Knee jerk thoughts….

*Fitzsimmons, James, Matlack and Edwards should be the starters going forward. Fitzsimmons is a player.

*O’Brien’s nickname should be toast, torch, or Smokey…

*What can you say about Holstein? His maturity is off the charts. We need to create a Go Fund Me page to keep his services.

*I would like Pitt to use Daniel Carter more. He can wear the defense down a little more especially late in the game.

*Pitt relies too much on blitzing to put pressure on the QB. Need to get better.

*Biles and Louis might be the best pair is linebackers Pitt has had in a long time. Both were low recruited.

Cal Football

I’m in San Francisco and am amazed about the amount of positive tv news coverage Cal is getting in light of the ESPN crew being here for the Cal -Miami game. There is also a lot of pro ACC discussion.

Adding Cal and Stanford to the ACC helps the new and old ACC schools. I’m confident there will be applications to ACC schools from people who would have never considered it pre merger. I also think for the eastern schools and players, a western trip every year or so will only enhance their college experience.

I’m looking forward to watching this game after the Pitt win tomorrow. If I can get tickets, maybe I’ll attend in person. I work with a lot of Berkeley people and would like to see them get a win even if against the school of several nieces and nephews.

OT: James Madison

None of my buddies from college were surprised JMU beat UNC.

James Madison head coach Bob Chesney (1st year) is one the best young up and coming coaches out there. He was a finalist for the Syracuse job and I'm glad he didn't get it because there is a good chance he would of made them an ACC contender pretty quickly. I don't doubt the Syracuse coach they ultimately hired (from Georgia) is a better recruiter but he has no head coaching experience. Maybe he ends up being a decent coach but who knows. Assistant coach hires seem like such a crap shoot.

13 players from James Madison followed Curt Cignetti to Indiana. So even though James Madison had a really good team and staff last year they are almost all gone. Despite this, I (and most of my college buddies) fully anticipated JMU either beating UNC or giving them a really tough game (despite the talent disparity). Chesney proved at his previous spot (Holy Cross/FCS level, partial scholarships) to be able to consistently beat or almost beat FBS schools each year he was there. And now that he has even better talent at the FBS level, he is even better equipped to punch up in weight against power 5 schools.

Also, the JMU QB (Alonzo Barnett) is a first year starter but he is really good. Equally good runner and passer. Fits perfectly with the offense style Chesney has run. He's a tad short (listed at 6'0 but he's more like 5'10) or otherwise he's probably playing at a power 5 school.

All this said, I don't think the UNC loss to JMU is as bad as it looks. Maybe giving up 70 was, but anyone who's followed Chesney's career expected them to compete or beat UNC.

I think the key for Pitt against UNC is Holstein taking care of the football and making enough big plays to win. UNC is going to get yards and score.

Sincerely

Some huge moments by our guys named Sincere today. Sincere Lee’s catches on pivotal 3rd downs and Sincere Edwards with a great job on the last stand in the 4th Q.

Have a feeling that the D will continue to improve and for the O the sky is legit the limit. Holstein was masterful (again) in that 4th quarter…..just forget about that can of corn he threw that should have been picked lol.

Oh and watch Des on that play, he literally cuts down a UNC DT, gets up and starts drifting to the goal line and then comes back and tips the ball so that the UNC DB doesn’t make the catch. I’ve watched a lot of football but idk if I can remember a sequence where the same player blocks a defensive lineman and breaks up a pass against a defensive back down the field on the same play.

Proposed College Football Super League

"College Sports Tomorrow, which is a group of executives and administrators, has proposed streamlining college football into a “Super League” called the College Student Football League (CSFL). Details of the plan have been in the works for months, but were unveiled by the group on Tuesday."
