Vanderbilt game thread

Basketball refs are independent contractors. There are no SEC refs, or ACC refs, or whatever. Those guys do games all over the place.

I'm not sure how many more times we will need to repeat this before folks finally get it. For example, Doug Sirmons who did this game did our Fairleigh Dickinson game at the Pete.

He didn't get it off. 1.1 isnt enough time to try the modified Bryce Drew play. Really your only chances are to throw a hail mary in the hopes someone can catch and shoot it (Federiko should have shot it) but those get deflected 9 times out of 10. Or try to run a few guys going forward so they can take 1 dribble and launch a half courter. At least you'll get the shot off but the chance of that going in is 1%-2%
If Burton is directly facing Fede and handles it cleanly,he gets of a long unguarded, head on shot.

I liked the design of the last play, but we needed more like 2 seconds for that to have a realistic chance. I was expecting 3/4 court heave.

I'm still not in tune with college hoops yet, but I was able to catch tonight's game. What's the deal with Hugley? I know he missed some time early with an injury, but it seems like his conditioning should be much better than it is by the first week in December.

Went too soon on offense. I get it… until it doesn’t work.

Oh well.

Capel era…

I guess the decision point is whether you are tied or behind.

Tied - hold for one.

Behind, extend the game if you miss. We could have fouled and then had another posession to tie.

So probably the right strategy especially with getting a good shot. Just didn’t block them cleanly at the end

James Breeding, who is the guy who completely botched the double technical, has done plenty of Pitt games in the past.

He caught it facing away from the basket, didn't he? No way he could shoot from there.

He did (and still does) plenty of games for the Big East. I think I've seen him once in the ACC.

Do the ACC and the Big East (and several other smaller conferences) still have the consortium (or whatever the heck you want to call it) to help schedule referees? I know they did a few years ago, but I don't know if they still have it.

It was like the ACC, the Big East, A10, NEC, Patriot and a couple others iirc.

Yea, it would have taken a Laettner shot. Success rate there: 5%. But it was 0% handing it off because there wasnt enough time
Too bad that Laettner wasn't taking the shot, though. Fede was, and he is never going to be able to turn and shoot in that situation. The play must have been for him to catch and dish. It just didn't work.

Here's an article about it from five years ago:

Referees

"After the ACC formed a men’s basketball officiating alliance in June 2016 with the Big East, Atlantic 10 and Colonial Athletic Association, four new conferences joined the alliance Thursday: the Ivy League, Patriot League, Big South and Northeast."

He was -13 in the game. Terrible for a team that lost by 1.

I honestly don't know. I might know someone who might. When I get a chance I will ask him.

Even more reason to keep him on the bench until mop up time, if we're ever ahead of anyone else by 20+ in the final 2 minutes. That may never happen again this year. It's a shame that he contributed more to Vandy scoring than to Pitt.

It was for him to catch and pass but 1.1 seconds isnt enough time to do that. In that amount of time, the only way to get a shot off is a catch and shoot or a half court type shot.

But the coaches obviously thought that was Pitt’s best chance, and that there was enough time. They certainly know the players better than any of us do.

Let’s be honest -
The game was lost with the two made FTs
At least the design was good even if there wasn’t enough time to execute

But they were wrong. 1.1 seconds is simply not enough time to run that play. If you are looking for evidence to prove my point, they ran it near perfectly and still didnt get it off. You need 2 seconds for that.

Yes, they ran a play and did the best that they could with it.

Except it was the wrong play. The chances of scoring there are almost 0 no matter what you do. But they are DEFINITELY 0 to try the handoff play there. No time
