ACC rankings and game picks (10/17/2024)

Not a lot of movement this week with six teams off and no game outcomes that really moved the needle. Here's how I have the ACC ranked:

1. Miami (1)
2. Clemson (2)
3. Pitt (3)
4. SMU (4)
5. Louisville (5)
6. Syracuse (8)
7. Georgia Tech (7)
8. Duke (9)
9. Virginia (6)
10. Boston College (10)
11. Cal (11)
12. Virginia Tech (12)
13. Stanford (13)
14. North Carolina (14)
15. N.C. State (15)
16. Wake Forest (16)
17. Florida State (17)

Honestly, that bottom seven is pretty much just a mess.

Here are my game picks against the spread in the conference this week:

Boston College at Virginia Tech (-8) - Tonight
Florida State at Duke (-3) - Tomorrow night
Miami (-4.5) at Louisville
Virginia
at Clemson (-21.5)
Wake Forest at UConn (-2)
Notre Dame (-11.5) at Georgia Tech
N.C. State at Cal (-10)
SMU (-16.5) at Stanford

Let's see your rankings and picks.

Pitt / Syracuse Thursday 10/24 Fitz Bobblehead

This should help attendance on a Thursday , no ?
I have been to home games during the week before, and I think this is a good idea.

OT: OSU Outsmarted With Clock Management Trick

I think this is a first (in a big game anyway)… Oregon purposely added a 12th defender on a critical 3rd and long to both prevent Ohio St. from getting a big play but more importantly to do so while precious seconds came off the clock.

Click management is so frequently botched today that it’s a surprise to see a coach, ironically Mario Cristobal’s successor, use it to win a game.

ACC PM - Best TV Sports Program

I am officially a big fan of ACC PM. I record it and watch the 5 episodes each week whenever I have downtime.

The Monday episodes with Lugenbill are a great start to the week.

Morning Pitt & ACC PM are must watch/listen every day. I don’t regularly watch any ESPN or other network sports show anymore (and I watch/tape the ACC Huddle every Saturday too as it is often better than ESPN Gameday and the FS1 thing).

Mark Packer is a great asset for the ACC Network and the ACC (a much better Paul Finebaum alternative).

What are you watching on each week?

The Morning Pitt: 10/15/2024 - Is the arrow pointing up for Pitt's defense?

After a game-winning performance against Cal on Saturday, is Pitt's defense headed in the right direction? We think it might be - and it just might have already been going that way for the last few weeks. We're talking defense on today's Morning Pitt.

The master of word salad

Tomlinese

“We’ve been really good at times, but not to be confused with great,” Tomlin said. “We are trying to position ourselves to be that team. We have a player with talent who hasn’t had an opportunity to play. So we are going to potentially explore those things. Sometimes it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with what Justin has done or has not done.”

“At times, we have gotten open. At times, we haven’t,” Tomlin said of the team’s pass catchers. “That’s just a function of football. Say what you will about that.”

OT: Yet another cable/internet/phone thread

Just cut the cord finally. Only really saving $50 per month moving to YouTube TV from Comcast Xfinity.

Where comcast gets me is having to stay with them for internet which costs $120/month for the 800MBps speed. That’s just crazy expensive but don’t know if I can go to a lower tier.

I could opt to switch my mobile phone out from Verizon to Xfinity for $30 per month, which is a reduction from the $150 I am paying right now for two lines (phone and watch). Anyone ever go this route?

A hypothetical on the end of the game

Let's say Cal makes that 40-yard field goal. The ensuing kickoff would have been short enough to force a return, so let's say Pitt takes the ball at its own 20 with 1:45 on the clock and one timeout trailing 18-17.

Hypothetically, what chance would you give Pitt to come back and win? I know it was the worst offensive performance of the season and Eli Holstein looked off for most of the day. But I can't really shake the feeling that they would have gotten it done. They probably only need to drive 40-45 yards to get into range for Ben Sauls. And in that situation, maybe Holstein focuses on chipping away rather than trying for home runs. And we've seen a few game-winning drives already this season.

What do you think: do they get it done again in that scenario?
