at last Saturday's game??
All I can say is that, in my section (109) we were surrounded by quite a few Oklahoma State fans. That was okay from a social perspective because they were all very nice people, but it made me wonder where were all of the Pitt season ticket holders who are normally in those seats for home games. Now, I don't know most of the season ticket holders in my section by their name, but I do know the difference between a Pitt tee shirt and an Oklahoma State tee shirt. I'd say that at least 75% of those season ticket holders who sit in our row or a row in front or behind us, didn't attend the game. So I asked the Cowboys fans who were sitting around us how they got their tickets. Most of them said they bought them online from Pitt season ticket holders.
Pretty pathetic fan support for the city's only NCAA D-I FBS football program, a city that likes to claim that it has the best sports fans in the country.
I think not.

When you see three of the program's biggest supporters like Poker, TD and Souf littering the message boards during the game instead of sitting in the stands then you know things are truly hopeless.

It is because the game was at Noon.

This is a myth and always has been. This is a great Steelers town (to a degree). We are not a great sports town. It seems like that because the Steelers and Pens win a lot so they have full attendance. When they suck there attendance even sucks but the Steelers will at least have their tickets sold. In the early/mid 2000's when the Pen's sucked for a 3-4 they had less than 10,000 at most games. Pittsburgh is a front runner city. Always has been always will be.

There are many season ticket holders who buy more tickets than they use or can give away and rely on Pitt fans using them.
I was in one set of tickets that have on the Pitt side (less sun) and sold my tickets on the visitors side ( which I prefer for 3:30 pm or night starts). My seats in 111 were occupied by OSU fans. So what? Pitt is happy to have me buy more tickets than I can use.
If I didn't sell them to somebody attendance would have been worse.
Why don't you buy more tickets and write a bigger check, too???

Yeah, that's a dead giveaway. They are among a group of many other regular posters that do the same. That in and of itself is one thing. Although it's not something a lot of folks that do go to the games would likely generally agree with, it can maybe at least be somewhat understood why someone that wants to mock Pitt may choose to play the role of absentee fan and do that sort of nonsense.

But when those people that don't attend games/never intend to attend games whine, complain and ridicule Pitt about attendance, then that takes a helluva lot of gall. It's the height of hypocrisy and from my point of view, those that take that approach can go p!$$ up a rope. Their moaning is meaningless because they are without question part of the problem.

Are the upper end zone sections corporate owned? Just asking cause my season tickets are in section 524 row N and there are at least 30-40 rows above us and we were the last ones in the section with no one around. I was really shocked we had no one above us. I usually get tickets in one of the end zone sections just because I like the view from there but can't remember not having anyone above me.

My Wife and Son attend all home games regardless of the outcome and when I look up and see my boy having a ball... awesome !

No. A lot of lowers are corporate-owned. There isnt enough demand to fill the higher-up endzone seats.

Yep, as I mentioned in another thread, it is a total myth that Pittsburgh fans are so great. Pirates drew 2.5 million fans in a 98 win season...brewers drew 2.5 million that same year in a 98 loss season that same year.

If the penguins ever suck again, get ready to see less than 10k at pens games. If the steelers ever have a year or two they go 8-8, you can essentially get free tickets as people dump those tickets.

The only thing is the Steelers will sell out even though people won't attend. The other teams will not sell a lot of tickets.

Yep. It would take decades of being bad for steelers ticket holders to give them up, but I went to a Monday night game against the Texans a couple years ago, I think the steelers were like 4-3 and looked very mediocre, and I got 20 dollar scalper tickets 2 hours before the game.

I think people do have more of a pro mentality in Pgh and once it becomes clear that no championship of any kind is forthcoming, fan interest shrinks significantly. This is a big reason why a big crowd didn't show in the games after Clemson.

One other point that some people forget: All Steelers fans aren't Pitt fans. The Steelers draw heavily from Ohio & West Virginia (Ohio State & WVU fans), other parts of Pennsylvania (Penn State fans), and of course, the Pittsburgh Metro area (mostly Pitt, but some UPS fans). The Steelers drawing well has practically zero impact on Pitt's attendance. It's an apples/oranges comparison.

There are simply too many seats for Pitt's fanbase. As a result, tickets are cheap and not considered a hot item.

It's really this simple.

I don't know how many more years of playing at Heinz Field will be required before Pitt realizes that eliminating seats via tarping is the best option. It is not ideal (we know the ideal) but it's better than seeing a bunch of scattered yellow seats for all but one game every season.

There are some corporate owned, not 20,000. Fact is the seats are sold and people don't use them. I struggle enough filling my seats, and if I can't use them it's hard to even give them away.

It's what happens when tickets are cheap and the product is mediocre.

Not 20K but I bet at least 5K lowers are corporate-owned and 4500 of them are no-showing for just about every game adding to the yellow-out
