1. Inconsistent offensive play calling:
(a) Why in the heck do we turn the ball over to DiNucci's arm with 3 and a half minutes to go and have him drop back 10-12 yards to throw a deep pattern? We're running the ball well and we didn't want to score too quickly anyways. Game was over on that 1st down sack.
(b) Repeatedly on 2nd/short and 3rd/short, over the course of the season, we line up in an I-formation and run a deep handoff off-tackle. That is the exact first look the defense is running. I would wager that we average a loss of 2.5 yards per play on this down/distance/formation. It drives me NUTS.
(c) We still occasionally, although not as many times as early in the season, fake the ball in one direction, and then run the ball or throw a screen in the same direction----this makes NO sense. Canada never did this. We fake right and then shovel pass right or we fake sweep left and then screen left. You're actually helping the defense with the fake because you just shifted the LBs and S to the point of attack. Fakes are not for fakes sake. Fakes are to move def away from point of attack.
(d) DiNucci is a great backup. He is not a starter. He better not be the starter for both of the remaining games. He is not decisive. He is not consistent. I think he could be serviceable with better play calling but don't put the game in his hands when our backs are averaging over 5 yds a carry and we have their front four on their heels.
(e) Why no special plays for Whitehead? Did we think we were that much better? Unbelievable. Win the game you are playing.
Its not just a Watson thing. When HCPN watches the film, surely he sees these inconsistencies. But yet there is no change. This is not just execution and talent, although we clearly have our problems their as well.
2. Defense: Why was Whitehead playing so passively? He was 2 yards behind #82 on every route giving the underneath throw whether the route was 5 yards or 15 yards. It did not seem like we were using him offensively or defensively to his strengths.
We're now 10 games into the season. The issue of being a young team is no longer relevant when you are playing a 1-8 team.
Unbelievable. I'm teetering on apathy.
