Week 6 ACC TV Schedule

Friday
9:00: FS1 - Syracuse @ #25 UNLV

Saturday
noon: ESPN - SMU @ #22 Louisville
noon: ESPN2 - Pitt @ North Carolina
noon: ACCN - Boston College @ Virginia
noon: CW - Wake Forest @ NC State
3:30: ACCN - Virginia Tech @ Stanford
7:00: ESPN - #15 Clemson @ Florida State
8:00: ACCN - Duke @ Georgia Tech
10:30: ESPN - #8 Miami @ California

- 4 noon games seems excessive. Seems like CW could have offered a different start time. Going to be hard for. A little surprised WVU @ Okie St got the mid-afternoon ESPN2 start over Pitt/UNC. Maybe they didnt want the 11AM local start but ESPN usually doesnt care about that. Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, and Tulsa kick at 11AM on Saturday. Air Force kicks at 10AM.

- Its weird how the ACC schedule works out. Pitt is the only team who hasnt played. FSU, at 1-3 is halfway complete.

- SMU/Lou should be a really good game. Wished that werent in the glut of noon games but its hard to get ESPN primetime with the SEC games....and of course Clem and FSU usually get first dibs of the ACC games.

- I think Stanford beats the 2nd worst coach in the ACC.

- Cristobal finally finds a way to lose one. He proved me wrong 2 weeks in a row. Cal has a Top 5 RB. They are legit. And we better be ready next week because our DL hasnt been good.

Pitt players on the Bucs

So Tampa Bay is one of my favorite side teams to watch because of the Pitt folks - Jordan Whitehead, SirVocea Dennis and Calijah Kancey. I also have grown to root a bit for the older, slightly more humbled version of Baker Mayfield.

That said, I’m starting to worry a bit about Kancey and Dennis. Both have received some very positive reviews, but both have also been injured for long spells over the first couple of years there.

Dennis was just placed back on IR and I wonder if his body just isn’t built for NFL MLB (or OLB) play. Kancey has been very disruptive when he does play…but that is unfortunately not regularly.

On the bright side, Jordan Whitehead seems to be quietly still going about having a very good NFL career. Never an all-Pro but always near the top of the team leader board in tackles.

Starkey

I was listening to the Joe Starkey show today on the Fan and Starkey and his side kick City Limits were going up to Pitt to take some serves from Olivia this afternoon. They kind of were thinking they could receive her serve. Starkey has no volleyball experience and City Limits said he play volleyball in high school.

I wonder if they have to sign a waiver? They could get seriously hurt. I expect a broken nose and/or a concussion.

They are supposed to post photos/videos of their adventure on the Fan website but I haven't seen anything posted yet.
I can't wait to see what happened.

Football Recruiting

I was just thinking about with Pitt starting 4-0 this season, last year was obviously a down year, but the two years prior to that combining for 20 wins, and we haven't really seen an uptick in recruiting. I can't remember the last 5 star that Pitt got. For some reason I'm thinking Shayne Hale who I believe ended up not playing much and eventually transferring. These winning seasons are great, but I can't help but think that unless they can turn these winning seasons into better recruiting, it will only be temporary until we get back to the 7-5, 6-6 norm that we have come to be used to most years. I think of college football in almost a tier-based system, and I think schools are sometimes given opportunities to move from one tier to another. I think if Pitt finishes this season 10-2 (prior to bowl, or possible ACC championship game) then you have to be able to really turn it into something in terms of high school recruits. Just a long form post here, but curious if there are any other Pitt fans that feel this way.

My questions that I don't know the answers to are: Potentially with rumors of Heather Lyke not buying into or giving a ton of thought into NIL if that may potentially be a reason? Is it Narduzzi? Facilities? Game atmosphere? etc?

Transfer tracker: 10/3/2024 - How Pitt's departed transfers did this week

Here's a rundown of how Pitt's departed scholarship transfers did in their most recent games.

Dayon Hayes (Colorado)
Samuel Okunlola (Colorado)

Hayes and Okunlola both started Colorado’s first two games, but in the win over Colorado State three weeks ago, Hayes started and Okunlola came off the bench. Two weeks ago, in the Buffaloes’ win over Baylor, the two former Pitt defensive ends reversed roles: Okunlola went back into the starting lineup and played 36 snaps, while Hayes worked as a reserve and played 28 snaps.

This past weekend, Colorado won at UCF 48-21 and Okunlola maintained his place in the starting lineup while playing 45 snaps. Okunlola recorded a team-high four pressures, four tackles and one tackle for loss.

Hayes did not make the trip to UCF due to injury.

DeAndre Jules (South Carolina)
Bangally Kamara (South Carolina)
Buddy Mack (South Carolina)

For the third time this season, Jules came off the bench as a reserve defensive tackle in South Carolina’s blowout win over Akron two weeks ago and played a season-low 14 snaps. He had one tackle.

Mack played two snaps on defense against Akron, while Kamara did not get on the field.

South Carolina was off this past weekend and will host Mississippi on Saturday.

Solomon DeShields (Texas A&M)
DeShields made his third appearance on defense and his first start of the season in Texas A&M’s win over Arkansas. He played a season-high 31 snaps and recorded two tackles and one pressure.

Karter Johnson (Florida A&M)
Antonio Camon (Florida A&M)

Johnson was targeted twice in Florida A&M’s loss to Troy two weeks ago, but he didn’t catch either of those two passes. On the season, he has eight receptions on 13 targets for 95 yards and a touchdown.

Camon did not get on the field against Troy.

FAMU was off this past weekend and will play at Alabama State on Saturday.

Byron Floyd (Buffalo)
Floyd continues to serve as Buffalo’s primary long-snapper.

Trey Andersen (Utah State)
Andersen logged four snaps on Utah State’s placekicking unit in the Aggies’ loss at Temple two weeks ago. That was his second appearance of the season. Utah State was off this past weekend and will play at Boise State on Saturday.

Christian Veilleux (Georgia State)
In his first game after leading a fourth-quarter comeback win over Vanderbilt, Veilleux struggled against Georgia Southern last weekend, throwing for 356 yards and two touchdowns but offsetting those scores with three interceptions. Both picks came late in the fourth quarter; one came on a throw into the end zone and led to a Georgia Southern touchdown, while the other came after Veilleux had led the offense into Georgia Southern territory.

In four games this season, Veilleux has thrown for 1,073 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 59.5% of his passes.

Israel Polk (Akron)
Polk only saw one target in Akron’s loss at Ohio last weekend. He caught the target for a seven-yard gain, but after averaging five targets per game in Akron’s first three games, Polk has been targeted just three times in the last two contests. He has caught nine passes for 55 yards this season.

Jahvante Royal (New Mexico)
Royal played three snaps on special teams in New Mexico’s opener but has not appeared in any games since then.

Stephon Hall (Youngstown State)
Hall has started every game for Youngstown State this season and logged 40+ snaps in four of the Penguins’ five contests. He is tied for fourth on YSU’s defense with 16 tackles, and he also has one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery.

Aydin Henningham (Albany State)
Henningham continues to be a key cog in Albany State’s defense, as he is starting at linebacker and is tied for the team lead in tackles with 15 and has one interception through four games far this season.

The Morning Pitt Mailbag: 10/4/2024 - Recruiting, the AD search and more

In this week's Morning Pitt Mailbag, we're taking questions on recruiting, the AD search, reporter etiquette and a lot more.

Video and transcript: Narduzzi on Hammond's return, UNC and more

Pat Narduzzi held his final press briefing of the week on Thursday and talked about Rodney Hammond's return, Pitt's game at UNC on Saturday and a lot more. Here's video and a full rundown of what he said.

I Give Hammond A Lot of Credit

Whatever the situation was with his suspension, I have to give him credit on how he carried himself throughout this time, at least on gameday. I am a season ticket holder and I have watched Hammond all season on the sideline and I know it has been talked about previously on this site, but to be looking at the spector of a season long suspension, and still come out in his jersey and be the first to congratulate his fellow RB's, the offense in general, sit on the bench while coaches are talking to the RB's. This young man deserves a lot of credit. I can honestly say, I am not sure I would have carried myself the same way. Now no one sees practice or the off time, but I would imagine he was a model teammate, or Narduzzi would not have had him on the sideline.

Maybe he knew, or suspected he would see the field this year, but just going on the fact it was announced he would be suspended for the full season, I have a lot of respect for #6!

Wild times out west

Memphis, Tulane, UTSA, and USF turn down P12.

UNLV and AFA turn down P12.

Utah State accepts P12.

UNLV and AFA, who were to get special financial incentives to stay in MWC now reconsidering that.

Gonzaga seems to be going to the P12 for everything but football, which they dont have.

Even seeing UConn as a potential all-sports member. Not sure how much sense that makes for either party but you could certainly make arguments that it would. UConn football would get a spot in what could be the 5th best football league and if Gonzaga joins, the basketball league could be better than the Big East, especially since those MWC know how to game the NET and get all their teams into the NCAA Tournament. Gonzaga, UConn, San Diego State and then NET gamers Utah St, Boise, and Colorado St make for a good hoops league.

Maybe the P12 could add Temple or UMass to give UConn a traveling partner or would that dilution make it not worth bringing in UConn?
