go. I’m embarassed for any Pitt fan who tailgates and has fun with any PSU fan in the lots. When they showed Pitt and PSU fans together in the lots before the last game at Heinze, my stomach turned.

I’d rather play Nebraska, MSU, Tennessee, Oklahoma St, etc. middle of the road P5 schools. Screw the automatic W’s, I want to see what Pitt has as a football team and coach, not have some artificial smoke blown up my ass.

I hate to be the gossip person but I talked with a PSU player the other day and he told me Franklin HAPPILY announced to the team that he told them that Penn State would not be renewing the contract at all. What arrogance. But hey if they are that scared to play us then so be it. Just more complete BS on their part.

1. Do you think scheduling Bowling Green and Memphis helps recruiting more than scheduling West Virginia and Tennessee?

2. A lot of Pitt fans must embarrass you. And probably don’t care.

3. It’s Heinz Field.

Glad to see a statement like this. The only reason for this game to really be played is historical significance between the in-state teams as the only two P5s in the state. And I get that and can see the argument from many older fans in this space. Outside of that though, its really a "meh" for me in terms of locking them in beyond just a couple games here and there....and to be truthful even that is kind of a meh itself. As someone who travels to most away games, State College just in not an away game worth taking in considering that campus is in the middle of nowhere so it becomes a drive in, drive out trip regardless if you live in Pittsburgh or elsewhere. As we saw when Pitt beat PSU two seasons ago to open the recent series, Pitt received no recruiting or poll bounce. Unlikely playing a national team like Clemson (who is in conference and ended up winning the national championship) when we won down there, you had people talking across the country following that game.

Pitt needs to schedule some additional national opponents and also should cowtail like other programs to scheduling a difficult schedule. They should not go down the path of playing one half decent P5 team followed by all cupcake games and I definitely would never want the ACC to follow the Big Tens footsteps in going to only three OOC games. That kills variety and also hides some of their top teams from facing other conferences teams, trading in games to playing teams like Rutgers, Indiana, Maryland, almost the entire Big Ten West.

Focus on national opponents in areas with recruiting interests preferably with destinations worth attending away games.

That's a pretty big leap. For example, Pitt played Texas A&M in 2002 and 2003. They also played MSU and Iowa several times without having to play PSU. There are plenty of other P5 opponents.

So if you have some neighbors and friends (like myself) that have gone to PSU, I would embarrass you for tailgating with them a bit before the game? Good to know, I'll stay away from them now because of where they went to school. Disgusting of me to ever do that my humble apologies!

what player did you talk to?

Focus on a long term deal now with WVU for a rivalry game.
Yes, I completely agree with this.

Anyone with a brain could have seen this coming from a mile away. Penn State does not want to play Pitt, it’s just that simple.

I think it’s ridiculous too, but if they don’t want to play us, what can you do? Are you going to force them to play us through legislation? I don’t want that either.

I think having that off the table now completely unburdens us and should encourage Lyke to pursue a long term series with West Virginia – our other major rival.

Is West Virginia, Penn State? No, they are not. Frankly, they never will be. However, that’s a pretty nice number two the have and our fans respond to that game as well.

Also, if they do play West Virginia on an annual basis, I don’t want some throwaway early September game. Historical rivals should not play games while baseball season is still in full effect. It should be every year on Thanksgiving weekend – end of story.

1.) no, it does not. I want to keep scheduling tennessee’s etc as I said in the 2nd part, but your only focus was on PSU, so you stopped reading.

2.) yes, a lot of Pitt fans embarass me. Their talk never backs up their actions.

Are you constantly on here talking about your hate for them, about how you won’t send a kid to psu etc? Looks like no because you have virtually no posts.

I can guarantee you I would not be tailgaiting with my neighbor or family member who was a Ravens or Flyers fan. On gameday, they can drop dead for all I care.

Pitt-WVU benefits us in two ways.

1) play the Friday after thanksgiving.....and we can turn this into the premier rivalry in the east.

2) it also means no one will care who PSU plays. While There will be considerable interest in the backyard brawl......no one will give a rat's ass who PSU gins up as their "rival".

On rivalry weekend over Tgiving.....we will be part of the fun and PSU won't

No, it's not. The OP suggested easier schedules helps recruiting. Substitute Penn State for any quality P5 program. The OP is implying that recruiting would be made easier if Pitt scheduled Bucknell instead.

I want to play PSU, it makes sense in so many ways. In a perfect world Pitt would be in conference with PSU and WV play WV 1st Saturday of October every year and play PSU after Thanksgiving every year. This is not a perfect world and all 3 schools are in different conferences. 1 school has no interest in playing the other 2 schools. So we must move a long.

To all fans who say they don't want to play PSU, grow up. The best thing for PA football as a whole is when Pitt and PSU are good and playing against each other. To deny that then you are being as delusional as PSU fans.

Re read my post I said more realistic scheduling results in a better record which helps recruiting.I didn’t say to schedule all doormats I said mid of the pack Big Ten teams like North Carolina did with Minnesota. Its difficult to recruit off mediocre records. The formula should be one brand name team , another power five mid of the pack team , a MAC team and a opener with a fcs team or another group five,Guess it’s okay for Alabama and other powers to schedule three gimmies .

Alabama would draw recruits and fans if they played four women's powderpuff teams. I don't think Pitt would draw better recruits if they played Lafayette and Buffalo instead of Notre Dame and Central Florida.

OOC games don't really help recruiting very much no matter who they are...

Winning 9 or 10 games consistenly helps recruiting... winning the coastal helps recruiting. Not isolated, meaningless OOC games.

Nobody is coming to Pitt because we got thumped OOC by Alabama.

The OK ST series hurt our recruiting more than playing any 1-AA or MAC team ever could.

Proof? There is no way to validate that statement and you know it. YOU prefer a gimmie win so you make a opinion and try to pass it off as fact. The reality is that Pitt needs to quit being it owns worse enemy and it looks like they finally learned that.

Easier to recruit with a 5-7 record or a 6-7 possibly 7-6 record?

Great post, but I 100% disagree with the "meh" comment. The 2016 matchup was the highest attended game ever in Heinz Field history - that's including all of the beloved Steeler games too. You're nuts if you think that's "meh".

The crowd was exactly the same for YSU as it was for Ok St. (Before OK St obliterated us in the first qtr and most ppl left) at that point the YSU crowd was much better.

We got a W against YSU but got embarrassed on national TV by Ok St. Idk what other "proof" you need, but that is definitive proof.

easier schedule = more wins = better recruiting

^this is not how it works.

I don't care who the schools are (PSU, WVU, ND) but we need to schedule teams that will draw a large crowd to the game. THEN, we need to beat those teams in front of large crowds. THEN, recruiting will pick up.

The only home playoff game the Steelers had since stadium expansion was the Jags I believe in the divisional round... that is not exactly SRO worthy.

Nonsense... this formula hasn't worked and will not work...

This ridiculous way of thinking is why we have one season of double digit wins since the early 80s.

We need to schedule OOC to help get us to 10 wins. No one remembers who you beat, all they remember is that Pitt won 10 games. We are nowhere near the playoffs yet, so we need to build some big win seasons, then after a bunch of big win seasons, then worry about if our schedule is strong enough to be selected for the playoffs.

OOC needs to be wins. Screw the losses to the aTm's, Nebraska's and MSU's of the world. I do like WVU every year as our rival and as a fun winnable game. We just can't compete on the same level as PSU and they've rigged the game to be that way. Screw them. Time to move on.

This is the correct answer.

Heather Lyke should delete Barbour's number from her phone. Don't play them in any other sports. They can take the students who can't get into Pitt and indoctrinate them in their bubble in cultville. F Penn State.

I agree totally, if they only want to play us in what many consider the "minor sports" and won't schedule us in the "major sports", don't play them in anything at all.
