USA Soccer thread spring/summer 2023

I’ve come up with 6 who are clearly separated from all the others.

Klingenberg (pine-Richland/Pgh Strikers/UNC/USWNT World Cup champion

dellerosa (Brownsville/Riverhounds/UNC/USWNT U20 World Cup)

Schram (canon Mac/Beadling/PSU/USWNT U20 World Cup champion/dapper Dan Sportswoman of the year)

Hill (Trinity/Beadling/WVU captain and all American

Stahl (baldwin/Beadling/WVU)

Latsgo (peters Twp/Century/Virginia/Houston Dash)

Ranking them in order is the tough part

I might put Frannie Crouse on the list too. She played at GCC and Beadling, scored over 40 goals at PSU, played on the USWNT U23 team and had one appearance in the NPSL for North Carolina Courage (drafted 10th overall) and scored a goal in her only professional match. She might even be top 5. Tough to debate the career she had. soccer was never her passion but was always the fastest player on the field. Imagine being that good without the amount of love for the game that her peers had. So I guess I have a top 7.
Women's soccer is so good in Western PA. I was wondering do like all the big schools have D1 players every single year? And for the purposes of this post, I would count girls who go to say, a Lebo, but only play for Century/Beadling/Riverhounds. Seems like if you are a Top 2-3 player in those big districts, you are D1

I find this interesting because in a recent interview, Christian was asked about the premier league, and then seemed to indicate that he prefers to stay in the Prem. I always thought a move to a place like West Ham would be good, but Palace could work too. @pitt90seven

Lyon is also showing interest in France.

I don't know what Chelsea would want for him. but even if it's free transfer, we can't afford his wages (7.8M pounds). west ham probably wouldn't pay his wages, either.

I don't know where he fits. the other EPL teams who could use him can't afford him. the ones who CAN afford him don't want or need him. Chelsea will have to pay at least 1/3 of his salary to get rid of him.

I could see 15M transfer fee and 100k/week for a mid level club.

The 20 million fee keeps getting thrown around and even clubs like Lyon and the ones in Italy can pay that. So I would assume an EPL team can afford that. But you’re right, the big clubs aren’t interested, and all the others can’t afford his wages. I’ve heard that he will be ok with a slash in wages…he’s smart enough to realize he has to. Afterall who is going to pay him his kind of money when he has a history of injuries? He has one year left on his Chelsea contract, so outside of them picking up part of his wages this year, im not sure what else they do.

Absolutely. In that section with Lebo, BP, PT, USC and CM, w/ now Norwin in it and formerly having Moon, you better have minimum of 2+ D1 players per class, for a total of 8+ D1 level players per roster, or you’re not even making the playoffs. It’s like the EPL with the Big 6 and only 4 getting into the UCL.

If you look at when Moon, Norwin, Canon Mac, USC and Peters won state titles, there’s a direct correlation between D1 players and banners. Over the last 15 years, when you looks at the times schools like BP, Lebo and C-M were in playoff droughts, it’s because they didn’t have those D1 players.

So in other words, those school’s starting 11’s and the next 4-5 who see the field consistently, half of those players are committed to D1 programs, or nearly committed to D1 programs because many girls commit as sophomores.

I've said before, my niece's team for sure her senior year, maybe her junior year as well, could have played 11 D1 players at the same time without even having to play anyone out of position. I don't think they ever did, because they had seniors and juniors that went D2 and D3 that got playing time over freshmen and sophomores that ended up going D1. But at one time or another those players all played. Just probably not at the same time.

Peters usually has more than 11 D1 players every single year but he hasn’t been able to win titles in over a decade. It’s always good for section titles but not WPIAL or state titles. And that’s mainly because he’s been unlucky there and hasn’t had D1 goal scorers. He’s had to plug in pedigreed club defenders or midfielders Into his attack. So he falls short. Schools like Norwin and CM had players who were forwards at the club and collegiate level post graduation.

hard to walk away from a few million pounds. still, dude needs to play regularly. that's gotta be his top priority. wherever that may be.

That Hercules Gomez interview with him was interesting. When he asked Pulisic if it mattered what league he preferred to play in, Pulisic hesitated, and then I expected him to give a politically correct response (knowing Serie A teams are interested). Instead he said he wants to play in the Prem. I almost thought I heard him wrong. But I have to wonder if it’s because he knows they can pay him higher wages than the other leagues. Or…maybe he likes the idea of not having to move. A team like palace would be seemless.

A boy from the AK Valley asked me, "sir what is soccer?" And I explained to him, it is an exercise used to develop FG kickers in football.

Yeah I don’t get it. Even at my kids school, a large 6A school, they rely on soccer kids to do the kicking. I can’t believe that none of those athletes already in the team can’t kick a ball through a goalpost. It’s not that hard.

as I saw the starting 11 for this gold cup game, I see Yedlin and Jordan Morris in the starting lineup. now, I start wondering, is this a replay of a 2015 game.

Jordan effing Morris. Lol. Of course he subs out and Vasquez comes in and scores.

As far as Yedlin, I wondered if BJ would go with his experience and didn’t have a big problem with it given the premier league attacking threats of Jamaica.

Btw the other Morris is an intriguing player. But he looked not ready for prime time tonight.

what a mess that was. visions of the T&T game. we should be beating Jamaica by 3 goals. ugh.

Really? I don’t see it like that. We had an MLS lineup. They had 7 EPL players in theirs. Of course one of them, Leon Bailey, looked like a USL player on that penalty and rebound attempt. Lol

yeah I don't care. I'm so sick of not being able to beat these little countries. mariappa played for palace like 15 years ago and now he's in league 2. dude started the match for them. they have a GK who plays for the river hounds. we're so shit, honestly.

They played 80+ minutes without a real number 9 on the field, and didn't get any real offensive threat out of the position (for the record, I did not see every minute of the game, but I saw almost all of it, so it is possible that I could have missed one). And then they put a real number 9 on the field and five minutes later he scores a goal.

So the whole Gold Cup will be these players and not any of the real players?

So the whole Gold Cup will be these players and not any of the real players?

mostly not the A squad.

GOALKEEPERS (3): Sean Johnson (Toronto FC/CAN; 12/0), Gaga Slonina (Chelsea/ENG; 1/0), Matt Turner (Arsenal/ENG; 26/0)

MIDFIELDERS (6): Gianluca Busio (Venezia/ITA; 9/0), Djordje Mihailovic (AZ Alkmaar/NED; 6/1), Aidan Morris (Columbus Crew; 2/0), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders; 32/3), James Sands (New York City FC; 8/0), Alan Soñora (FC Juárez/MEX; 2/0)

FORWARDS (6): Cade Cowell (San Jose Earthquakes; 3/0), Jesús Ferreira (FC Dallas; 18/8), Julian Gressel (Vancouver Whitecaps/CAN; 2/0), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders; 52/11), Brandon Vazquez (FC Cincinnati; 3/1), Alex Zendejas (Club América/MEX; 3/1)

REPPING FROM NEAR AND FAR

As expected, this Gold Cup roster has a more U.S.-based influence, with a total of 16 of the 23 players coming from Major League Soccer. Players also join from clubs in England (2), Italy (2), Mexico (2) and Netherlands (1).

With two selections each, FC Cincinnati and Seattle Sounders lead the list of 12 MLS teams represented on the roster, followed by Atlanta United, Columbus Crew, FC Dallas, Inter Miami, LAFC, LA Galaxy, New England Revolution, New York City FC, New York Red Bulls and San Jose Earthquakes.

Five players will do double duty as part of both the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup squads: goalkeepers Sean Johnson and Matt Turner, defender Miles Robinson, midfielder Alan Soñora and forward Alex Zendejas.

EXPERIENCE AT THE CORE

The roster is anchored with players who have tournament action under their belts. A total of 11 players have previous Gold Cup experience, with eight having won the competition at least once and 10 having reached a final. Matt Turner and Miles Robinson earned a spot on the 2021 Tournament Best XI, leading a total of six players to lift the ’21 championship trophy.
In addition, the squad features seven players from the 2022 FIFA World Cup team: Jesús Ferreira, Sean Johnson, Aaron Long, Jordan Morris, Cristian Roldan, Matt Turner and DeAndre Yedlin.

With 78 appearances, two-time FIFA World Cup veteran Yedlin is the leading cap winner, followed by Morris (52), Long (32), Roldan (32), Turner (26), Matt Miazga (23) and Miles Robinson (21). Sean Johnson becomes the ninth USMNT player named to five or more Gold Cup rosters, joining DaMarcus Beasley (6), Landon Donovan (6), Frankie Hejduk (6), Kasey Keller (6), Clint Dempsey (5), Brad Guzan (5), Cobi Jones (5) and Eric Wynalda (5).

When I saw the lineups, I knew it would be close. Only a few of these players could make a true USMNT 2nd 11. Its more of a C team than B team.

Oh wait. 32? I thought he was like 30. Never mind. Turner was 28 when he got to arsenal. I think Freidl was in his upper 20’s when he went to Liverpool. There was another concacaf keeper who went over at an older age. Not sure who I’m thinking of. But yeah…32 is getting up there.

I don't understand why they aren't taking this competition seriously.
There are few entities, which are worse run than US Soccer.
Again, because it’s more important to our program for our A-teamers to get a few weeks off and then report to club camps in Europe. They’re all in transition right now and need to get off on the right foot with their new teams this summer.

Playing in the gold cup sets them all behind a month.

Speaking of concacaf keepers, albeit this one extremely young…heres some news on Gaga. I kinda expect things to change, but as of right now, he might be Chelsea’s #2. Personally I’d prefer he got on on loan so that he plays.

Preferred Slonina play tonight so that he’s cap tied. But the MLS curtain jerker gets the start in goal.

I can see Sean Johnson if this Jamaica but it's stinking St. Kitts and Nevis. Give Gabi his chance.

That's the "let's give this long time team player a start against a team that we should crush without really trying" play.

I mean it's dumb. But if you were going to play Johnson in one of the games this is the one.

the WC this year certainly screwed things up. I would've rather they played the B/C guys in the nation's cup as the gold cup is actually a decent competition.

and I don't want to know how ST&N is in this competition but Canada isn't.

LOL. Is St Kitts the worst International club??

tiny country. the Caribbean countries have some guys who's grandparents came from the country but those guys live in england/france/etc. so they play for grandpa's countries b/c they can't make it for England or whatever.

but Gibraltar is worse. "country," of like 30k. Gibraltar is pretty much an all-star beer league team from mars township.

LOL. Is St Kitts the worst International club??

No. They are one of the better smaller nations. They have 2 guys who play in the Championship. 5-6 others play in the 5th, 6th, and 7th divisions in England. While that isnt good, they are much better than the Oceania islander nations and many other Caribbean and Asian countries (the ones who dont really play soccer like Nepal).

i don't count the countries who really don't play.

Everyone plays soccer but its not real popular in Mongolia, Nepal, Burma, etc. St. Kitts would beat a bunch of these countries. They'd also probably beat some of the lower African and European countries. They are ranked 139th out of 211.
