The USA Problem

Imagine Gonzaga basketball only playing a weak conference schedule and not being able to step out of conference and push themselves against better teams to prepare them for The NCAA’s.

This is what we have with USA Soccer. Now that most of our team is playing in Europe at good clubs, the biggest thing holding us back is Concacaf.

SMF’s crazy idea of joining UEFA isn’t so bad.

We are rumored to be playing in Copa America in 2024. That is what we all want. That step out of Concacaf can help prepare our team against elite competition. But guess what? If a country wants to step out of their confederation and play in another tournament, club teams are not required to release players for international play if for example USA is a guest country in a foreign confederation tourney like Copa America , Africa League of Nations, or Euros.

No club is going to release players for such competitions. Why would they?? So we would be stuck sending MLS jabroni’s to Copa America and that’s not helping anyone.

So if we want to be more than a 2nd tier team in future world cups, we have to get out of Concacaf, or Concacaf is going to have to merge somehow with Comebol.

The Atheltic recommends that Purdue potentially reach out to...yes....Pat Narduzzi

https://theathletic.com/3981496/202...fortunas-cover-4-2?source=user-shared-article

he says "If Purdue decides to lean on defense, perhaps it would be worth reaching out to Pat Narduzzi, who just wrapped up his 8th season at Pitt and whose roots are in Big 10 country."

More college football before the Bowls

College football is one of the few sports that leave you wanting more when the season ends. It's like a movie with an ending that leaves you hanging. There never seems to be proper closure, even with the 4 team playoff. If you're left wanting more, we have I-AA Quarterfinals tonight and tomorrow. Army/Navy tomorrow at the Linc, in what should be a great game.

Fairly big spreads in all of the I-AA games. Feels weird not to see JMU, so go William & Mary.

Dior Wondering

I am seeing this with my sons basketball team. There are two point guards. One rarely turns it over keeps the ball moving, plays good D, and picks his spots. The other guard gets sped up easily looks to drive and create too much and the ball movement is lot less. Turnovers are very high.

I also see this as the difference between Nelly and Burton at point guards. I think Nelly has been playing great as a true point guard the last few games. Burton is like a Xavier Johnson score first instinct.

I hope if Dior comes back he only plays shooting guard and let Nelly run the teams until his wheels fall off.

Pitt box score +/- so far for the year, and some other stats

BPM:
Hinson +7.2(!)
Burton +4.7
Federiko +2.9
Elliott +2.9
G Diaz Graham +2.1
J Diaz Graham +1.1
Sibande +0.9
Hugely -0.5
Cummings -1
Santos -3.7
[Skipped the walk ons]

Total rebound percentage:

G Diaz Graham 16.6%
J Diaz Graham 15.0%
Hinson, Federiko, Santos 11.7%
Sibande 11.1%
Hugely 9.6%
Burton 8.7%
Elliott 8.5%
Cummings 4.3%

Some team statistics:
Pitt is shooting 52.6%/34.2%/72.8%.
Their opponents are shooting 47.1%/29.6%/64.4%.
But Pitt is losing the turnover battle 14.2 to 12.1. In fact Pitt is 285th in the country in getting steals, pretty dismal.

Admittedly these stats can be misleading because for instance the Diaz Graham brothers didn't play against some of the tougher competition. But it does show the Hugely problem clearly. And to an extent Cummings too, who is playing somewhat better I think but still turns it over without getting steals back.
