With Clairton and Central Valley having byes to the state semis, and 2A and 5A playing Saturday at Norwin, why didnt they just have the 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A championships this Saturday at Heinz while 4A and 6A could have played somewhere else on 11/16? I know they said there werent enough playoff worthy teams in 1A but who cares if they could have expanded the 1A and 3A playoffs and had 4 games at Heinz next week.

1) Don't know.
2) Don't care.
3) Wrong Forum.

The girls state field hockey championship was decided on a penalty shot.

Teams like Laurel (8-2), Chartiers-Houston (7-3), Springdale (6-4), and Leechburg (5-5) all should've made the playoffs.

Yea, that's my point. I thought there were only 3 WPIAL champs that got byes to the state semis and they just eliminated a round of 1A so they could get 4 games there. But they also eliminated a round of 3A. So they could have done 4 games next week and had 4A and 6A play somewhere else. In theory, those teams would be the least deserving to play at Heinz anyway since they have the fewest amount of teams in their class.

If I'm a coach, I don't want a bye week heading into a championship game. I think the more practical reason is they can use away games for Pitt and the Steelers to get the turf replaced and give it an extra week to settle in before the double header over Thanksgiving weekend.

I believe this is a PIAA issue and not a wpial one. PIAA wanted to reduce the total games to 15 instead of 16.

The notion that a 5-5 team or even a 6-4 team "should have" made the playoffs is laughable. The WPIAL already lets far, far too many team into the playoffs as it is. They ought to be looking at ways to reduce the number of teams, not add to them.

I agree.

I hate being only 40 and being that guy saying "back in my day" , but I must in this situation. Back then the numbers worked perfectly that all 4 classes had 4 conferences of 7 or 8 teams per conference. Top 2 teams in each conference made the playoffs my Fr and So year and top 3 teams of my Jr and Sr year made playoffs with top team getting a bye week.

Disclosure: I am very bored and I can't sleep right now.

1994 and 1995 season:

Roughly 25-26% of teams made the playoffs. Couldn't find any more data than that. Guessing because the internet was in its infancy the WPIAL never entered said information but I know only 8 teams per class made playoffs and there were 30-32 teams per class.

1996- Again no actual data other than it shared the same cycle as 1997 so number of teams in each conference and number of qualifiers are the same. Therefore % of teams making playoffs is the same. It was the 1st year of 3 teams per conference making it to the playoffs.

1997 season:

4A= 36% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 4-6 with 1 team without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records didn't make playoffs: 3.

3A= 39% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 4-6 with 1 team without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records didn't make playoffs: 5 including an 8-2 team.

2A= 42% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 5-5 with 2 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records didn't make playoffs: 3.

1A= 37% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 5-5 with 2 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records didn't make playoffs: 5.

2019 season:

6A- 66% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 4-6 with 2 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records that didn't make playoffs: 0.

5A- 69% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 4-6 with 5 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records that didn't make playoffs: 0.

4A- 50% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 5-5 with 3 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records that didn't make playoffs: 1.

3A- 47% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 4-5 with 5 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records that didn't make playoffs: 2.

2A- 50% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 5-4 with 3 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records that didn't make playoffs: 2.

1A- 34% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record 7-3: with 0 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records that didn't make playoffs: 3.

1997 All Classes
Roughly 36-42% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 4-6 with 6 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records didn't make playoffs: 1
6

2019 All Classes
Roughly 34-69% of teams made the playoffs. Worst playoff team record: 4-6 with 18 teams without winning record making playoffs. Number of teams with winning records didn't make playoffs: 8

So comparing back then to today, it is no comparison. Too much mediocrity is being rewarded today. Only 1A has anything close to the competition of back then. I agree, they need to limit in every class but 1A.

That was my point. WPIAL 1A had the most parity this past year.

And I would argue it is the only class that made any sense. The rest are overkill with the amount of teams who made playoffs.

In determining a champion, yes they are overkill but its 1 extra game for the kids. I didnt realize the WPIAL 3A champ was placed into the PIAA semis. They should have done a 16 team bracket for 1A and 3A and played 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A at Heinz this weekend. However, its possible the Rooney's told them if they want Heinz, they have to do mid-November so they can get the turf replaced. That sucks for the 2A and 5A players who had to navigate a tougher path to get to the final.

They re-sod the field after WPIAL playoffs. They need the time to do it correctly before next weekend when Pitt BC and Steelers Browns come to town. Thus no games this coming weekend at Heinz.
