Mike Tomlin gives a great Pitt sound bite

At the weekly press conference Tomlin addressed KP's moxie and game winning drive ability by stating (and I'm slightly paraphrasing): We expected it. This is nothing new to people of western Pennsylvania. We saw him do it next door. When it happens next door is is less intangible. You can feel it.

Cha-ching!

Hartman to Notre Dame

It's been rumored for a while, looks like Hartman to ND is happening.

From a Pitt perspective, this an 'OK' event:

Wake becomes a lot more beatable for us next year without him. I'd like to think we beat WF either way, but them not having a veteran, talented QB like him should allow our overall talent advantage to factor more in the game (a stud QB really masks a lot of things). So just looking at the WF game, this is a plus event for Pitt.

But, since we also play Notre Dame next year, it's more of a 'meh' event. Notre Dame was always going to be a tougher game than Wake and now Hartman makes them way tougher than there other current QBs would. However, given the types of QBs ND could have drawn, I'd say this is not a negative event for Pitt vs ND, more of a neutral event. Hartman is a very good college QB, but we know him well, he is not a dual threat, and may not put up the same numbers outside of Wake's mesh offense. It will be a challenging game for sure, but Hartman leading ND does not seem like an impossible task.

Recruiting Update Pitt making contact with a transfer tight end

Maryland tight end CJ Dippre went into the transfer portal four days ago, and he tells me Pitt is one of the schools that reached out to him.

Dippre, a three-star prospect in the class of 2021 who committed to Maryland over a host of offers including Pitt, played in every game over the last two seasons and recorded 33 receptions for 339 yards and 3 touchdowns, with most of that - 30 catches, 314 yards, 3 TDs - coming this season. Two of his three touchdowns in 2022 came against Michigan and Ohio State, and he had 7 catches for 79 yards and 2 TDs in those two games combined.

Dippre visited Pitt a bunch of times during his recruitment, including a prospect camp before his junior year, the Miami football game in 2019 and the basketball team's win over North Carolina in January 2020. The Panthers offered him after that, but he picked Maryland a few months later and it seemed like Pitt was a little too late (although they did make his top schools before he committed).

We'll see what Pitt can do now. Obviously there are a lot of eyes on Gavin Bartholomew and whether or not he returns to Pitt; Dippre could be an addition to the position if the numbers start to dip.

He did have some memorable plays this season, like this one:

OT Jerry Kill and NMSU

Jerry Kill going into Las Cruces and winning seven football games and a bowl game this year, has to be one of the best coaching jobs in a long long time. I’ve always thought he’s done a very good job wherever he’s been, and his teams always run the football well. New Mexico State is one of the hardest division I programs to win at.

Pitt vs tO$U in 1988

For our younger Pitt fans. I was at this game. Watch how much talent Pitt had on both sides of the ball in 1988.

My guess, you'll watch this and be like what? Was this real? What happened?

Yes it was real. Instead of nurturing this and developing this Pitt's MORONIC ADMINISTRATION BLEW THIS UP. FIRING MIKE GOTTFRIED BEFORE THE BOWL GAME IN 1989 ( WHICH THEY WON, BEATING TEXAS A&M ). AFTER THE GAME MOST OF THE GREAT PLAYERS TRANSFERRED AND PITT WAS TERRIBLE FOR THE NEXT DECADE.

Pitt, run by the dumbest "smart people" to walk the face of the earth or our enemies.

Merry Christmas!

Few Thoughts

I was private messages his question . Here were my thoughts. I am curious your response.

I feel feel good about what we have going on. We have the shooters we haven’t had. Eliot is consistent. Where as a player like Horton could shoot but wasn’t consistent . I think Hinson is only showing flashes of what he can do and has a whole new level he will get to as he gains more confidence. I have been saying Nelly is the best true point guard I have seen in a while. He is like James Robinson but with a shot. Fede has really really impressed me. He could be Talib Zanna good by the time his is done.

I feel bad for Hugley. He must ne frustrated. He isn’t in shape at all. Plus we are using more offensive sets that don’t fit his game but do fit Fede’s. I would like to think we will see a better Hughley but I am not optimistic . I feel he same about Nike. I think he is overthinking it also isn’t totally healthy.

With Dior I don’t know why but he makes me nervous. He is more likely to be used to an open AAU style of game which doesn’t focus on ball movement and man to man defensive principles. Plus I worry if he will impact chemistry. With what he did with that woman it shows he is not mature and has problems with self control. And all the way back to Oklahoma one of Capel’s big weaknesses is managing tough personalities and the effect on team chemistry.

I am pleasantly surprised of where we are now. Really really need to see us with a winning ACC record and NIT bid. We have to capitalize with what we have now to gain some momentum.
