Holstein vs SMU

The problem is teams are thinning out the box except for the spy basically.

There’s nothing particularly “genius” about Bell’s system. It’s somewhat like Heupel’s. You spread the field and force teams to play one thing, and then you attack the other.

The Veer and shoot traditionally struggles when it can’t attack the other thing because it doesn’t have the talent. When the thinned out box calls for run, but the OL still can’t get a push.

That’s what is happening right now for Holstein and Bell.

Syracuse has 3 DL. A MLB. That’s the box.
There is no genius play calling in terms of that to do here. You take advantage of the thinned out box and run over them. Instead the run goes nowhere.

That’s the problem right now. Teams are thinning out the box, leaving one guy to spy. Dropping everybody else. Daring Pitt to run over them. The OL can’t get any push. Holstein can’t run because of the spy. And so he’s forced to try to find the limited throwing lanes.

And the results haven’t been good offensively the last couple of weeks.

OL just can’t get pushed around by a 3 man front. And a bad one at that.

Pitt's line blocked well on that particular play. That's a 3 high safety look firing to the ball as soon as it's handed off. That's a play where you hope your back would find a way to make a little more out of it than Hammond did here.

Man do I hate when teams try to play down like that. Happens in every sport. Everyone wants to play in the least competitive league they can find. I am the exact opposite. I would be embarrassed as hell beating 1A schools like that. So you beat Brentwood? So what. I'd rather lose to NA.
Hahaha…you would absolutely love what the Butler varsity football program has been doing. A 6A school playing an independent schedule and still getting their teeth kicked in by A and AA schools. What a joke.

I don't know if that's them not getting a push, though. That safety flew up from 11 yards off the LOS. I would think that's on the back to make him miss and they would probably sign up for that matchup most times.

Our O is definitely off, though. Last game was so weird that I almost don't remember a single play for us on offense, but it does seem like teams have kind of pushed back on Holstein's tendencies a bit. I definitely don't remember anyone getting behind the secondary down the sideline the last two games, which produced some big plays for us early in the season.

It's funny, because I actually think Yarnell is so different (can see over the LOS better and utilize the middle of the field better, has better touch on short passes, etc.) that he probably could give a team preparing for Holstein trouble. With as bad as our line is, though, it likely wouldn't be worth the tradeoff of him not being able to run or escape pressure.

We also need the check down to Reid or designed pass plays to Reid.
