Guess the first touchdown: Pitt-North Carolina

Nobody called a Raphael Williams six-yard reception as Pitt's first touchdown against Youngstown State, so the contest is rolling on this week. Can you predict Pitt's first touchdown against North Carolina? Here's how to play:

Correctly guess the player, play (run, reception, return etc.) and yardage of Pitt's first touchdown against UNC and you will win three months added to your subscription. Post your guesses in this thread and good luck.

2015 Coaching Hires

I spent the week hanging with friends at the USC/Wisconsin game. The UW grads spent the week complaining (rightfully so) about the Luke Fickell hire. This was the 2nd week in a row where wisconsin just looked completely over-matched and out coached.

This got me thinking about Pitt's decision to hire Narduzzi in 2015. Other than Harbaugh going all rogue and cheating in ever imaginable way; Narduzzi had been the most successful hire in that cycle. So many of the "hot" names completely flamed out.

1. Jim Harbaugh (cheater)
2. Gary Andersen
3. Tom Herman
4. Chad Morris
5. Lance Leipold
6. Jim McElwain
7. Pat Narduzzi
8. Mike Riley
9. Paul Chryst
10. Mike Bobo

Former Pitt long term committ who flipped to Syracuse late after Syracuse hired FRAN Brown looked good last night rusning . strong back who coupled with Goff from the York area would have formes a solid duo of speed and power.. We are set pretty good at running back for next year but he would have been a solid back if we retained him.

VB: Pitt @ BC

Pitt dropped its first set of the year 23-25 in set 1 due to the BC block. Just insane how good their block was. Haggerty is monster.

Pitt just won set 2 25-7 on the back of Babcock aces. She currently has 10 through the two sets.

They didn't really need to in set 2 because of all the aces, but I hope Pitt comes out in set 3 and stops trying to power through all of these blocks. It's just not working.

It should also be noted that Fisher decided to start a bunch of bench players and it came back to bite him.

Is women's volleyball now a revenue sport at Pitt?

Got to thinking about this last night. I realize that tickets are cheap and volleyball doesn't directly generate TV revenue. But still, the Fieldhouse is sold out and a couple of games per year are at The Pete. I'm sure there is tournament money too. And I can't imagine that the program costs are that high. Travel is probably the biggest expense and then maybe room and board. (don't try to tell me that tuition cost a lot, it doesn't - the variable cost per scholarship is likely less than a couple grand)

So, my question is this: Does Pitt women's volleyball at least pay for itself? Does it make a small profit?

I don't want to turn this into a thread of people crapping on Olympic sports or trying to infer than I think volleyball pays all the athletic department's bills or any other crazy crap. I'm just curious to see if people think that it is at least paying for itself.

I've always thought that marketed properly that another sport or two could get close to paying for themselves. Maybe baseball? They play a top notch schedule for the most part. The weather is a problem though. Maybe soccer?

Key things to watch against UNC

Looking at UNC's offense, I see exactly the kind of offense Pat Narduzzi's defensive scheme is successful against. UNC has an innaccurate passer (57% completion percentage) and a running game averaging over 5 yards a carry. Pitt defense is #12 nationally only allowing 2.81ypr. Pitt defense will look to shut down the run, make UNC offense one-dimensional, and force Criswell into bad decisions. Despite the gaudy rushing stats for UNC, their OL isn't very good and gave up a ton of pressure to Duke and James Madison.

On the other side of the ball, UNC defense may be a bit better than the team that gave up 70 to James Madison. UNC is #14 nationally in 3rd down defense, but only averaging 1 turnover a game (only 1 INT for the year), so they want to force Pitt into a 3rd down situation to stop the offense. UNC is also #17 nationally in sacks whereas Pitt is #115 in sacks allowed, so protecting Eli and avoiding sacks on 1st and 2nd downs will be a big part of avoiding those 3rd down situations. Pitt's OL has been a bit banged up and trying to play through injuries, so having the week off hopefully gets the line healthy and back in shape.
