Why did Penn State steal Marshall's motto?

I posted the OP, so let me add after reading through a lot of it.

First off, again...."WE ARE" is hardly original, like someone said, if you have a two syllable team name or school, it is an easy cheer. But I just saw WE ARE MARSHALL, on the tele again a few days ago, and thought about this. The crashed happened in 1970. The "WE ARE" stuff happened in 1971. I am almost....ahem, well, 50. So I have been around awhile. All through the 70's and even into the 80's, never really heard this as the definitive PSU chant until the last 20-25 years. But it has become more than a chant, it is a declaration. Which is a difference. I will go into that more in a moment.

As for USC, I thought there thing was "Fight On". That is their Fight song. Like Hail To Pitt, "Fight On, for old SC!". As for the "We Are" stuff, again...it is usually defined by that declaration and then the school. Hence, "WE ARE.........MARSHALL". Someone posted it is no different than the "Let's Go"........followed by team name and I disagree. For example, WVU's is a sing song, "Let's Go...Mountaineers" They don't have all of these Hoopies signing off everything or tweets with #Let's Go". It is not their's, without the Mountaineer part.

#We Are. PSU fans, Penn Staters, think that is their's, Then the arrogance continues on so many levels with "WE ARE...THE BEST". Really? The best at what? Best of who? We Are Unrivaled. Again, really? And in this case, that is largely true, and it is not based on Penn State's status, but because no one in the B1G would consider them their #1 rival. Well maybe except Rutgers. But it is that whole, "WE ARE.....THE BEST" crap that makes people hate you.

It is okay to have pride. But they have this cult like devotion that makes them the Scientologists of the college sports, hell the sports world. But it is more than sports, it is even more than that college, it is that town. They have made J. Vincent Paterno into L. Ron Hubbard. People like Thomas Lubrano are their David Miscaviage and Franco into their Tom Cruise. WE ARE...BETTER! Take THON, on the surface it is a great thing. But Penn State turns this into another "WE ARE BETTER" crap than everyone else. WE ARE...BETTER. My Pitt response is...WE DID CURE POLIO! (mic drop) Bitch!

I know this sounds overdramatic, but all they can do is focus on how many white people they can gather into parking lots and Beaver Stadium as some sort of cultish ritual to show how "BETTER" they are than everyone. How much "better" are you when you define everything by how many people go to a flippin' football game? That makes you "better"?

I have friends and coworkers that are Penn State grads, and while I like them, there is something "off" about them in many cases. It is that "WE ARE" mentality, like they are god's chosen ones. It is pretty creepy. And like Scientologists, we see what happens when people try and open the drapes and look behind the curtain. WE ARE!

For these past few decades Pitt fans have had this shoved down our throats, from Nitcentric media who were no doubt either part of the cult, or just bedazzled by J. Vincent Paterno. Success With Honor was their Dianetics. Meanwhile as we all now know, and in like most devout and closely held groups, all was not what it appears.

Back to the point. It is okay to cheer and root for your team. It is okay to be proud of your school. But PENN STATE ESPECIALLY, have a little god damn humility. It tends to go a long ways to help people sympathize and try and understand you guys.

One of you best post ever and that is a compliment because you have given many! Big time LLE from you today, thanks!

1960s: "SC . . . WE ARE , , , SC , , , WE ARE: . Surely those old games and the sound tracks thereof are preserved on Youtube or something similar. It's not unheard of for a school to have a chant other than (or in addition to) its fight song lyrics. (Yes, "Fight On" is USC's fight song.) I think State Farm has a couple of different fight songs . . . but to the best of my knowledge, "WE ARE" isn't found in the lyrics of either.

Well done...one of the best explanations of The Penn St (undeserved) arrogance I've seen on this site.

Golf clap.

Yep, USC does it.

And my high school (De La Salle up in Detroit, MI) did a "We are .... La Salle" chant when I was there.

So, we have:

"WE ARE ...... MAR-SHALL!"

"WE ARE ....... S C!"

"WE ARE ....... PENN STATE!"

"WE ARE ........ LA SALLE!"

It's just functionality. If you're school can easily be recognized via two short syllables, the "WE ARE .... X X!!!" chant works and flows very well.
Pitt IS It

Owtie, that was brilliant.

That is exactly how they are. And they just can't see it themselves.

Even when they do good things, like THON, it seems more done out of a "look at me" self promotion than it is raising money for pediatric cancer. Everything reeks of "we are better than you". I saw someone from their rivals site today tweeted today that the kicker that actually commited to them wants to be part of the "best special teams in college football".

It is always superlatives, like I said, it is very much cult like. It is programmed, not just into PSU grads, but especially central PA residents. Like I said I relayed a story about a coworker who was impressed that he was accepted at Penn State main. Like it was some kind of badge of honor. The guy graduated from Annapolis! He is from St. Mary's, but to those people PSU is on that level. It is frightening.

I have a friend who has a kid that goes to PoSU. He was telling me on their visit up there people walk by you and say "We Are", and you are supposed to reply with "penn state." They take pride to a whole other level. That would drive me nuts, I haven't heard anything like that outside of military basic training. That in itself is brainwashing.

You post keep getting better and spot on about that school at the east of Pitt and pretends no other Program matters? Big Pretenders fed wrong Orientation from Day One? Hard to respect realities when one chooses to promote myths and miracles created by preferred Public Relations over a True Mission to Educate, Promote and Not Bring Shame to Penn State Name?

Shading the Truth, or outright Lying to one Students on Day One, makes New Nittany Liars not Nittany Lions?

It is this kind of Actions of using Ignorance from above that causes Beliefs if Arrogance below and causes a Victim hood of Cover Ups blaming each other later, and why changing that kind of Penn State Culture is not any easier than changes that had to made in Japan & Germany after WWII, Catholic Church Scandals known since 1976, and Arab States today!

Truth builds Character not Slogans such Success With Honor! Success can happen without Honor but that kind never lasts once the Truth shows how it was misused!

The Best & Brightest at Penn State have to be brave and stand up to those that believe in yesterday's misdeeds built on myths and misused machinations against competitors for one man's ego in spite of superb coaching!

Whether it is a Emperors, Dictators, Popes, Prophets or Football Coach what is easy to justify and win may unite for a while, but one reason why Free Speech will sooner later show that the eventual Truth can greatly mislead and cause confusion later, even in pursuit a better goal, that goal's values are lost without the full truths?

Great Post again, Owtie, you are on a roll!

There are actually a lot of things unique to Penn State:

effeminate guys who ironically call everything they don't like 'gay'

extreme grade inflation to keep the dummy crowd from failing out so they can profit off of em

60 branch campuses with lower admissions standards than the community colleges

jabronies who wear golf gear when they're not golfing ("Where's my Titleist hat, honey? It tells people 'Hi, my name is Frank. Frank golfs.'"

The only school that's sponsored by Tommy Bahama because PSU fans keep them in business

People with garden gnomes and owls carved outa tree trunks in their yards

Posters who use pics of 10 yr old 3 Series BMWs as their sig pics.

Families who dress the same, which is pretty much straight out of Hitchcock's nightmares (funny story about that for another time).
