We had 177 yards

Whipple does it. He has done it everywhere he has been with every QB he has had. In the pros it is not necessary because of the radios in helmets.

That’s a whopping half of what the mediocre VT D gives up per game.

And of course we were shut out.

When I saw what we did with our first red zone possession, I knew there was no way we’d win this game.

pitiful

It’s not necessary at the other 137 D1 football programs either, because everyone else has a system for getting their plays in.

I don’t really think it’s a big deal, but it’s pretty antiquated and it prevents the use of tempo and playing fast.

The really odd thing about this system is that we are getting plays off much faster this year than we did last year. This year most of the time we are at the line ready to run the play with 20 or more seconds on the play clock. Last year we basically never broke the huddle until there were less than 20 seconds on the play clock.

Should be a duzzy (no pun intended) next week offensively. Pitt had 177 yards vs VT and BC had 191 vs ND. But the BC defense usually gives up almost 500 yards every game (ND had 501). But rain showers are in the early forecast and KP doesn't look like much of a waterboarder.

That’s totally true-and it is odd. I think Whipple is probably more scripted with his calls than Watson was.

Could our wide receivers have help a little bit last night. Just a few less drops and we are in the game. And kick the damn field goal.

How can a beast like Matthews not get something in the first half. He’s a big dude and can probably catch at least one or two. We had butterfingers Mack last night. Reminded me of the WR in the replacements who could run the best routes but couldn’t catch a cold naked in the arctic.

Well then there’s the answer... at least with Pickett it’s much easier to get in the call using this run back n forth....

When Pitt wins no one cares how the player gets the call

I don’t want to start adding in delay of game penalties on top of all the other mistakes and I don’t honestly care what the announcers have to say about it either

I think he may be more scripted, but it might also be partly due to him actually thinking about the next call before we run the first play. That was always one of my complaints about Walt Harris' play calling, that he never even thought about what he might do on second down until after the first down play was over. So we'd throw an incomplete pass on first down and Harris would be like "second and ten, my god, how did that happen, what are we going to do now?" And we'd waste 15 or 20 seconds while he tried to figure it out.

I don't know, but maybe Whipple is actually thinking about what he's going to do next before "next" happens. Maybe he has in mind "if this first down pass is incomplete, or only gains two yards, on the next play we are going to run this." So by the time that Pickett gets to the sideline he already knows what play he's calling.
