VBall - BYU Nike Invitational

Browske has been really good so far.

This team won’t have the star power they’ve had before, but they are really good 2-deep at every position. I wouldn’t be shocked if Pitt’s bench is the 4th best team in the ACC.

Vasquez-Gomez had a great match. So did Fairbanks. Buzzerio had the best match she has had as a Panther and I think she will get better and better as she gets more used to her teammates.

Dalton disappears at times, then has a kill, then disappears again. She was good in the first two sets, disappeared in the third and in the first part of the 4th, then had two kills in our run in the 4th.

Ennis seems to be a designated server. She served well in the first set. Nothing special after that. Cat Flood got put in three times to serve. Not sure why. We scored 1 point with her serving.

Saw a lot of Pitt parents in the stands. Nice weekend for them, 3-0. With all the Southern California players we have, plus one from Utah and one from Colorado, it’s a good trip for them on a holiday weekend.

I tried to watch a movie on the BYU channel after the game ended. The cast was 90% blonde and 100% boring. I turned it off after 5 minutes because I was afraid my blood would turn to sugar from excess sweetness.

Browske was excellent- may have been the best match of her career.

I thought our libero play last was just okay for most of last season- if Browske can play like this most nights it will really elevate this team’s ceiling -

The improvement since the San Diego State match in such a short time is very impressive. He has instilled a lot of mental toughness in this team. When they got up 15-9 in the third set and then BYU made a little run to get it down to 3, he took a time out and they came back and just traded side outs the rest of the way. There was never any feeling that they would break.

And San Diego swept Ohio St tonight at OSu.

The improvement since the San Diego State

For the record, San Diego, not San Diego State. San Diego is pretty good this season, somewhere in the teens in the poll this week. San Diego State, on the other hand, is not good, or even close to it.

Another quick note from last night’s match - I believe the announcers said PItt scored 14 of their first 15 points in the decisive 4 the game on kills. That’s just about perfect offensive volleyball.

PItt played at an elite level vs a top team on their home court last night. H2P!

Last night was the first match that I have watched this year. I really like the new additions. They give us size that we have never had before. It will take time for this team to gel but I think their ceiling is higher than prior teams. Whether we get to that ceiling or not is a different story but I really like what I see.

I’m a little surprised this is still taking place at BYU, tbh.
I don’t think it is. Here is a very thorough and fair look into the situation. I found it hard to understand because this kind of thing is not acceptable in our society. Do we have flawed people? Absolutely. But they are normally not dumb enough to do this in a public place in this country…especially with minorities around them. Now europe on the other hand, it happens every day.

unless something else has since come to light, it looks like the charges came from a politically motivated person…and it got legs before a thorough investigation.

Two more things.

(1) We killed BYU with blocks in the first 2 sets and they were hardly able to block us at all. I think they had one block in two sets. They changed their tactics in Set 3 and they had a number of blocks. They varied their hitters instead of going to Livingston constantly and that also helped them offensively.

Good move by their coach. But, Fisher countered it in Set 4. They got many less blocks in Set 4. Also, when Livingston was in the back row, she is not an effective hitter. So when she was back there, we focused on blocking their other two hitters.

(2) There was a point in Set 4 when we had a 2 point lead and BYU made two consecutive amazing — but 100% lucky — defensive plays to tie the score. Their crowd was going crazy. It was the kind of thing that you worry is going to mentally stress Pitt. It didn’t. We ran off three straight points, two on kills from Vasquez-Gomez which they had zero percent chance to dig. They never got closer than 2 after that. It was a great display of mental toughness.

Also, watch the team after BYU returns the serve. As the serve is going into the back row, watch Fairbanks (I think) on the right side of the front row move over and turn sideways to take the pass. The pass to her is perfect and she quickly gets it all the way across to Vasquez-Gomez on the right, who puts it away. BYU never had time to get into a blocking position.

I watched the tOSU Louisville Match. I don't think Louisville is as dominant as last year.

Cincy beat a ranked team earlier this year. I can’t recall who.

Anyone else hear the statement to the fans before the match started? That was as strong a statement about fan behavior as I have ever heard. The problem is there weren't 100 people in the stands. I assume they will repeat it before the start of each match.

Los Angeles has a huge Mormon population, so that racial abuse incident got big coverage here. In fact, when they identified the guy who made all of the taunts and announced he would be banned from the BYU campus and sports events for life (he was not a student) it was on the front page of the sports section.

I was amazed that BYU has its own television network with not only sports events on it but movies and TV series. They advertise them as all being upbeat, positive portrayal of humanity. They must have 50 or more shows.
And there are also a lot of reports that are coming out that this was total made up by duke player.
zero evidence, zero fans or security, or ushers monitoring heard anything, scapegoat guy

Any bets on where this goes next? I mean talk about guilty on all charges with zero thought of doing actual investigating first. As Twain said, a lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth gets it’s boots on. Lie or misguided by the Duke player, this stuff causes far more issues when nobody thinks about investigating first. Would be nice to hear an apology, instead of digging in deeper. South Carolina jumps into the issue by declining to play. Yet Duke basketball fans are saying some pretty personal and inappropriate things to opposing players.
a few years ago they chanted how’s your grandma to a player who just lost his grandmother less than a week before the game. BYU didn’t handle it properly either. In soccer, racism is absolutely legit with real video and audio evidence. This has none of that.

I only know what was posted in that twitter thread. But it appears it was the girl’s grandmother who is maybe a politician who brought this all on? No one is saying the player didn’t hear something. But this reminds me of that baseball game recently where the man was yelling to the mascot by name (I think) , and it was mistaken as a racial slur. But no one in the BYU arena heard anything at any time when the grandmother said it happened on every serve. Minority athletes and students said they heard nothing. Just unfortunate every way you slice it.

Zero audio or video evidence and zero from black athletes hearing it in stands. This accusation got legs fast and painted a very negative image of BYU and started to bring religion into it. Doesn’t help when pro athletes with large reach push this story as fact causing millions to jump into it and taking it all as fact.

Please tell me Lebron James didn’t prematurely post the guys name on Twitter like he did the cop who actually saved that girls life in that stabbing incident.

also Jussie Smollette was in the BYU gym subway and he said he heard something.

early in my life I worked for a Mormon man and woman. They were the kindest and most charitable people I’ve ever met. That’s my perception of the religion. That and they don’t drink coffee and alcohol. Lol.

The human in me wants to believe that it was just a misunderstanding.

But when are journalists going to start following the laws of journalism and get the facts before running with stories? If they had asked a few more questions and waited for the video and audio footage from the match this would have been avoided.

if people would be punished and fired, instead of rewarded for clicks received, these things would rarely happen.

So, the same crowd that probably said George Floyd choked himself to death and the police did nothing wrong now is ready to tar and feather a black volleyball player for allegedly making up the claim that she was racially taunted each time she served during the volleyball match between Duke and BYU.

Let’s look at those claims:

First, that no one else, including her teammates, heard anything. Here they are repeating a claim by a MAGA, anti-woke group on the BYU campus, which fails to identify anyone who actually says no taunts were made but instead relies on “anonymous sources”. However, according to the North Carolina newspapers, multiple players on the Duke team confirmed hearing at least some of the taunts.

Second, that the claim was made up by the player after the match. However, it is undisputed that the Duke coach says she told the BYU coach about it after the second set. The BYU coach said it was after the third set, but doesn’t deny being told about it. A campus policeman was sent to the area next to the Duke bench in the 4th set and reportedly has said he didn’t hear anything. So much for her making up the story after the match.

Third, which brings up another point: Have any of you actually seen a volleyball match? Do you know where the benches are in relation to the area where a player serves from? They are a good 20 to 25 yards away, depending on where the player stands to start her serve. There were 5,700 people in the stands that night. It was loud, as anyone who watched the BYU and Pitt match could tell you. And anyone is surprised the coaches, the BYU players (who were even farther away) and some 50-something campus security guard probably with lousy hearing didn’t hear the taunts. Remember those taunts were coming from the stands or standing room area behind the server, not behind the bench. Please.

Fourth, that the fan who was identified and banned from further events on the campus is a scapegoat who didn’t do anything. The fan, who is a student at Utah Valley college, did deny being the one making the taunts, but he didn’t deny hearing the taunts. Further, he did admit being the person who came up to the volleyball player after the match concluded, got in her face and warned her to “watch your back.” His explanation is that he thought she was a friend of his who was a volleyball player at his school. Lets just say that claim is a little lacking in reality, but undoubtedly will be embraced as absolute truth by Charlie Kirk and Ben Shapiro, who are identified by the BYU MAGA group as two heroes of their anti-woke movement.

Videos of the crowd which have been collected by BYU officials indicate that although he was the one who came up to her after the game, he was not the one taunting her, as he isn’t seen shouting while she was serving during the parts of the match they have videos of. He was identified by Duke players, likely because of his post-game conduct which made his face the one imprinted in their memories. BYU apparently has decided that conduct still is worthy of the ban he received.

Fifth, someone implied that because the two Mormons he has known in his life are the sweetest people ever, Mormons couldn’t possibly have done this. That’s the same Mormon church which did not accept black people as members until the 1980s I believe. I have known many more than two Mormons. In fact, I dated a Mormon woman who now lives in Phoenix from 2008 to 2014, when I met Masha. I know her family and friends, which is a large group. I spent parts of two Christmas vacations with them in Utah, where the family goes every Christmas. Her brother played college basketball at Weber State. He was the point guard and only white starter. His teammates nicknamed him White Lightning. He and his wife went to Puerto Vallarta with us one year. I emailed him yesterday to ask him whether he thought this really happened. His reply, summarized: ‘Very likely. We (Mormons) are no better than any other religion on racism and worse than most. When I played basketball, many of my friends couldn't imagine that I could use the same locker room and shower as my teammates. I’m not saying that it definitely was a Mormon because BYU has other fans too, but it wouldn’t surprise me. And, remember that there are a lot of “fallen” Mormons who drink. None of us are saints.’

Mike that was me. And the point I was trying to make is that for you or anyone else to say Mormons are capable of such hatred is doing exactly the same thing we are trying to eliminate from society. There is no room for bigotry and racism toward any group. Period. And in this case, all we have is an autistic special needs individual who is now banned from BYU events when there is no proof of anything. And we have people saying “of course it happened, they’re Mormons!” It’s disappointing to hear such talk.

As far as the accusations, if you read the entire twitter thread I posted above, it was fairly and thoroughly broken down piece by piece by piece…and when the taunting and slurs were said to have escalated, security, rushers and administration were embedded in the areas where the slurs were alleged to be coming from in set 3 til the end of the match and nothing was heard. I strongly encourage you to read it because to this point the whole thing is regrettable.

Well this thread has devolved.
Not really. Pitt played BYU at BYU right around the same time Duke played them. South Carolina refuses to play them. BYU is a top level team that may now find itself dealing with a situation that may be proven to be completely false. But it shows you what social media and lack of journalistic integrity can do to sports. Not one single news outlet took the time to do journalism and dig into facts. That is the problem and it may cause ramifications for rankings, games, and now a lifetime ban for a fan. And the players family member hates white people. So it adds to the complexity when a race hater and nba player push this narrative to millions. And what happens, guilty because social media lacks integrity. Period. These types of events have the potential for significant social issues because of the rush to judgement and the belief that something is real due to easy narratives wanting to be pushed.

Nice try. The racist is actually the Duke players family member. But nice try calling us racist when all we simply stated is too many jumped into this with zero evidence other than what the player said. Now that audio, video, security, and black athletes in the stands prove otherwise on what was supposedly said. That’s not racist on our part, it’s called waiting to pass judgement. Wait for facts, wait for investigation, and most importantly wait for time to pass. Lebron chose to not wait, and many others accepted his word and others before any facts came forward. Now, how is this racist? Go ahead, please explain where you can identify racism in our posts. But go ahead and read the Family members Twitter posts and see who the racist is.

You are exactly what’s wrong with this country. When you don’t like something, you accuse people of being an “ist” or an “ism”. What does that do for civility? I’d like to think you can be better than that. There is nothing going on here in this case other than pointing out that this situation looks like another rush to judgement.

While this does involve race, it’s simply more about facts and if this were argued in a court of law right now, which argument would win out?? This isn’t hard. At this point in time it’s looking more like a Jussie Smollette situation than not. Discussing it doesn’t make one racist. But demonizing an entire religion because of it is bigoted. I used to defend Muslims for the same thing when people came at them. I simply want people to get along. I expect more. But others want unrest. And it’s easy to see what you want.

As part of our commitment to take any claims of racism seriously, BYU has completed its investigation into the allegation that racial heckling and slurs took place at the Duke vs. BYU women’s volleyball match on August 26. We reviewed all available video and audio recordings, including security footage and raw footage from all camera angles taken by BYUtv of the match, with broadcasting audio removed (to ensure that the noise from the stands could be heard more clearly). We also reached out to more than 50 individuals who attended the event: Duke athletic department personnel and student-athletes, BYU athletic department personnel and student-athletes, event security and management and fans who were in the arena that evening, including many of the fans in the on-court student section.

From our extensive review, we have not found any evidence to corroborate the allegation that fans engaged in racial heckling or uttered racial slurs at the event. As we stated earlier, we would not tolerate any conduct that would make a student-athlete feel unsafe. That is the reason for our immediate response and our thorough investigation.

As a result of our investigation, we have lifted the ban on the fan who was identified as having uttered racial slurs during the match. We have not found any evidence that that individual engaged in such an activity. BYU sincerely apologizes to that fan for any hardship the ban has caused.

Our fight is against racism, not against any individual or any institution. Each person impacted has strong feelings and experiences, which we honor, and we encourage others to show similar civility and respect. We remain committed to rooting out racism wherever it is found. We hope we can all join together in that important fight.

There will be some who assume we are being selective in our review. To the contrary, we have tried to be as thorough as possible in our investigation, and we renew our invitation for anyone with evidence contrary to our findings to come forward and share it.

Despite being unable to find supporting evidence of racial slurs in the many recordings and interviews, we hope that all those involved will understand our sincere efforts to ensure that all student-athletes competing at BYU feel safe. As stated by Athletics Director Tom Holmoe, BYU and BYU Athletics are committed to zero-tolerance of racism, and we strive to provide a positive experience for everyone who attends our athletic events, including student-athletes, coaches and fans, where they are valued and respected.
